Are any stories in the Old testament to be taken completely literally or do they all have some moral meaning which you have to work out ?
 
Yes they are literal, except I have heard some pastors say that the beginnings of genesis where God created the world in 7 days and the garden of eden stuff is supposed to be figurative, but other pastors take it literal.

Depends on what is going on. More importantly though, context and the style of writing.
