The term "social distancing" appears to have been coined in 2006 in a NYT article regarding the avian flu pandemic. It is a politically correct term used to describe people who are standing at least six feet apart or people who are in quarantine.
The word social refers to how social organisms interact in society. In other words, this is about how people live in their community. Socializing is conceptual rather than material and is about morals, identity, behaviors, attitudes, values, culture, etc.
What social distancing aims to do is physically separate individuals, not socially separate them. So since words have meaning then what is the end goal of misnaming something as social distancing when the objective is to limit the spread of highly contagious viruses via physical distancing?
Could this have something to do with neurolinguistic reprogramming? Has there ever been a time that those who are sick were truly socially distanced by totally ostracizing them from society? If yes, then perhaps the term social distancing is a foreshadowing of sorts.
