Is it a sin to drink alcohol

Not trying to pick on you in particular brother, just answering in general. People here are saying moderation is the key. Here's my point, nothing loosens the tongue more than alcohol. How many people use the excuse "I was drunk." It takes very little alcohol to be buzzed, which even the cops will tell you is drunk driving. Someone early in the thread mentioned the Salvation Army not allowing alcohol and seemed to make fun of it. Do you know why they are against alcohol?! I do! I ministered in a Sal. Army on Younge Street in Toronto, Canada. The officer/pastor said to us there would be prostitutes, pimps, people who were addicted possibly high or drunk. They were all wonderful people and many came to the front for salvation that night. We had a meal together after the service. What testimony would it be to have alcohol there? Well, of course you'd say I wouldn't have alcohol if it caused someone to stumble. My question is, how do you know someone with you isn't an alcoholic? My uncle was a lifelong alcoholic, he never turned loose of it. I have never seen a good argument for drinking alcohol. Everyone of us lives by a list of do's and don'ts. If you are one of the few who can drink without getting buzzed, great. But I see no reason or need for alcohol with all the lives its destroyed. JMO

Looks like you are referring to the majority who hold to an outward form of godliness and never reach what He would have us walk in.
I shared Jesus teaching, I didn't share an "opinion".
It is always my hope that I am speaking with Spirit filled Christians as I post here.
Thank you for your work at the Salvation Army for those who have given over to this particular sin that they may be redeemed.
I am pretty sure your uncle is free of that temptation now, on the other side of the veil the devil has no more power to tempt.
Is any sin more grievous than any other? Doesn't look like that is true, they can all separate us from His perfect plan for each of us.

Drinking and drunkenness.



That line is almost non-existent for some in consistent use.


For certain occasions or with meals if one has discipline it is not unreasonable.


If you feel guilty the next day or it leads you to more sinful behaviors that would not have occurred had you not consumed alcohol...that's a good clue that you shouldn't be drinking the way that you are or perhaps not at all. If you can't take a break from alcohol then it very well may be that your flesh has some sort of mastery over you in that area which is cause for great concern as it is unscriptural.

I have felt exceptionally dishonorable the way I had been drinking.

Oh and btw, recall that there is a verse in revelation about drunkards. That probably isn't an alcoholic that struggles with their flesh...it is most likely willful.

Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler certainly bears resonance with me...as well, the verse about it not being alright for kings to drink wine, I think there is wisdom in that verse but I'd have to further explain how I personalize it.

I'm not 100% opposed btw...it's just overall about a 6/10 with a nice experience. Not worth playing roulette with a 0/10 on the same wheel.

Younge & Dundas Square Toronto. Brings back memories! My cousins are Torontonians and I've gone to the University of Toronto for a little while before ending up at McGill University full-time more than two decades ago.

As for drinking alcohol, there is always a reason to enjoy. God forgives you if you error and live a little, thanks to his mercy and grace. Just drink alcohol socially and enjoy a good time with others! Otherwise, you're missing out!

Toronto has a decent Jazz scene. The Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar is an excellent spot to hit if you ever make it to Toronto in the future.

I forgot to mention, my friend Colin married his wife in Chicago back in the day because alcohol loosened their tongues. Definitely good use of alcohol among many.

That was a good answer. Most of us would had said NO. A small but noisy few would have picked Homosexuality. I would have picked leading or causing children to sin.

When we repent, and truly turn from it, he is faithful to forgive and cleanse.
Not being drunk is only a part, we are required to be filled with Holy Spirit as well.

Can you explain this a little better? It comes across as encouraging people to drink.

Did you mean: "if you are going to drink alcohol and you are not drinking socially then you are missing out." Is that what you meant?

We certainly have liberty in Christ but once again there is a "line" between liberty and licentiousness. Grace "can" apply to licentiousness but usually not without some scourging/correction...Which in these types of situations ends up being physical or legal typically.

You'd be amazed how fast you can experience the deleterious (bad) effects of alcohol. A few years is pretty fast.
Whereas some people think they'd have to be 20 years into it...or that only happens to older people. It happens to young people too...they just rarely talk about it. Though again, if you "can" enjoy responsibly and your heart is right before the Lord in it just be mindful of guidelines. Tons of stuff I didn't know about drinking responsibly from a medical standpoint until MUCH later.

but yeah, just be mindful of good drinking S.O.P (tolerance, hydration, self-control, build-up, company, driving, laws, etc. etc.)


Alcohol is in a similar category to gambling for me. Risky not because of all the times you can handle it...but it's about the times you can't or are caught up or misled because you have stepped outside a boundary of protection. I'm not trying to be doom and gloom or anything man. I've definitely imbibed but it cost me something eventually so this is simply a caution.

Repentance is daily, hourly, part of the ongoing walk.
Romans 10- 9&10 is salvation.

Alcohol is an equal opportunity destroyer. It's also psycho active and addictive. While I'm not a crusader for
prohibition I don't think the majority of people understand why it does what it does seemingly randomly and differently to some individuals. It most definitely is a dangerous drug. The innocent suffer as well as the people that get drunk.

Drinking alcohol is not a sin. Being an alcoholic is not a sin. Many alcoholics can learn to stay sober.
Getting drunk, staying drunk and being a drunkard are definitely sins. Even being a 'recreational' drunk is a sin.
