I would think we would look to the spiritual understanding hid from the lost revealed in parables. .

How would that apply when fasting for blood work .Can it be offered as a fast to be heard on high?

Why did the man in Luke 18:12 boast he fasted twice on the sabbath and on the same sabbath day gave 10 % ?

How many meals fits the Orthodox understanding at that time? Three? Unlimited ?
And what is the spiritual understanding his from the lost revealed in the parables?

Biblical fasting has to do with the discipline of sharing the gospel on a day set aside from normal work( 6 days) as that needed to maintain these bodies of death.

It has nothing to do with the work depriving oneself but everything to do with sharing our bread, both the literal bread and the hidden Manna, the word of God, the gospel .

Starving oneself does not bring us closer to be heard on high .It is not the kind of fast that can drive out lying spirits called demons . It is not that which comes out of a man that defiles them or gives them the spiritual unseen strength .

Defining the bread as to its kind is needed .

One bread as manna which literal is a question. What is it? , The bread of unfamiliarity leads to eternal life. No lukewarm familiarity with God not seen. We walk by faith the unseen eternal

God is not a man a us. Familiarity breeds hatred and contempt it was cause to be misunderstood byjesus's own family. Men looking to the flesh of familiarity .

It leads to the grave and returning to the lifeless spiritless dust it was formed of.

It would seem men have turned it (not eating) into a sign gift as a way of confirming something outwardly .
So then fasting has nothing to do with denying yourself of anything? Why is there so many interpretations understanding of the Bible. o_O

When fasting, we should eat simply and modestly. Monastics eat only one full meal a day on strict fast days, two meals on "Wine and oil" days.

I fast on Wednesdays and Fridays in the Orthodox tradition so kind of like this

http://www.abbamoses.com/fasting.html

http://ww1.antiochian.org/node/50791

Its also as a spiritual communal experience with fellow Christians
I really liked the second link, thank you for sharing.

"The first is the 'breaking of the fast' by Adam in Paradise. He ate of the forbidden fruit. This is how man's original sin is revealed to us. Christ, the new Adam, — and this is the second event — begins by fasting. Adam was tempted and succumbed to temptation. The result of Adam's failure is expulsion from Paradise and death. The fruit of Christ's victory is the destruction of death and return to Paradise. It is clear, that in this perspective, fasting is revealed to us as something decisive and ultimate in importance. It is not mere 'obligation', a custom; it is connected with the very mystery of life and death, of salvation and damnation."

I understand at the time it was written the fast included three meals and is why the twice on the sabbath became a false boast. Missing the whole reason for the fast..

Fasting (eating) has to do with sharing both food for our bodies clothing them and food the disciples knew not of. Food for our soul as the gospel . (both working as one )

The Bible informs us their must be heresies as varying opinions that make of denominations, sects divisions . The kingdom of God comes not by that in which the eyes see the temporal. The gospel looks beyond the temporal, corrupted.

2 Corinthians 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Many private interpretations like finger prints as personal commentaries because people differ from one another. The hermeneutics as prescriptions given for rightly dividing vary . Some literalize the hidden gospel meaning. .

A good example is the book of Revelation the last book. In the opening passage we are given the key to understanding. Not only is it inspired but also signified the language of parables. It helps us understand what Christ meant when he said without parables the signified language of God he spoke not. The parables as the signified signature of God is designed teach us how to walk by faith the unseen eternal. Many simply literalize it

Revelation 1 King James Version (KJV)1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

So I didn't understand the bolded underlined parts if you could kindly clarify, please. What do you mean by hidden gospel meaning and what do you mean by signified the language of parables. And what is the signified language of God?

Thanks, I can try...Remember he has lovingly commanded us to study to show our selves approved to him not seen, as a faith principle. Two walking together.

He has no left us a orphans with no interpretation instructions

Because God could of written the bible so that a child can understand. But he purposely wrote it so that it would be difficult to discover many truths hid in parables. He declared in Mark:4 11-12

And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: That seeing they may see, and "not perceive"; and hearing they may hear, and "not understand"; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.Mark:4 11-12

In a parable called a proverb he adds interpretation instructions..using kings to represent believers as a kingdom of priest that hold out the gospel. Giving us the honor to search out the signified understanding. therefore using prescriptions like that of Revelation 1:1. or 2 Corihtinans 4:

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. Proverbs 25:2

2 Corinthians 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

God also declares in 1 Corinthians 2: 11-14

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual (unseen) things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.1 Corinthians 2: 11-14

Applying the signified prescription. Again using the formola (1 Corinthians 2: 11-14)for rightly dividing the parable. Using the things seen the temporal to give us the unseen spiritual understanding that is hid in parables. Like Chapter 20.

Can't see a angel it could read I heard. The things seen the temporal to give us the spiritual eternal understanding. A key signifies the gospel .Bottomless pit the never ending judgment .Great chain the power of the gospel to bind . Hand to repsents will. Old serpent the spirt of lies. etc. A multitude of metphors as the signified language of God.

Revelation 20 King James Version (KJV) And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

So you're basically saying its a big parable, metaphor and not literal? and what does that have to do with fasting?

One mistake is to make fasting just about eating or not eating literal food only .The true fast covers much more than which literally goes into a persons belly..

There is more than one level of understanding as the signified language of God . Parables as prophecy can be historically true and yet double to give the unseen spiritual application, the gospel hid.

Like with the disciples they could not cast out demons or the spirit of lies. The kind of lies that only can only come out with the gospel the power of God to loosen the grip of lying spirits. (prayer and fasting) Which is not just abstaining from eating food . Fasting in the bible is controlled or regulated eating a diet . Not eating never drove out one spirit of lies . It drives in hunger.

A good example in with John the Baptist in a parable found in Luke7.

There John was struggling knowing his end was coming. Having doubts as to whether Jesus was the one who represented the gospel . In a answer to prayer he sent for a answer which was followed by a series of metaphors that confirmed the gospel as a true fast. Which is again sharing one substance .

The gospel gives us the sight to see who were previous spiritually blind .Those who previously walked by sight as the spiritually lame are given the faith that comes from hearing the gospel to walk after the unseen. And other metaphors that represent salvation is given. The lepers to represent unbelief(unclean) are cleansed. Those dead in their trespasses and sins are raised to new spirit life, all of the needs of those poor as spiritually bankrupt are met in the gospel. To include covering the nakedness of those who know not the gospel as the righteousness of God, clothed with Christ .

The parable gave confidence to John so he could finish the work. The lying spirts that caused John to doubt were cast out. Many focus on the literal and it loses it gospel understanding

Luke 7:22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

FRIDAY FAST TODAY

the Friday fast is done in commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. Fasting from all animal products so just vegan meals today.

I plan on having avocado toast (lol it's a hipster thing I know but I have avocados that need to be eaten!) for my first meal and then a tofu vegetable stirfry with rice as my second meal and that will be it. I will also have lots of coffee and tea (black) and water most likely
