It was hot day over 30 degrees centigrade, so I decided to pay a visit to the beach for a couple of hours. Whenever I am on my own driving, I use the time to pray or think.
Recently I had read an article about how the church in America was losing members at the rate of knots. The rearch showed that the church was decreasing in numbers in almost every demographic. The one that was hit the hardest was the millenials. The fact was they just were not interested in the church.
As I was thinking about these facts, I had what I can only call a revelation. What is the point of church worship that has morphed into a rock concert to attract millenials if it is not doing that?
Now I know that some of you may say well what about the mega churches that are attracting millenials? My answer is How many mega churches attracting millenials are there in each town? Not many and they usually only operate in large cities and town where a lot of millenials live. Where I live there are 45 churches plying their trade. Millenials are virtually none existent in these 45 churches. Some of them have a form of rock music service, but the millenials are mostly absent. T|hose that are there are usually attending because their parents do.
But it doesn't alter the fact that as a proportion of the millenial population, their numbers are small.
The megachurch that I went to for a year and had some very good points in its favour, was run by people who would qualify as my grandchildren. Its main demograhpic was people under 30. if they got rid of the rock music, would the people still come?
I shared this with my wife and she said it only goes to show that what the church needs is Holy Spirit power and the miraculous, just as it was in the New Testament Church, not rock music.
One final thought. In the Welsh revival of 1902, the main factor was Holy Spirit power. The revival put the pubs out of business because as was often the case, a man would be walking down to the pub for a drink and he would walk by a chapel meeting that was soaked in the Spirit and he would fall to his knees in the street under the convictioin of the Spirit and get saved.
Bring it on Lord.
