That would be a nonsensical concept indeed. The Bible does not say that the Prodigal Son plucked himself. He just got up and left. God will not let any force from the outside pluck us. Any child would understand this. Only a desperate Calvinist would try to float that lead balloon.
This is a Gospel of continued faithfulness to our Lord and Saviour who made Salvation available to all by way of the all-meaningful Cross. So simple. So clear.

your saved by your ability to stay in faith, not Gods ability to remain faithful.
What if it's a person's proclivity to reject it, that they need to be saved from?
You have to understand that, under the gospel of the kingdom, or the gospel of the circumcision, salvation and rewards go together. So yes, your first paragraph is correct.
What Jesus shared in the parables of the kingdom, such as those in the latter half of Matthew, all indicated that. The clearest of course is the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25:31-46, but there are also parable of the talents too.
So when John wrote 1 John, he is writing to the circumcised, as agreed in Galatians 2:9.
But under the gospel of the uncircumcision, or the gospel of the grace of God which Paul preach to us, salvation and rewards are delinked. Salvation is a free gift, but rewards must be earned. That is what Paul was trying to explain in 1 Cor 3
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
So long as one is able to rightly divide the word of truth, he will understand that rewards are based on building on the proper foundation, which is the foundation Paul laid for us in the Body of Christ.
We in the Body of Christ will also be able to read passages in 1 John 2:3-4, and understand them literally.

Peter thought that way once, but then he met up with a bunch of chickens that taught him otherwise. And then he tried out that water walking thing. God is always faithful, but our faith waivers at times.

Waver is different than going from faith to unbelief.
you stop believing because the one you trusted in is unfaithful and untrustworthy. Or you never really had faith to begin with
as the man told Jesus, I believe lord help me with my unbelief, that small faith still acted and Jesus rewarded. Faith of a mustard seed moves mountains. I may have doubts god will save me, that’s not the same as no longer believing in God or his salvation, making me an antichrist,

It is not the human mind or the body that was once dead, it is the Human Spirit. When that new birth took place, it became alive in Christ. It will strive to please HIM and the other brethren, out of AGAPE LOVE. And that AGAPE LOVE does not come from us, GOD HIMSELF PUT IT IN US.

Many of them refer to God's faithfulness towards us. The problem is with our faithfulness, not His. He will forgive the humble who do their best. But many Prodigal Sons will never return. Keeping our lamps trimmed and burning does not require a long list of good works, but we must never demand to go our own way and become bitter against God. I'm sure you have seen this happen.
