Luke 11

Is this prayer for today ?


1¶And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

2¶And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

3Give us day by day our daily bread.

4And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

I notice it says ' Our father ' ,which is corporate . Its to Jews of course . Its under the law . its before the cross . Its before Jesus died for the sins of the world. So they are praying for forgiveness of sins.

“Our Father” refers to Israel, as is seen by the passage in which the prayer occurs in Matthew (vss. 7–8, 6:32). Notice that “Our Father” is never given to a Gentile to pray, nor does Christ anywhere in the Sermon on the Mount even intimate that God is “Father” to anyone but an Israelite!

He is telling His listeners to call God “Our Father,” and thus He distinctly shows us that the “Our Father” is not the “Lord’s prayer” at all, since the Lord never prayed it, is not praying it now, and never will pray it. It is a “Disciples’ Prayer” given to Old Testament, Jewish disciples before the crucifixion, resurrection, and Church Age.

Why ' of course ' when none of the prayer applies to a gentile. None of it applies after the cross .

' cast doubt on bible truth ' . Luke 11 is true , I believe they asked Jesus a question and he answered them . If Jesus had said " teach this prayer to gentiles also and everyone after my resurrection. And if we saw it reappear after the resurrection, in one of the epistles ,then those that repeat it toady may have a point .

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

The disciples prayer is corporate. it is a Jewish prayer , before the cross . Before Jesus dealt with the sins of the world.

Just as a further note. if we think about the blessing it is to be able to say 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name' in fact just those two words 'Our Father' what a privilege.

Because we are sons/daughters we can say 'Our Father'. That in itself is a wonderful truth that we could dwell on for a lifetime.
