The scriptures are always in harmony and don't contradict. So lets analyse what Solomon is saying. We will put the surrounding verses:
Ecclesiastes 9
3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. 4 But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5 For the living know that they will die;
But the dead know nothing,
And they have no more reward,
For the memory of them is forgotten.
6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished;
Nevermore will they have a share
In anything done under the sun.
- This piece's CONTEXT is between the red verses above. The context is "what is done under the sun" - in other words the activities on mankind on the earth.
-The Dead DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENS ON THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH. THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF THE GOINGS ON ANYMORE. THEY DONT KNOW WHO THE PRESIDENT OF THE US IS. THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS ARE DOING, etc. THEY KNOW NOTHING.
Lets repost the above verses but with the "Dead" inserted to bring the verses to life (mind the anti-pun)

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
The dead have no reward.
