That Jesus answer is what he meant to say . This is not the response we should give today if asked how to receive eternal life . But it was the response under the law . Jesus ' good news ' to Jews at that time, under the law is not the same ' good news ' we should preach today . Jesus does not want us to preach the wrong good news at the wrong time , evidently.

Jesus meant what He said.
22¶Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
Yes the man needed to do this to inherit eternal life. So do you.

WE certainly would. And WE of those in my fellowship do so worldwide. We still teach the following.

The true grace of God teaches....

We consider total departure from the world and total devotion to Christ and following Him holding nothing back a requirement to true saving faith and salvation. A heart that says I sell out everything to possess Christ is the only people who are saved.
Maybe you are shocked by this statement from Jesus because you have been taught that you don't have to sell out everything to be saved. I know of no other salvation. Anything less that total surrender and devotion to Christ is false teaching and false security.

This is before the cross, to the Jewish diciples , before the resurrection and before the giving of the Holy Spirit And its before ( 10 years after Acts 2 ) the gentiles no longer need to become a prosylete in order to be included . Its before we have the Holy Spirit given to the gentiles ( Acts 10 ) And of course its before we have the Jew / gentile ' body ' . Its before we even have an apostle to the gentiles thats given the ' mysteries ' . And your talking about a ' new way ' before the new testament even begins, before the gospel ( DBR ) Even happens ???

As you asked. Did Jesus mean what he said? Yes. It may muddle up your theories but it stands by itself and must be dealt with. I believe that it is required today. It reveals true faith vs mental assent. The teachings that Jesus gave his disciples were to be repeated to all nations until the end. What Jesus taught does apply to all people who would come to Christ today.

You are presenting a hermeneutic that Jesus is telling the rich man to keep the commandments to inherit eternal life but you are ignoring the fact that Jesus said that he lacked that which was necessary beyond those commandments that were mentioned and therefore he was not telling him that keeping the commandments alone would grant eternal life but giving up everything to FOLLOW HIM would. This is still the way to eternal Life. Jesus the Way, the Truth and the Life and Giving him everything is the definition of TRUE SAVING FAITH.
This story being included to show us what real FAITH looks like was necessary because God knew that there would be people who would try and teach that mere mental assent was sufficient.

Both parables, the treasure and the pearl teach the same lesson. The Kingdom of heaven is obtained with this kind of Faith. You must be willing to give all for Christ or you're not going to be saved in the end. Those who endure to the end shall be saved.
It is very bad hermeneutics to not see the treasure or the pearl as the kingdom of heaven. If you think that the treasure or the pearl is the christian you fail to grasp that it is a parable about the kingdom of heaven not the christian.

Indeed, but a good one nevertheless. There was a purpose in this dialogue. I have conjectured that it is an additional example along with the pearl and treasure parable about what it means to enter into eternal life/Kingdom of heaven.
I stand by that interpretation and will continue to preach it. As a matter of fact I was just contemplating a sermon based on the truth found in this verse:
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.
I think the pearl, treasure parable and this story of this rich man are all part of that truth. What does it look like to go all the way into the Faith that saves?

Endure until the end of your life even if you are killed for your faith, you will not deny his name. I an not confused. I never have been. I am not sure why you hyperdispensationalist think that we are. I am sorry that you are. There is no reason to be. Maybe there is some hidden agenda in this doctrine that you are teaching. Do y'all teach that people can be porn addicts and still go to heaven? That is usually the kind of thing these cult teachings believe. Sort of like "Paul said all you have to do is believe, no repentance, not baptism in water" If you believe that Jesus existed like if you believe that George Washington was the first president of the USA then you are saved. Is that what you teach? Just believe in some facts that Jesus died, and rose again and you are saved. You can keep your porn addiction but you are still saved. Tell us the truth. Is that what you believe?
