I remember staying in hostels/student flats and they'd have coin operated laundry rooms nearby or on the ground floor.
But in nz where flats are actually seprate houses and not apartments each has their own laundry room, but, since only at most 6 people live in one house, they wouldn't come equipped with a machine. But doing laundry by hand is very time consuming. You would need an entire day and then some to do it.

They don't its just one brother moves around for work and then needs his own at whatever flat he's staying at, since most flats are unfurnished. Here, they only ever seem to come with stoves.

If he buys one he can't leave it at the rental so he has to put it somewhere. He had a fridge too but he sold it.

I had a fridge too but it conked out two weeks after we moved into our new home. It was a Whirlpool and apparently only 3 years old. We bought a GE.

Way back in the day some people did laundry in the local creek and banging it with rocks. Saved on Tide though.

I don't know how old you are Tourist but did you ever remember seeing anyone doing this?
Theres no way people would be doing their laundry in the creek near me. Though I do wonder WHY all the supermarket trolleys end up there.

It was common in the US before electricity and water delivery into the house. I am 66 years old and no, I don't remember ever seeing such a thing.

I dont take electricty and plumbing for granted, though. My electricty comes from the grid and the water from catchment area in the hills. Some people dont have this and rely on their own tank water....but when it runs out they have to buy water!

its great, but needs to be maintained and designed properly.
Here we have hydropower, but our stormwater, sewerage and drainage systems in the city are getting old and too much pressure is being put on rivers and dams with more people than infrastructure can cope with. we rely on the rain a lot but without tree cover the water would just wash away...

its very sad to see creeks polluted such that you cant even swim or fish in them, especially after a big rain. I wish more care would be taken now because and in 50 years time its going to be really bad. if any of us have children or grandchildren they are going to suffer from our lack of care for the environment, You cant just up sticks any time and move to somewhere better.

Nature can repair the damage humans do, but it seems humans want to sabotage it and not respect the water.

anyway! sorry I just was musing...a lot of people arent aware of how precious water is and think someone else is looking after it. Well no, We need to be the ones looking after it, cos we know that we cant live without it. I hate to see water sold as a commodity, and people bottling it in throw away bottles, we were like. we can drink it from the tap but in some countries you cant even do that.

Water is indeed a most precious resource that is really getting stretched to the limit.
 
hate paying for bottled water...some places dont have free drinking water.
I always carry my bottle or have one in the car, but had this friend whos always BUYING bottled water and then chucking away their bottles.

what a waste.

My wife prefers bottled water. I really don't care so I drink it out of the tap. My new fridge has a filtered water dispenser so I drink that water too. I agree that one of the problems with bottled water is the bottle itself. Lot or resources used to make the bottle and it ends up in a landfill or in the ocean and takes forever to breakdown. I have a plastic bottle that I always refill.

The problem with plastic is it does not break down... just apart.

63 billion gallons of oil are used every year just to supply the U.S. with
plastic water bottles, more than 90% of which are one-time use only.
The U.S. alone throws away 38 billion bottles every year, equaling 2 million
tonnes of plastic going into U.S. landfills, and that is only counting water
bottles, amounting to approximately 300 pounds of single-use plastic
disposed per person. 80% of the litter along the shorelines of the Great Lakes
is plastic. This level of plastic debris is found all around the world. The
Mediterranean Sea is one of the most polluted bodies of water on the planet,
where recent findings show a 1-to-2 ratio of plastic to plankton. That is not
counting other types of garbage such as metal, rubber, and netting etc.

Im waiting for a fine day when I can do mine, otherwise, laundry day may be tomorrow at the laundrymat for the smelly throws from school.

I read that some people dont even do laundry, when their clothes get dirty or smelly, they just throw them out and buy new ones. Im like what..?!
Its like people who dont do dishes and just live off takeaways. Then I think of all those disposable cups, plates and cutlery. Literally just chucked away and forgotten about. It ends up in the oceans, so you could be lying on the beach next to lots of dirty dishes and cups that have washed up.

However the oceans actually dont do the best job of doing the dishes, they dont come with detergent. They can rinse them but they dont scrub unless you actually take a sea sponge or brush.

It is sad that a lot of plastic garbage ends up in the oceans. I guess some people have more money than they know what to do with so their clothes are disposable.

I was reading in a magazine about this fashion guru, who is now 80 years old, lamenting that she was actually one of those horrid people who encourgaed everyone to follow fashion, and make cheaper clothes by moving manufacturing to cheaper labour sweatshops so that people would have to constantly need to update their wardrobes and consume and consume and then discard their clothes.
I dont know who got the idea for polyester...but thats a fabric when worn near your skin it makes you sweat like a pig.

she now thinks everyone should just buy good quality clothes to keep, rather than give them to op shops...but you cant possibly keep everything and besides you might outgrow something. I dont have any qualms about giving good clean clothes to an op shop or buying clothes from op shops. I rememeber the other extrmeme too when clothes were super expensive that we had to sew our own. And there were actually fabric shops.
 
The clothes that I wear I have had for years and could not care less about the latest fashion. My fabrics of choice are denim and cotton. My wife discards my old clothes when she feels that are looking shabby and with the occasional hole. People that follow the latest fashion trends have their priorities wrong and obviously too much time on their hands.
 
well women tend to follow fashions in order to attract men to them..this still happens.
If you wearing the same dress as everyone else somehow that is wrong, but apparently a wedding dress MUST be white AND super expensive. You cant just marry in a bathrobe, or boiler suit and it can only be worn once.


The weird things about fashion is, there is so much choice, but lots of people just end up wearing rags and deliberately rip holes in their jeans. Some people dont bother with constantly changing their clothing and like wearing tatttoos instead.
 
What bothers me is when the washing machine stops working at the laundry mat and you're on a tight schedule.
 
I did a wash last week at the laundrymat but took it home to dry on the line as didnt have time, and I knew it was going to be sunny. Because its the middle of winter here the washing takes longer to do some weeks it just piles up.

I like summer because its easier to do washing. I am not a person who uses the dryer much. Its very noisy and consumes so much electricity. While we have one, it hardly gets used.

I do wonder why youd even buy one if youve got space to have a washing line and able to air dry your clothes for free. I could think of better things to spend money on and more space in the laundry room for food.
