Several ways. I can sense when I am being lied to. I can feel when someone is not legit in their spirit. I know when someone uses Scripture and rearranges a word or 2 for their purpose (it feels like it doesn't align with the truth)(it will suddenly become a question in the back of my mind until I can get a Bible and see for myself what they have done). I mostly get a check in my Spirit (1 is of caution)(the other is an agreement with what is being said).
It really is like looking at a picture of 500 things going on differently within that picture, but for some reason, I will think even though nothing matches, nothing is repeating, nothing is similar, something just aint right here. And when I methodically go through what everything is happening within that picture. Sure enough, I will find the one thing that somehow should have not been there.
It's like knowing illogic is taking place until you can compare it with logic and see it for what it was.

Would it also be true to say that you have never wanted to speak in tongues nor have you ever seen any benefit in your doing so?
My view of that opinion is that you probably do not believe that what you read about in the book of Acts concerning believers speaking in tongues is available for the believer today.
I doubt that you would be saying that if it is available for every believer today that you would say to God, "I will pass. I do not want you to give me this gift of the Holy Spirit if you wanted to do so." I doubt that you are saying that. Therefore you probably do not want the gift of tongues because you do not believe it is still valid today.
Many people think it is no longer available. You do not have to believe it is still available to be saved.
Interpretation of scriptures will cause one person to ask for and receive this gift and another to not ask for and not receive this gift. We have to bear with one another and understand that each person has to be fully persuaded in their own minds.

Something else. The other day, I saw someone who was asking for money. I drove past but suddenly felt like I need to give this person something. So I turn the car into a parking lot and I tell God, OK, I will give. We are talking 5 minutes max. I was impressed to give a $20 dollar bill. So I whipped the car back and headed to where this person was. As I got there, another person, walking, stopped beside this guy and they began chatting. I drove slowly till I was by this person side, rolled my window down, and the first person came and leaned into my car. I said, God loves you, Brother as I handed him the bill. He looked at it and said, wow, really this much (I did not think it was much to get this reaction). Immediately he thanks me and tells me he can do this with this and is grateful.
But the entire time I am watching this 2nd person and they were turned aside but looking at me with head down and eyes looking my direction. I said to that person, I will see you in Heaven one day, won't I? That person quietly looked at me with a slightest turn toward me and said, we shall definitely meet again.
I drove away knowing that was an Angel of God!
And the Holy Spirit confirmed it.
In the area I live in, I know I have met 2 like him. One even asked if he could pray with me after I gave him what God told me to.
I really think there are many Angels within the homeless communities. And I feel like they spot me like I have a spotlight on me before I obviously figure out what they are.

I believe if you analyze the meaning of the gift of discerning of spirits you find that it means demons not the human spirit or the motives of a man whether he is being a manipulator or sincere is simply having discernment. That is not the same thing.
An example of this Holy Spirit gift in the book of Acts might be where Paul cast the demon out of the woman who kept following them and shouting "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." Sounds great but Paul cast the spirit (evil spirit) out of her because he knew what it really was.
An example in your church might be someone controlled by an evil spirit trying to take control of a service and prophesy and draw attention to themselves or Michael the Archangel or some kind of weird message that will cause confusion and you know that it is a demon spirit and you take control and put a stop to it. This is a much needed gift used to keep things in decency and in order in a biblical charismatic church.

If may jump in here I believe the gift of discerning spirits is also meant for all kinds of spirits. When I became saved I could tell when there was a demon around but I also noticed I could read people both on forums and in real life I could never do that before.
You can read a persons heart and detect their intent and what they are like sometimes with this gift, I mean I am not an expert on that gift in particular but if one can suddenly read people to that degree when they are saved then what is that?

Human beings are moved by a dense complex of motives, both in the things we do from day to day and in our big decisions. What drives a young woman to become a doctor or a young man to be an engineer? Many things contribute: success, altruism, interest. Or what drives a woman who has smoked for years to quit or an obese man to get thin? Again, many things contribute: fear of death, desire for health, concern of family. But they all interact in a kind of movement that eventually drives the person to act. Learn to think about those dense complexes of motives—images, ideas, attractions, revulsions—as “spirits.”

I think because of Science has given many labels like depression, fear, skitzo, etc... we have forgotton that behind those emotions are intent by the enemy. Which is no doubt demonic forces. I know even when I see Psychological Disorder, even though to science it is a form of mental illness, to me, it is also a form of demon oppression and many times subtle possession!

If men destroy the foundation of the doctrine of God then making a noise without understanding and falling back a sign of the spirit of judgment becomes the new law . The foundation helps us to recognize who needs the warning to stop mocking God .

Reading people is discernment.
Recognizing false motives by what people say is discernment.
Everyone has this ability and the more you learn and the more you learn about people and communication the better you become at this.
Be slow to judge or conclude the matter. You may think you know, and find out you were wrong. Go through that enough times and you will be slower about your "special gift"
Discerning of spirits if understood is not as popular as your "ability to read people" gift which even those who do not believe in speaking in tongues think they have the gift of discerning of peoples spirits and motives. Wonder why that is?

I agree completely. I struggle with severe depression and suicidal thoughts constantly but I never act them however lately things have gotten so bad I was terrified because I was so close to actually going through with it I had to pray with all my might for God to help and he did.
I seem to be getting into more severe warfare with the enemy lately and also more deep spiritual closeness with God so idk but I do know the enemy seems to be upping his game on believers

I never claimed it was special or anything I just was saying that I think this gift is not as black and white as it appears. Have ever heard the phrase I like your spirit when one shows enthusiasm or determination or something like that? The spirit of a person or the kind of vibe they give off can be seen as the kind of person they are. I was at walmart one time getting my medication and an old man covered entirely with leather skin and scars as if his body had been completely burned at some point in his life came up next to me and starting talking to a lady
This man was the only person I have ever met who gave off such life, just being near him I could feel and sense the life and joy he excluded. This is not something that you feel or sense with any normal discernment.
