Most people are honest enough to admit that they are (or at least were) "blind". In other words, we admit that we didn't know God, or had difficulty understanding what is really being said in the bible. And although perhaps embarrassed, we were humble enough to receive instruction from someone who is willing to guide us.

Then, at some point, we met someone who said "Hey, you need to know about God (or Jesus). Let me teach you."

And we said "Ok. That sounds good." And we began to let them lead us, or perhaps to take us to someone even more knowledgeable. And they began to teach us how to "see" certain scriptures.

However, there is a danger hidden within this scenario, and Jesus warns us about it. He said "If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch".

The question becomes "Wow, that's a scary thought. How could I find out if the person that leads me is blind?"

Well, you could ask the person leading you how to recognize a "blind leader". And I almost guarantee that they will give you an answer that does not point at him or herself as a blind leader.

What most will do is to point you to the scriptures to find the answers....encouraging you to revisit the scriptures they've told you are the most important ones... and that they've been teaching you how to interpret. Please don't miss the importance of the previous sentence. They know what you will find if you look at the scriptures the way they have taught you.

Now you're left with a problem.... How can you know the TRUTH if you may have been taught to "see" by the blind?

If you look at the scriptures by the way you were taught, you will only find the answers you’ve been taught to find...“Seeing” the scriptures through the eyes of your leaders, whether they are blind or not.

If you try to look at the scriptures without what you’ve been taught, you’re only left with yourself...and you’ve already admitted that you were blind before learning from your leaders.

So what should you do about this problem?

Simple… When we can’t “see” and don’t know who to trust, we need to directly ask the only person we can truly trust (God) until he answers.

God cannot lie. And he will only speak truth...even about your leaders. If they are blind leaders, God would tell that truth to you if you ever gain the ability to hear from God directly...and THAT is the reason you are told that God no longer speaks.

Does God speak? Yes. He says “My sheep hear my voice”. And he cannot lie. <--that means he still speaks and at least some still hear..

So... Have you heard his voice? If not, you should be asking sincerely why not, and how you can. But I recommend that you ask the one you can trust, not the ones you should have asked about before trusting them with your eternity. (You need to go to God, not man...not even me, if you REALLY want to know the truth.)

BTW, Just because you can’t see clearly doesn’t mean you can’t hear. :)

But he speaks only through scripture. Paul says it thoroughly furnishes us. People imagine God is speaking to them and end up in all kinds of difficulties. Even when tongues and prophecy were in the church before the scriptures were complete, Paul said they only gave partial knowledge. So it's important to take the sword of the Spirit that is the Word of God.

He doesn’t speak ONLY through scripture. When people KNOW God is talking to them, it prevents all kinds of difficulties. I would argue words misunderstood, or amplified have created more trouble in the church. The sword of the Spirit is to battle non-mortal enemies, like false doctrine, evil rulers and the occasional demon. If you haven’t heard God speak, you should find a quiet place and empty your mind and allow the Lord to fill it. Not a huge thing here but so you understand that there is a difference Word (logos) of God is Christ, word (rhema) of God is a written scripture. You were correct in applicatiion though.

Psychos "hear" God speaking. God speaks through his word only.

Until I was 25 I could not read the Word, not any part of it. It made no sense and was completely a jumble. When the Holy Spirit entered into me, upon my realization that the Maker is all that is, the written word came alive, although I did not have a Bible at that moment in my life.
On that same day, at a coffee house on campus called the Red Herring, I was moved to leave my cup and walk through a door to a store room where I ENCOUNTERE A BOOK, OPENED AND FAACE DOWN.
I picked it up and began to read on the page it was opened to. I found myself saying wow, that is true, that is true, and I kept reading to the bottom of the page. I do not remember which passage it was I read, or passages, but when I saw the top it was Isaiah. Looking at the front of the cover I saw it said "The Oxford Study Bible." The following day I went to the student store and bought one just like it.
I have been reading versions of theWord in several languages to this day, though now I have to listen to the Word. The good Lord brought the Internet just in time for me.
Nothing wrong with not understanding what one reads in the Bible as long as one learns God is all that is, and comes to Him as His creature. He will do the rest, amen.

When you start out with a premise formed in error you will always end in error. The blind leading the blind is not Christians discipling one another. The blind leading the blind is unbelievers leading unbelievers into error and away from truth.

Christians are commanded to disciple new believers, baptizing them in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit leads believers into the truth, yea the Truth.

Of course you cannot teach the truth if you do not know the Truth.

Most of what God has spoken to me has been actual scripture. But I didn't know it was actual scripture until God spoke it and then I looked it up...

Most people believe the same as you. That God doesn't speak and those who say He Does are psycho or have some sort of psychological issue.

But scripture, which you DO BELIEVE, explicitly says that My Sheep Hear My Voice. So I don't really understand why people who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ don't believe that He Speaks to His People.

Let's say you have people that call themselves Christian, but believe that you have to work your way to Salvation, and they are teaching or discipling other people in this way.

Would you say this is the blind leading the blind?

Or is this Christian discipling?

I’m sorry that you consider Christ, many of the church forefathers and “brothers” psychos. How one defines “love” can make that statement true or false. Occasionally the Lord calls you to and from situations for His purposes that may war against one’s “affections”. Keep reading your Bible, it is a wonderful book. However, it’s an instruction manual, for practical application. Bruce Lee never mastered martial arts from reading about it. It’s a map that you have to follow to the treasure. It itself is not the treasure.

Your question answers itself. It matters not what people call themselves it only matters if God knows them. False professors teach false doctrine and are known by their false doctrine.

If discipleship is teaching to make more disciples of a particular sect it will be made known. If discipleship is teaching of Christ that too will be evident. Do they teach gifts or do they teach a greater personal knowledge of Christ?

“He that hath an ear, let him hear.”
Well, I would wager most people who preach and teach a particular theology from the scripture are doing that believing that what they are saying is accurate. They probably made a prayer asking for truth and help from God, then proceeded to go preach and teach in faith, assuming that if it *feels* right and people are agreeing with what they say then they must be on the right track.

This is not necessarily true because, as we have seen, the Bible has spawned many interpretations and denominations by people who were fully convinced they are correct and that anyone who says otherwise must be preaching the "doctrine of demons." That also is not necessarily true. Someone is wrong because God is the only Truth.

The Bible doesn't address all possible theological questions in a manner that removes all doubt in no uncertain terms. We do not have the benefit of asking one of the apostles what something means either. We have to ask God, who sends His Holy Spirit to help us, but wait, there's a catch; not everyone can *hear* God's voice and if they claim to they'll have to face ridicule and accusations of being called insane.

To the writers of the Bible there was nothing bad about hearing a disembodied voice in their ear. Had they not heard the voice of God, perhaps we would not have the Bible as we know it today because they wouldn't have known what to write. Also, since they could literally hear God's voice, don't you think *other* spirits eventually realized that and dogpiled on with their own ulterior motives trying to get their attention? Yes. That's why it's necessary to know Truth so God's voice is recognizable in a sea of other voices trying to get their attention.

The core themes of the Bible are this: turn to Jesus in faith and trust, repent, give love to all in Jesus's name, look forward to the second coming of Christ, and don't look back. People get tangled up in a web of semantics, nuances, and technicalities when they debate scripture and often end up further from the truth than when they started.

Even seasoned Bible scholars should occasionally return to the elementary teachings, the original foundation of Jesus.

So, just because a person calls themselves a Christian it doesn't necessarily make them a Christian? They can still be an un-believer and teach un-believer doctrines?

I agree with that.

It is written the letter kills. The letter with the Holy Spirit guiding is life/giving for it is Jesus/Yeshua understood.
God is the same yesterday, today and always. After what is called time is finished we will all understand all. In the meantime if God speaks to a brother or sisgter in order to teach exactly what He wants the individual to know, do not discount it, for this is the way it has been for the members of the Body of Yeshua since He ascended back to the Father Eternal.
Anyone who believes will know if what has been said is true, or it will be held in the heart until understanding comes to him

I like to use the analogy, just because I throw on a hockey jersey with the number 99 on it and say, “I’m Wayne Gretzky!” doesn’t mean I am. My performance will clearly betray my claim. The fruit will authenticate the tree.
