Of course you were. Repenting of sins means leaving the life of sin behind. If you didn't repent, you're still dying in your sins.

Then we are are doomed. Have you stopped sinning? Repenting is not a physical action but a change of heart, mind.

just believe the gospel, yes -- which is the first thing Jesus responds with, 'no one is good but God alone'
but this seems to sail right over the man's head.

so if you reject the gospel, what hope do you have? the law. the man says he keeps it, and Christ tells him he still lacks something.
and gives him a command outside the law, requiring more works from him than the law requires.

Why didn’t the Lord just tell him to believe on the death, burial and resurrection for sins. That’s the gospel unto salvation. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s exactly how Paul would and did respond.

Acts 16
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

The point is what Jesus answer is . Of course that will be the truth regardless.

why is it said this lawyer was asking to "tempt" Jesus?

is it "tempt" or "test"?

That would be a tithing question. Jesus said what he lacked .

And what He told him to do was more than what the law requires. So is He teaching him to gain life and righteousness through the law? No. The text tells us He's not, but something greater than the law.

Or thats Christians reading into the text what is not said.

How do the apostles read it, once the light of Christ is revealed to them? They say all of the scripture is testifying of Him, all the prophets are bearing Him witness, and His life is showing His Salvation.

But you don't. Because for whatever reason, it's very important to you to paint a picture of Jesus not having the gospel.

What are the full implications of "only God is good"?

List them.
Christians are supposed to think.

I have to say that the people in this forum have so many different imaginative ways, not to understand the text literally, so as to justify their "There is only one gospel for all time" doctrine.

How did your buddy the apostle Paul interpret scripture?
In a Christless way or as though the entire word of God is testimony of Him?

Jesus had good news . We need to understand what , to whom and when?

Jesus was presenting to Israel the good news that the promised kingdom is now at hand. Their promised king in 2 Samuel 7 had finally arrived in the flesh.

To Jews in that nation, brought up with all the ot scripture, that is extremely good news, especially after Jerusalem was annexed by Rome and Pompey entered their holy of holies

But that good news was not 1 cor 15:1-4.

I've heard and read over the years many many theologians trying to explain these verses . And what the majority do is tell us what is ' implied 'or what the verses really , really mean if you squint your eye just right . I'm going to believe what Jesus really did say .

He really did say only God is good.

What are the implications of that?
God expects us to be wise, and to use our brains.

It's not just being rich, its the way you live your life when your rich, what you did to become rich and what you'd do to stay rich. Not to mention all the people you could help with your money that you don't.
Under the law it was love your neighbour as a requirement in keeping the law .
