Those that state faith is never alone...are referring to works proving one's faith.
i don't know anything about the ubiquitous "those" i read so much about in all these threads, but i can tell you for myself what i am referring to :)

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you
(John 14:18)

it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose
(Philippians 2:13)

What is ubiquitous are the tenets of Calvinism.

Does you salvation message include a 'but '. For Example : ' But you have to repent of your sins "
That requirement for repentance is not a "but". It is an "and".

And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 20:21)

So you already got off on the wrong foot. No ifs, ands, or buts.

But would you say we don't repent of our sins to be saved ?
What does Scripture say in Acts 2:38?

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The gift of the Holy Spirit, the gift of eternal life, and the gift of salvation (justification) are all given at the same time.

Yeah, if I say I will give you this free gift... IF you mow my lawns and do my washing, It's not a free gift. You'd have to do something to get it

So with being given eternal life, it is a free gift, as Ephesians 2 says. When it is given, there is nothing the receiver does to keep it. Its given and owned by Jesus. Not maintained by the receiver.

Because of this huge grace then, the receiver has a new nature and is then motivated and empowered by the giver.

They could go back to old ways.. and most believers at some times do.. but they are motivated and empowered by Jesus to return to His ways.
In your example, you put IF in capital letters. You also put an IF in your estimation of the free gift of eternal deliverance, by saying, "if you believe, if you accept Jesus, if you repent, if you confess, if you don't reject it. etc. Your theory of the free gift of salvation depends upon your will, and not upon God's will. and in actuality, the natural man, before he has been quickened, will not do any of these if's because they are all spiritually discerned.

To "whom" did "he keep back nothing that was profitable unto "whom"? Verse 17 says it was to "the elders of the church at Ephesus"

The natural man will not repent of breaking a spiritual law, that he does not understand, and thinks them to be foolishness.

Salvation is by grace through Faith ( Hence the name i chose )
8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
No what some do is add ' but '

Does you salvation message include a 'but '
For Example : ' But you have to repent of your sins "

But that faith is never alone ( calvinists)

"But you can't just live how you want and still expect ....."

"But .....

Why are some adding to :
.8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: ?

Can it be that it really is good news ?
Or they quote other scriptures. Here are a couple of examples

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Luke 24

46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

These men in Acts that said to Peter, "what must we do", had already had their hearts changed from the stony heart to a heart of flesh, by regeneration, that can have its conscience "pricked". This is in contrast to the men that heard Steven preach the same sermon, and were "cut to the heart" and stoned Stephen to death.

Jesus said to Saul, on the road to Damascus, it is hard for the to kick against the pricks.

That is his current position. All are already lost and condemned. They must be redeemed by grace to change their estate.

God draws all to Himself. God convicts all of sin. God shows for the righteousness of Christ. Man chooses to receive or reject the grace of God. Every person without exception makes the choice.

For the cause of Christ
Roger
There is no "spiritual choice" made from the natural man, who was spiritually dead at the time of his quickening, Eph 2:1.

I agree . The Holy Spirit reproves the world ,not because of their sins . But the one sin of not Believing in Jesus

The error you making is your going to the book of Acts as required for today's normative requirement. We do not go to the book of Acts with its 29 conversion accounts . Why did you land on that particular one in Acts ? There's quite a few to choose from . What about Acts 8 with the Ethopian ? Acts 16.30 ? . Spin the wheel ,see where it lands and bingo there s your denomination. Acts 2.38 is on the day of pentacost and its following on From John the baptist message ...to JEWS . they are required to do what Peter instructs . They ask what must we DO . Notice the difference in Acts 16.30 .

Calvinists do not teach faith is alone. That teach by the faith of Christ, as a labor of his love his will is never alone. (dead faith) no works . Makes sense seeing it is not of us in any way shape or form .

Faith Christ's working in us is a work .It works in us to both will and empower us to believe according to his good pleasure alone. In that way he is of one mind and always does whatsoever his soul desires . He alone can make our hearts soft as we rest in His love.

No man can perform the work of repenting unless he is working in them to both will and do His good pleasure. He does the turning. We are not saved by any work we could do

That was my point . Calvinism adds a 'but 'to Faith alone with , BUT that faith is never alone . Its subtle ,but it amounts to the same in the end .

Do you mean 'change your mind ' ( repent) or 'penance ',feeling sorry , turn from sins , stop sinning ect ? as different groups don't mean the same on 'repent '.
