Hey just a quick question about is listening to metal in particular a thing i should be giving up after being saved?
Just for reference ill link a few of the songs i most particularly like, although god is my number one preference and dont take these things to heart is it still a sin?

I was a huge fan of Amon Amarth when I was not saved and was into Extreme Metal. Most of their lyrics consist of Norse mythology, Vikings, and mostly
pre-Christian mythology. I think they even follow those mythologies in their personal lives and write lyrics about different Gods and Goddesses of those era.
They even have a track off the album "The Avenger" called "God, His Son and Holy Whore". After going through all their lyrics, bio, and info, I don't really find them Christian from any side or any of their content to be glorifying God in any way.

I still listen to metal. I think metal gets a bad rap (no pun intended lol). Most metal lyrics that I listen too are not angry or demonic or about drugs or sex like a lot of people think it is. They're about life and love and well, "living it up", but I don't make living it up my goal. I just lke the songs.
 
Well that was my main concern, alot of the lyrics in metal have double meanings, on the surface may be very harsh but conceal a deeper message, was just seeking clarification on it.

Lol the minute they started blaming things on the illuminati i rolled my eyes and laughed. Some people are just insane.
 
There is no specific biblical mandate on metal. Period. Music falls into the area, biblically, 'between you & God & no one else'. If you feel guilty or questionable about listening to something, my advice, just stay away. If your conscience is clear, enjoy it. Just keep in prayer & be truly honest in trying to hear if God is speaking to you about anything. Do that & you should be fine. For me Tool & Chili Peppers are 2 bands i could not handle. I do have some Amon Armath. Not too up on the rest of them as far as message goes. Well, no i have Alestorm, don't listen to it often, though. Not big on secular music most of the time, just occasionally. Have you tried listening to some Christian metal bands? If you don't know of any & would be interested send me a message from my profile & i can get you going. But remember music is just sound, there is no such thing as any one style of music being 'evil'. Many popular hymns were originally bar songs. There were some well known classical composers who were Satanists, one in particular (forget who at the moment) publically dedicated his music to satan. So really, whats more Christian, bar songs converted to hymns, or original music made by Christians?
 
Yeh i mean ive seen a so called christian band live, as i lay dying. But still its just not the same as amon amarth and the others :\ Is this a bad thing?
 
There was a discussion some time ago in Christian Teen Room right here on CC that covered this topic. :o
The conclusion was:
1) Metal followers don't see anything wrong with it, and scream at you in defense of it (sorry guys :P ). So each to their own.
2) Lyrics are generally bad.
3) Even if the lyrics are not bad (which is most generally the case), it takes on an appearance of evil. As a given example, if you were trying to even do metal christian music, would you walk up to an unsaved person and scream at them? .... "JESSSUSSS LOVES YOUUUUUU!!! - *spittle spittle* *EAT THE MIKEEEE*"... If anything the person would look at you like an insane person without the peace of God and the worst case scenario you turn him away from the Christian faith - the world looks about the same if not better than the faith you just described to him.

There are certainly various forms of music which can be adapted to the Christian faith. True Hardcore metal is just seemingly not one of them.
There are several others here on CC who are willing to go over scriptures with you on why we came to this conclusion, but we're tired of "smacking our head against the wall" and always having to debate without anyone listening. Choice is up to you. Read the Bible, prayerfully consider it. :)

I think they're awesome as well but what I was talking about is that many of Tool's songs have anti-religion themes and you have a religion.

But I understand that even if they have different views they still have good music. I, myself, am not particularly fond of their new age philosophy.
 
I dont think that it is the style of music that is the problem, but rather the content. The fact that you have first asked the question says that your conscience is telling you something. The bible does talk about what we fill our time with, also that our bodies are his temple so we therefore need to watch what we do to eat and fill it with.
My mum once told me a story of her friend who was desparately worried about the type of music her teenage son was listening to (the friend was a pastors wife) He would listed to metal all the time - all though it was Christian lyrics she failed to see how this could possibly be good for him, particulary when you cant even work out what they are singing half the time. Once particular time he had it blasting from his bedroom, she went in there to tell him off and found him on his knees with his arms stretched to heaven with tears rolling down his cheeks as he cried out to God. From that day she never question the type of music just the content.
My son is 16 and in a Christian 'Sceamo' band, I can never understand what they are screaming, but when I asked him what is said he always knows. God wants us to reach the lost, if that is someone who relates to that style music and a christian version ministers to their heart - then fantastic.
There are heaps of Christian metal bands and similar genres.
Just remember that the enemy is subtle and lyrics can get into your subconscience and effect you without you realising. Be careful what you put in - 'garbage in - garbage out'
 
Oh one more things I forgot to mention, God calls us to take up our cross and follow him, hand in hand with this comes sacrifice. He gave it all, what are you willing to give up for him. Why not pray about it, be prepared to not listen to it for a period of time, not like a couple of days but weeks. During that time, when you normally would be listening to the music, get into his words, download podcasts to listen to if you are out and about. By being willing to sacrafice, you may just find that God takes away the drawing that you feel to those bands, and above that he will bless you for your faithfullness and heart!!
 
Problem with that is, music is basically the essence of everything that i do wether it be listening, selling, playing and even i myself dont write so called "christian" lyrics. In no way are they anti religious or anti christ, they usually just dont pertain to faith at all. Along with this what about bands like amon amarth which draw all inspiration from paganistic asatru origins?
 
It is silly how supposed Christians justify things like this. I am ashamed at you all.
