[Apologies if this is mentioned in another post - I couldn't find it, if it is]

Sinning against the holy spirit is mentioned in the Synoptic gospels

"And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven."
Luke 12:10 KJ

"But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation"
Mark 3:29 KJ

"Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come."
Matthew 12:31-32 KJ

Its an unforgiveable sin; over the years I've heard very different interpretations of this. Given the high stakes as its on unforgiveable sin I'm surprised I haven't heard more reference to these passages in sermons.

I'm curious what do you believe is sinning against the holy spirit? and could you give an example?

thank you

there are some very important things to remember about this egregious sin.

  1. Jesus is the only one in scripture who used the term
  2. Jesus said this after those Pharisees said Jesus cast out the devil by the power of the devil.
  3. the context of the sin is attributing the work of the Holy Spirit with the devil or a devil.
In the chapters where Jesus spoke on this, nowhere did HE say " You Have blasphemed the Holy Spirit". Jesus, it appears was admonishing the Pharisees who looked to discredit what Jesus just did and ignorant of the working of the Holy Spirit.

Note: Notice Jesus did not have an issue with calling the Pharisees Hypocrites in Matthew 23 Repeatedly.

Yet here Jesus did not say you have blasphemy the Holy Spirit but spoke to what it is. Speaking ill-manner of the Holy Spirit.
many have used this sin to control and bring condemnation on others who suffer from doing what they think has been the Unforgivable sin. This is a terrible thing. Those who have done such things will answer to the living God.

How can one know they have NOT blasphemed the Holy Spirit>?

  1. You would not have any guilt or feeling of sorrow because you thought you have done so.
  2. You would have fully known what you were doing, this is a sin of knowledge can't be done in ignorance
  3. IF you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. and said things unwearyingly
  4. IF your pastor told you "Leaving this Church" would be the unforgivable sin
  5. if you practice the occult or devil worship Before salvation
  6. That you were a former homosexual

Where the word of God is silent on a topic we are to remain silent.

Jesus responded to the Pharisees in context to what they said. it is reasonable to see that Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a sin of knowledge done directly to the very work of the Holy Spirit as being of the devil. Others have said refusing to get saved is an unforgivable sin. I think that is an opinion because Jesus did not speak as not doing so was Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit and In John chapter 3:18 Jesus said :
"Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son."

Not sure what you mean ? Are all sins paid for at the cross ?
Yes. But that is not a blank check to do what you like. It is a JUDICIAL requirement for a Holy God to forgive if He wants to.
Will Hitler avoid the Lake of Fire because ALL sins are atoned for?
  • Did our Lord's death save Ananias and Saphira from temporal chastisement?
  • Does our Lord's death save the suffering of a loss in 1st Corinthians 3?
  • Does our Lord's death save the incestuous brother's life of 1st Corinthians 5?
  • Does our Lord's death save those who took the Lord's Table unworthily in 1st Corinthians 11?
  • Does our Lord's death save Alexander the Coppersmith?
In this age comes chastisement. In the next age it is loss of the Kingdom. In the following age either the chastisement has worked or it is the Lake of Fire.

The mechanism of forgiveness is you admit your sin and God puts it away because ANOTHER paid. But He has made an exception - a sin against the Holy Spirit. That, He says, I will NOT forgive for the rest of this age, and the Millennial Age. At the judgment of the "Throne of His glory" in Matthew 25, are some to Enter Life for a glass of water, and some to go to the Lake of Fire for the same glass of water? God applies His criteria as He likes. Our Lord has paid for all, but God applies it as He likes (Rom.9:15-20).

This verse is also distorted to guilt trip believers into fear and bondage . Many Christians believing they have perhaps committed this sin and or are constantly in fear of doing so. Their is nothing to fear as a believer in Christ . You cannot commit this sin today.
It does apply today, I see in these forums every day the blasphemy of well-meaning blasphemers who think they are speaking truth to correct what they themselves do not understand. Everyone needs to remember that "a little leaven spoils the whole"....no such thing as a 'lttle blasphemy being acceptable".

It was a national sin, not an individual sin. It is not a sin that any person could commit today. The Bible makes it very clear that every sin is forgivable to the individual who will come to God through Messiah’s blood; the nature of the sin is irrelevant. When Jesus died on the cross, He did not die just for some kind of sins and not for others; He died for every type of sin.
Although this was a national sin and not an individual sin, this is not a sin that some other nation could commit — Jesus was never physically present with any other nation offering Himself as that nation’s Messiah.

Blaspheming.. this was done by those rejecting who Jesus is completely by attributing what He does to the devil. Its rejecting salvation to begin with.

It's not something a saved person does.

Paul, Peter, myself and even Jesus was accused of many things. What is decisive is the exact wording of scripture. If the Holy Spirit records that there is a certain untruth leveled at Him that will not be forgiven in this age, nor the next, it is so. Be it known to all that the bulk of humanity will have many of their sins overlooked - based on Christ's propitiation. This starts with Adam and ends at the White Throne. But be it equally known by all that those who challenge God, those who shake their fist at Him, those who think that in their puny 70 or so years that they can sit in judgment of the eternal and ALL-Mighty, are in a for a terrible shock - for THEIR (personal) worm will not die, nor will THEIR (personal) fire be quenched (Isa.66:24, MK.9:43-48).

Our Lord Jesus paid for ALL sins FIRSTLY for the Father, and only SECONDLY for you and I. The all-inclusie death of our Lord Jesus FIRSTLY allows God to apply mercy IF HE SO WISHES. Only on the secondary level do we have the JUDICIAL basis TO CRY FOR MERCY! This is no better illustrated in Matthew 18. If a brother offends and it is established by witnesses, and he refuses to admit the offense - HE IS NOT FORGIVEN.

Mathew 18 would that be under the law still ?

I believe that the reason people will be in hell is not to pay for the sins Jesus has already paid for . Hell was created for the devil and fallen angels. People end up there because they refuse to believe the truth so as to BE saved. The Atonement is not limited Glorification is limited .Your using a unclear verse about the nation of Israel in a specific context to interpret the clear on how we are saved and how salvation works .

The problem with your point is Jesus did n to say it can't be done today. The Holy Spirit has not died or stopped. He is eternal and can be offended, grieved, and yes blasphemed.

Luke 16:16; "The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it."

The whole Chapter 18 of Matthew concerns the KINGDOM - not Law.

Grace is not given to those who deserve it it is already provided one must accept by faith freely.

I believe a sinner needs to access the grace through faith.
Rom 5 .1¶Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Read Matthew 12:22-32. Jesus very clearly said the Holy Spirit, and what was said against Jesu was not unforgivable. Remember Jesus is the one who Prayed Father forgive them for they know not what they do.

May I have your verses for this?

My scripture was surely written by an Israeli prophet, but is the repetition my Jesus Himself not enough to validate it? There is nothing unclear about Mark 9:47. It refers - not to Israel - but to the coming Millennial Kingdom.

We are saved by grace through faith, not of works but a gift from God. The Pharisees were not Spirit-filled they were not of an enlightened mind by the Spirit. Jesus knows this. That is why HE addressed this comment they made. They did not understand what they were saying because they wanted to discredit Jesus because they heard the People call him Son of David.

A verse that Jesus died for the sin of the world ? And reconciled the world . Not imputing their trespasses against them ? 2 cor 5.19
