Over 500 Doctors Sign Letter Telling POTUS: 'Shutdown Was a Mass Casualty Event'

Remember the scorn and derision heaped on anyone who said that the deaths caused by the shutdown might be just as problematic as the deaths caused by COVID-19? We’re not laughing anymore — not with real unemployment likely at roughly 20 percent and estimates of deaths of despair creeping higher with each number we see.

And, if you’re one of those people who wants to listen to the experts, listen to these 500-plus doctors who signed a letter to President Donald Trump calling the shutdown what it is: “a mass casualty incident.”

The letter was written by Dr. Simone Gold, an emergency medicine specialist in Los Angeles. “We are frustrated,” Gold said in an interview with Fox News Thursday, telling “America’s Newsroom” that “there are thousands and thousands of stories of patient harm” from the lockdown. In the letter, Gold compared the situation to triage.

“During a mass casualty incident, victims are immediately triaged to black, red, yellow, or green. The first group, triage level black, includes those who require too many resources to save during a mass crisis,” she wrote in the Tuesday letter. “The red group has severe injuries that are survivable with treatment, the yellow group has serious injuries that are not immediately life threatening, and the green group has minor injuries.” The red group, she wrote, is the one that gets the most attention.

Do you think the coronavirus lockdowns will end up costing more lives than they save? “Millions of Americans are already at triage level red. These include 150,000 Americans per month who would have had a new cancer detected through routine screening that hasn’t happened, millions who have missed routine dental care to fix problems strongly linked to heart disease/death, and preventable cases of stroke, heart attack, and child abuse. Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%,” she wrote.

“Tens of millions are at triage level yellow. Liquor sales have increased 300-600%, cigarette sales have increased, rent has gone unpaid, family relationships have become frayed, and millions of well-child check-ups have been missed. “Hundreds of millions are at triage level green. These are people who currently are solvent, but at risk should economic conditions worsen. Poverty and financial uncertainty is closely linked to poor health.” This isn’t just abstract theorizing, Gold wrote. Instead, she provided examples that she or her colleagues have seen....

“We are alarmed at what appears to be the lack of consideration for the future health of our patients. The downstream health effects of deteriorating a level are being massively under-estimated and under-reported. This is an order of magnitude error. It is impossible to overstate the short, medium, and long-term harm to people’s health with a continued shutdown.”

“Losing a job is one of life’s most stressful events, and the effect on a person’s health is not lessened because it also has happened to 30 million other people. Keeping schools and universities closed is incalculably detrimental for children, teenagers, and young adults for decades to come. The millions of casualties of a continued shutdown will be hiding in plain sight, but they will be called alcoholism, homelessness, suicide, heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. In youths it will be called financial instability, unemployment, despair, drug addiction, unplanned pregnancies, poverty, and abuse,” Gold wrote.

In her interview with Fox News, Gold said the evidence of the crisis is undeniable. “I could read you heartbreaking story after heartbreaking story sent to me by physicians of patients that have died or suffered severe harm because they were afraid to go to the hospital and their own doctor’s offices were shut,” she said.

Social media users have made the same point. One used a picture of Los Angeles County beaches, which were closed by the pandemic but reopened for the Memorial Day weekend, to illustrate the problem...

Another physician told California Public Radio that delays of regular care could mean a “massive wave” of cancer patients coming down the highway. “The last couple months have been historically low as far as volume, as far as screening, as far as cancer surgeries, basically because patients are concerned and very anxious to be going to a clinic environment, a hospital environment, because of their concerns regarding COVID-19 …

...Many patients are concerned about coming to visit us, to be screened for cancer, to be surveilled for their previous cancers we’ve taken out,” said Dr. Costanzo DiPerna, a thoracic surgeon in Carmichael, California, just outside Sacramento. “What I’m concerned about right now, not just for lung cancer but for all cancers, is are there patients out there that don’t want to come in because they’re afraid of getting COVID-19? And, so, they avoid mammograms, they avoid cat scans, they avoid colonoscopies … Then in two years we’re hit with this massive wave of patients that are all at a later stage of essentially incurable cancers.”

Yes, the number of people who have died of the coronavirus is massive. However, the number of those who will end up dying from a complete shutdown is, as of yet, unknown — and it could end up being just as problematic.

When stroke evaluations drop 40 percent during the COVID-19 epidemic, there’s a real problem. It’s not that we were suffering from too many stroke evaluations before the virus struck. Instead, it’s caused people to put off necessary medical care, either because of fears of the disease or because that care simply isn’t available. Make no mistake: This is a crisis. It’s already too late to stop the deaths of despair and neglect of health that this will cause. The question now is how deep it goes.

Nope .. I read scientific journals and follow the data as it evolves, I can follow multivariate analysis and determine the validity and reliability of the data based on sampling size and other statistical methods, I follow no news media outlet on the science only on the political part that pertains to China.

This tells me that USA is going to be in even more trouble when things get worse... imagine if people behaved this way en masse during two world wars and the great depression... what a time we live in when people cannot handle any stressors or adversity and cannot even think critically

Strange this is not happening all around the world.. it seems many other countries were able to pull together.

The virus has a 5 to 14 day incubation period, so the tactic in the beginning was to institute a 2 week nationwide quarantine to stop this thing in its tracks. Two months later, it became evident that the lock down didn't worked. You can run, but you cannot hide. Herd immunity seems to be the course of action now. if keeping yourself under house arrest for 2 months did not erase covid-19, odds are that another 2 months won't make a difference either. What it would do however, is cause an economic collapse, keep 30 million unemployed, cause financial ruin to many businesses, and turn the US into a third world country.. jmo

The virus only revealed what was already a problem... people, small businesses are over leveraged.

Forty percent of Americans have less than $400 in liquid cash saved for an emergency.

Also viruses spread exponentially... the shut down was to buy time not to stop the spread.

but, i am critically thinking.

we have been told for the last 2 and 1/2 months that we must social distance and no large gatherings because the disease is highly infectious . this is the foundation of all the lockdown orders.

so, here in the states, after a 3 day holiday weekend , where these things were not practiced , and there is not a large uptick in the virus, then that points to a flawed theory.

so, we will see on june 15-20, that is the target days.

Yet you believe that the government should make the decision on how you live your life. Go figure.

Yes to some extend I understand, however the number of test plays into the numbers so one has to look at that too.

Well a nation that lacks social cohesion is a nation that is looking at its demise... ripe for the picking.
A health crisis that does not bring a nation together is very telling.... look at other nations... places like New Zealand.

Governments have always told people how to live their lives it starts with the rule of law.

I see not indication yet the government has become a totalitarian state but give it time.... but the control will be China not the USA.
Until you see the real enemy there is no hope.

This occurred last week. A husband worked in a prison, and wife worked in a long term care facility. Husband contracted the virus from an inmate. The spouse contracted the virus from her husband. Neither had any symptoms, and were required to work. No one at either facility were tested until one person from the long term care facility was hospitalized. Testing at both facilities showed that nearly half of the patients in long term care were positive, and over a quarter of the inmates were positive. To date no lives have been lost, and only 10 people have been hospitalized.

When I watched the crowds at the beaches, I am reminded of just how easy Covid19 can be spread, and how many people are walking around with it and will never have any symptoms. Please, if you are one of those who feel free to mingle in close contact with others, stay away from your elderly family members and/or sick brothers and sisters. If you must visit, take a good bath, put on clean clothes, and wear a mask.

Well a nation that lacks social cohesion is a nation that is looking at its demise... ripe for the picking.
When Barack Obama made race the criterion for any qualifications (including his own) that was the end of social cohesion in America. Before him racism was on the decline and blacks were making tremendous progress on merit, not color, while there was no encouraging of illegal immigrants to break the law and undermine the black population.

A health crisis that does not bring a nation together is very telling.... look at other nations... places like New Zealand.
When you have the so-called medical *experts* (along with the lying media) presenting misleading and BOGUS information to the general public, to further their own self-serving agendas, the result is fear-mongering, not cohesion.
Governments have always told people how to live their lives it starts with the rule of law.
Once again, you seem to be blissfully unaware that the rule of law was destroyed by (1) OBAMAGATE, (2) the bogus Russian Collusion Hoax, (3) the bogus Mueller Investigation, and (4) the bogus Impeachment Coup. And only Socialists and Communists believe that the government knows best. The sane populations knows that self-serving politicians are in government for themselves, not for the good of the public.
I see not indication yet the government has become a totalitarian state but give it time.... but the control will be China not the USA.
Now this is called wilful blindness. The moment the lockdowns went into effect totalitarianism took hold of the USA, and was mightily displayed by several Democratic governors (who are now being sued). If you are not aware of this, then educate yourself. China is already totalitarian, so that is not news. What is news is that "the land of the free and the home of the brave" has surrendered to the evildoers.

I was not a fan, not sure how it has any bearing.

Okay well pull out "peer reviewed" published research, in a well respected journal and I will read it that supports "bogus"

As for the rest ... American economy was ready to collapse under the impact of strong wind.

A Consumer Economy that is not able to consume will eat itself ..... in 1918 it was a Production Economy and was able to withstand the impact of the Spanish Flu.

And no the lock down is not a totalitatian regime you would do well to study geo-political shifts throughout history. Can it lead to it that remains to be seen. But either way the USA was sunk like I said it was an economy that was teetering.

I have about as much confidence in the data coming from the government, medical, and science spokesmen as I do in my local TV weatherman's forecast.
If we had believed what some have said we would all be dead by now.

You mean Trump??? That drinking Clorox thing.? What would have killed you.? Because I listen to every word, and follow the scientist's lead, I am just fine. And because I do . The people around me are safe as well. Look at me. Being a responsible adult! LOL...

Not talking about not being a responsible adult. Not talking about Trump, or Clorox, or not listening. The fact is that many so called experts do not agree. They poke info into a computer that produces a model and then tell us to accept their scenerio of what is going to happen.
Well as far as I can tell, It has not been as bad as many of the experts predicted.

There is just something fishy about all this.
Walmart was allowed to stay open, selling crafts, sewing supplies, and garden and lawn supplies while some local independent mom and pop stores that specialized in this same product were deemed not necessary and forced to close.
And no problem with Walmart allowing 400 to 500 shopper in a store but NO, NO NO, you can not have 20 or 30 meet in a small church.

I am not taking this lightly at all, but at the same time the sky is not falling as some would have you believe.

No, I just pop a couple Advil and call it good.
Funny, I used to take Advil for my sciatica for a year and a half.(Against my doctor's recommendations ). The main reason being that I could'nt afford to be out of work.( towards the end I could barely move ). Anyhow, One day when I was at work my disc burst! (have you ever heard a grown man scram in pain? Lol)
I was rushed to the hospital, had the surgery, and was good as new and back to work 9 day's after the surgery! I have never not listened to a professional since. I've had to have 2 other surgery's on my spine
since caused by the damage I caused by not taking care of this when I should have.
