For the sake of new members who may not know scripture or the Exodus at all, or that well, be aware that Moses did not pour molten gold down the throats of the Israelite's, "the children of Israel".
We have to be aware in our zeal for the word that exagerating or using metaphor, etc... to describe scripture may lead those looking for scriptural understanding to not know the difference. Especially if they've never read a verse in the Bible. Hope that helps. :) GBU.
Yea sorry if my summary is unclear, I am just going by memory here. You are partly right, Moses didn't pour molten gold down their throats, but he made the idol into powder and then poured it down their throats lol.

Very interesting episode in the Bible. Also kind of an interesting note that I didn't remember before, but now re-reading the episode, is that the covenant with Abraham (which is signified by the circumcision as discussed earlier) also is cited here when Moses pleads with Lord God not to destroy the Israelites.

Exodus 32:7-20

7 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

14 And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.

20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

That's equivocating. You know no one who says the law is still in effect are saying the "tablts of stone" are still in effect.
Why don't you take some time to study 2 Corinthians 3 and the epistle to the Hebrews. Then Acts 15.

What would you say was the purpose of Moses doing that? Making them drink of water that contained the ashes of the former golden calf.

My own personal thoughts are that it is to make them acknowledge their great sin. Alternatively, perhaps also it was kind of a spur of the moment reaction, or at least to me the text seems to indicate Moses is taken by surprise at this event. Even Joshua seems somewhat surprised as before they enter the camp he can tell something is going on, but Joshua mistakes the sound of their worshipping the golden calf for the sound of battle. As they approach the camp and see what is really happening it says Moses' anger waxes hot

Aside from that we know elsewhere in the Bible through both direct commands and also the examples of heroes that one is suppose to totally destroy idols, so Moses destroying the idol so thoroughly, both by burning it and also grinding it to powder are quite in line with that precept. Perhaps Moses just took it the next step and poured it down their throats as a testimony against them. Also in line with the biblical precepts regarding idolatry, Moses then commands the Levites to immediately begin putting the wicked to death to cleanse the camp of those that turned against the Lord God whom led them out of Egypt.

The answer is in the Law/Torah of YHVH. JeremiahsCup, the word of God will always explain the word of God my friend. We don't have to form an opinion because 100% of the time if it is our opinion we are wrong ;)

Moses didn't just act in the spur of the moment. The Torah teach us that if a husband is suspicious of his wife and think she has an affair, she should go to the the priest and what the priest then would do is take soil and put it in a bowl with water. The priest would then do a ritual where the woman would confess or reject the claim. (Numbers 5:11-31)

Israel agreed that they would be a bride for YHVH. They accepted His ketubah (marriage proposal / Torah). So God acted according to His Torah. Moses knew what to do, he acted according to the Torah when he made the calf into dust and let them drink the water. The ones with impure hearts died and the rest of them lived.

Easy as that :)

God bless friends

You have decided, it seems to me, that when the Lord wrote tablets in stone it was symbolic of law without love. I think that is not the way God meant for us to think of it, but rather as law that lasts as long as our world lasts, as stone endures.

What law can you think of that is not as expression of love? Diet restrictions are not, they have been taken away.

Natural law is closely connected to all God's law and the law in stone is part of God's law. In Job we are told to look at the stars and their order to see God's law with our eyes.

I spent seven years on the ocean as a commercial fisherman. It is wonderful to live with the order and beauty of that ocean. It also expresses the power greater than the power any man can produce. You must respect it and listen to its warnings.

I think threads like this help to understand where we are in our walk with God. For those who become offended and then react offensively, they're taking baby steps on the path. The infancy journey belongs to those who are deeply vulgar and defend that by insisting our Lord Jesus behaved just like that. Blasphemy.

We're here to learn from one another as God leads us. There is nothing to feed our scriptural meat when dark forces enter and seek to assail the people of Christ. However, that too is a lesson. Praise God for His armor.
The Ekklesia is world wide and God loves us. Take comfort in that when the enemy challenges you at any level.

if one drinks ground-up gold/metals mixed with water, it's going to have a purgative-effect -
the flesh was being purged as an example to show that they needed to be Spiritually purged -
like it is written:
'Every branch in Me shall be purged'...
ROMANS 15:4.
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through
patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

No. That is what you have assumed. But your problem has always been trying to straddle both the Old And the New Covenants instead of obeying God and Christ and staying with the New Covenant.

You have been shown over and over again that no one can honestly and in good faith cling to the Old Covenant any longer. You want to celebrate the feasts in a bogus and compromised manner when there is no temple, no Levitical priesthood, and n o sacrificial system. The same applies to many of the OT laws.

When I was first taught about the feasts of God, I never realised that it was so complex and full of prophecies of Jesus’ first and second coming. Interestingly enough God never said these are your feast days, but he said these are My feast days.

Thing is; study it, don’t study it… but if it blesses somebody why try to hurt or discourage them on a public forum and vice versa? We all have different journeys with God. The Bible is a living document (my opinion, no Bible verse for this ;)) because 10 people can read the same peace and you will have 10 different opinions depending on the person.
