Excuse me, your comment is very rude and ungodly, you don't know this persons situation, she is saying that people are twisting the word of God where she is at. God looks at the heart is often an excuse that people make that is unscriptural to destroy modesty.

You should apologize to her for your rudeness.

Also for a general edifcation for people reading this: make sure if your going to judge things thats its a righteous judgment, because God will judge every idle word.

classic ad hominum attack

rather than be honest about the reason for the op, ' talking about how immodest women are, with an appeal to scripture, the op resorts to a personal attack with a touch of self righteousness

it's been less then entertaining

Jesus said: If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. Matthew 5:29

The topic of modesty opens up a lot of other issues that are a problem in the church today. When I was younger I was surrounded with some wonderful and godly friends. They had beautiful hearts, were modest, caring and what did they hear? The young men insisted on "hot" Christian women. They wanted all the qualities they heard about in church but those took a backseat to a girl in heels with blonde highlights (no slight on blondes) and a "hot" body. My friends were not unattractive but the message was loud and clear from the men and other women.
Fast forward to today. When I was 40, most of my friends were married. Suddenly there was an epidemic number of Christian men who were leaving their marriages. Their wives' figures may have altered, child birth can do that, and that there are some changes for all of us as we age. Their hair was turning grey, so some felt compelled to dye it, and so on but the bottom line was that they no longer were as "hot" as the new younger women who "looked after themselves". These girls had time and money to go to the gym, buy expensive outfits, spend a lot of money on cosmetics and spa treatments. They also had the beauty of youth. I saw too many women standing in shock as they were abandoned for looking modest. These women focused their time on caring for their husbands and children, serving at church and in the community. What I'm saying is that women have learned that this is not, in practice, respected in the church. What men need to do is move away from the double standard of telling women to dress one way while chasing the women who dress the other way. We need to teach our young men to respect and search out real beauty. They need to be loyal. Part of their modesty is to uplift the wives of their youth rather than needing eye candy to show off for their own pride. They show off their car, their rolex and their young wives. This is the area of modesty and right values that is so off track. If women were really valued for the right things I believe the fashion statements would follow. Sadly, as long as women are told that their only value is in "looking hot", we will not have change.
It is truly sad. These are just some thoughts for discussion. Also, God bless you, to the men who are faithful and treat the wives of their youth with dignity, honour and love. I also have friends with good husbands.
If we believe in modesty as a godly attribute then the women who show it need to be treated with honour.

you have hit the nail on the head here

obviously my objections to this thread have nothing to do with the Bible, but rather the hypocrisy you have so eloquently revealed in your post

I like what you said at the end there about sound doctrine which produces love and righteousness (this is the goal of the gospel), but indeed you are mistaken about the verse, if you look a bit more closely you can see: "1st Timothy 2:9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire" It's talking about clothing that is modest which would include not dressing in a flaunting type of way that is unreasonable and showy, but also not dressing like a Jezebel :)
Ok, but so what? i mean Modesty is obviously more of a problem for women than men, hence its applied that way in the bible (1st Tim 2:9).
Hahaha, you apparently don't live in the 21st century. So the passage literally refers to gold and braids, so it applies to men and boys with their flashy expensive and outlandish clothes as well.
Just because you think it's about women showing their curves don't mean your right, it just means you are reading in your own ideas or what you have been taught wrongfully.
Modest literally means "keeping due measure".
In other words no over or under dressing, or use of jewelry, or hairs style.

Why can’t women dress like a woman and men like a man. We all know what that looks like. The world should not dictate our fashion.

this reminded me of something that happened in one of my college literature class. i went to a bible school, so supposedly everyone is a christian. anywho, a guy mentioned how a lot of guys struggle with lust, and it's hurtful when girls dressed inappropriately. i remember thinking that i agreed with him, and yet, i started thinking about some of my hallmates who loved Jesus, loved the ministry, dressed modestly, didn't play with guys' emotions, and yet have never been on a date because they were never asked out. i knew why i wasn't asked out (because i'm the shy introvert kid who doesn't talk to people lol), but i couldn't understand why these girls were ignored when it came to the dating scene.

either way, the focus of everything we do is to glorify the Lord, not ourselves.

It been my experience that when ever this subject is inevitably broached, amid Christian circles; the initiator of the subject, has no idea what modest means.
Modest, means keeping due or correct measure; Nothing more. And it applies to all Christians in all spheres of their lives. It kind of goes well with the all things to all people example Paul set.
I know the letters to Timothy was about how to manage the church, but if you notice Paul said that how a man managed his house reflected on how he would manage the church, so the concepts for personal behavior is universal; in and out of the church, and for all Christians. So yes that passage says women should dress modestly not wearing gold and braids, it doesn't leave the door open for men to do it.

You have conflated several issues which are only loosely related.

Outward physical beauty and shape have nothing directly to do with modesty. A person who is physically unattractive can be very immodest, and a person who is "hot" (your term) can be very modest... and still attract a lot of attention.

Dissatisfaction within a marriage, and lust leading to marital unfaithfulness are problems to be solved within the marriage. Again, modesty has essentially nothing to do with this. A man (or woman) who is lustful will find a target somewhere, and unfaithfulness is as much or more an issue of inappropriate relationship as inappropriate clothing.

Modesty is about dressing (and acting) appropriately for the situation without intentionally attracting undue attention.

Agree, it depends what is meant by modesty. I wouldn't expect women to cover their hair or wear dresses to the ground. I would wear long trousers (pants) not shorts.

I would rather someone was in church in the 'wrong' clothes than not at all but better in decent clothes. Here in the Philippines there are a lot of poor people and people live in shorts and

hmm well, i just went to bed thats all, not really a fall out... Anyway my intent from the start was to talk about modesty, maybe you should go back and read the post and yes Modesty is more a Women's issue than a Mans (1st Tim 2:9), hence it also applies to Men, but more important for Women. Im going to get a coffee, have a blessed day in Jesus Christ :)

i believe modesty begins with the heart. if i'm not doing it for the Lord, then it's just a burden.

Modesty is about one's attitude.

Although the NT doesn't have specific prohibitions against specific types or articles of clothing, choices of outfits (among other things) fall under the umbrella of "what reason am I doing this for?". What one wears (or doesn't wear) isn't the only outward expression of modesty (or lack thereof); there are many other behaviors and activities which are covered by that concept.
