if I lived near a forest I would be foraging for mushrooms, I particularly like wood ear mushrooms.
unfortunately in nz the forest has really been pushed back a lot but also theres not much that is actually edible in them. Last year I was learning rongoa (maori herbal medicine) but the amount of edible native fruits is very very small. One plant, the karaka, is poisonous if you dont prepare it properly.
I can imagine when the europeans came, the maori were so glad to see them because they brought with them potatoes. and peaches and apples and edible plants that could grow in our temperate climate.
