It is not the people he hates, is their religion.
I tend to believe the words of the man himself.
It is not the people he hates, is their religion.
Also, his homilies were not heard by the Jews. This was something for those 'inside the house to hear', not for the Jews.
It's like a parent who teaches his kids that homosexuals are demon possessed, but this teaching is supposed to stay in the house. It's more like a warning for his children, not hate speech against homosexuals.
His sermons were hate filled, there is no way around it, no way to defend his words. He believed the Church replaced the Jewish people. That is a false theology.
So you have read his Homilies against the Jews and don't think his words would have caused hatred of the Jewish people?
Yes, that's exactly what we believe. That we are the new Israel.
I believe his homilies reached their purpose, which was: to stop Christians keeping the Jewish Festivals and stay away from the Jews.
I consider hatred towards Jews what has been done during the Spanish Inquisition, by the Catholic Church: when Jews were forced to convert to Catholicism and burned alive.
I gave this example to emphasize that St. John Chrysostom let them alone. He barked, but he did not bite. And he didn't even barked at them!
That may be what you believe, but that's not what the Bible teaches.
I can believe what I want, I can believe the Jews are wrong and I am right (in my faith).
Jews can believe they are right and I am wrong. And we go separate ways.
Ok, so you wish to continue to argue the point. No, you cannot believe what you want, you do what the Word says.
Secondly, I didn't say the Jewish people were right, I said we didn't replace them, because that's what the Bible teaches. Romans 11, the Jews have been blinded for a time. Just because they are blinded doesn't mean we hate them or spread lies about them. You pray for them and have the same concern as anyone else who doesn't yet know the Lord.
Than let me rephrase: I understand the Word differently than you. Like it or not.
I believe we are now the New Israel and that whoever believes in Jesus Christ enters in the New Covenant. Jews don't believe in Jesus Christ. If Jews accept Jesus Christ as Messiah and as God, than they too can be part of Christ' body.

Then you understand it incorrectly, I hope you'll learn the fallacy of Replacement Theology, which is heresy. Both the Catholic and Protestant church apologized for this belief and recanted. Yet people today still fall for it. smh
No, read Romans 11, the Bible doesn't say we replace the Jews. As I said, they are blinded for a time.
St. John Chrysostom had no relation with the Jews, didn't even engaged with them, let alone harm them.
He took attitude against them in a certain context and that context was the following: his flock started to participate in Jewish festivals, keep the Sabbath; this tendency of Christians to want to imitate the Jews in their religiosity is nothing new under the sun. It started with the Galatians and continues until our days (they are called Judaizers).
He asks Christians to stop this nonsense (keeping Jewish festivals) and the relations with the Jews, and the way He does it is very radical, unpleasant and considered 'hateful speech' by postmodernists.
He believes fellowship with Jews could jeopardies the salvation of the Christians. Is a Christian man entitled to believe that? Is that hatred?
What could be wrong about celebrating the Jewish festivals? All of them are about Jesus and can teach us many things.
Jews don't believe their Jewish Festivals are about Jesus...
Irrelevant
I am a grown up and take responsibility for what I believe. You believe it's incorrect and I couldn't care less about your opinion.
Dear kayla, let's leave it here, al right? I already understood your position and I don't even try to change it. In fact, YOU came here to "not derail my thread", and end up high jacking it one comment after another.
I believe Christians are the New Israel (except for you, because you hold a different view) and nothing is going to change my view, not you, not your cherry-picked bible verses, not your accusations that the theology I hold onto is false, NOTHING. Do you understand?
What could be wrong about celebrating the Jewish festivals? All of them are about Jesus and can teach us many things.
Forcing people to celebrate them would be wrong but participating in them freely is a good thing.
Whatever that teacher believes,
Paul warned that arrogance toward the natural branches could cause the grafted branches (that's us) to be cut off.
We do not support the root. The root supports us.
You don't say! It's irrelevant to participate in Jewish Festivals knowing that, not only they don't celebrate Jesus Christ, but consider Him a deceiver?
Please!
It was far more than that. He had a hatred for the Jewish people. If you read his sermons it was clear. BTW Jesus celebrated the Jewish festivalsDo you think people realize that?
