Hello to everyone out there! I have been searching for a decent chat site, where respect and decency is the norm. I've joined some recently as I moved, but they were full of people swearing, making dirty jokes, and asking me for personal info, or for 'adult' conversations - not my thing at all.
I am not a Christian, but studied with the Jehovah's Witnesses who had some very odd ideas. I eventually left as I got completely confused by everything they were telling me. They were all quite nice people, but I could not agree with their version of God's word. I didn't get baptised, but was made to feel completely ostracised and guilty about disassociating with them. I then met a girl who was part of a new Christian church, where they believe in speaking in tongues, rolling their eyes etc. That was a bit too weird for me as well. So I don't know what to believe in anymore!
I have many questions re the bible, God and Jesus, so you can all help me out.
I hope you are all well tonight and that I can make some new friends!
Cheers :)

Hi Tasha and welcome!

In case you end up not staying long, here is THE Gospel by which we must be saved. May God open your eyes to it's Truth. Be Blessed.

THE Gospel unto Salvation:
God wrapped Himself in human flesh in the form of His Son, Jesus the Messiah. Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin. He suffered, was crucified, and died to pay OUR sin debt. He was raised to life from the grave to prove He had defeated death. If you confess Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that His Father resurrected Him to Life on the 3rd day, you WILL be saved. You will be filled, and sealed with the Holy Spirit, who will empower ALL to turn from their sins. The sin of adultery, lying, stealing, homosexuality, gossip, slander, drunkenness, covetousness, etc... And most importantly the sin of DEAD works, or a moral life in an attempt to EARN Salvation. He will also equip you to love like He did and do good works for HIS Glory.

You are already real blessing to us and are much closer to the Kingdom than you know. Some of my closest friends came out of the JW. True Christianity is not more complicated than JW 'doctrine', but is far simpler. Just shave off all the junk about eye-rolling and physical baptism and works-based salvation and just come as you are, just like the thief on the cross did. You are a beautiful person on the inside. You are the kind He is looking for. Just acknowledge that Jesus is God and that His blood is the only way to be saved from our sin that we are all born into at birth. I have seen some of your other posts already. I am so excited and happy about you and for you, sister Tasha! :)

Welcome to CC, Tasha66!

You'll find a variety of opinions on biblical matters expressed here, especially in the Bible Discussion Forum. It can get a little... unpleasant, so you might want to stick to more congenial forums at first. :)

Hi Dino. That's OK if it gets unpleasant. I work in a healthcare area where I hear stories of an horrific nature every day - I care for people who may be paedophiles, murderers, people who have cut their own throats etc. I am used to it and I have developed a very thick skin, and a different type of 'coping' mentality. I'm here to ask the tough questions and to get some answers. People won't like the questions I have to ask, but there are questions I NEED to ask that I've struggled with for years. But I appreciate the warning!

Hi, Tasha! Welcome. Speaking in tongues, if someone does have this gift, is not supposed to be disorderly with rolling of eyes and is usually done in private, unless one also is able to interpret to the church members what are they praying so everyone can benefit. The spirit of God is never chaotic or disorderly. I am sorry that you had to go through it, and hope that you will find the truth and soundness in teachings of Jesus and the Bible you're looking for. Jesus rewards those that diligently seek Him. :)

Hi Soul Weaver! Yes that experience with the rolling eyes and speaking in tongues, I found a wee bit disconcerting. That was with a church down here in Oz called the Victory Christian Church. The people were all nice I must say. When I was studying with the Jehovah's Witnesses, they said God / Jesus wouldn't contact you like that, and that that is what the devil does to fool you. So I didn't feel it was quite right (well not for me anyway). I care for people who are admitted to mental health (MH) units who speak in tongues, and many of them are seriously disturbed and require treatment, as they are too labile (they usually have other MH issues too). These are some of the questions I have come here to ask re all of these things, & to get some answers and hopefully some understanding. I might not like or agree with the answers I get, but that is what I'm here for and it's part of life to disagree, but in an adult fashion. You don't always get everyone agreeing with you in this life. I'm so looking forward to chatting!
Cheers :)

I might try to help your clarity, but have in mind I only speak from my own experience and am not an authority. Speech is expression of the spirit pouring out. People might express their own spirit through vocalizing words, but is that God's spirit? People believe speaking in tongues is a gift where you open your mouth and talk. Not so. It is more a gift of listening and speaking the words you hear, from God, in spirit. But a mentally ill person might babble words out of the point of their illness. This is not the gift of speaking in tongues by the Holy Spirit.
I speak in tongues at times, usually words come when I sing to God in praise or in intercessory prayer. At times it was Hebrew (found out later), but it doesn't have to be in a known language at all. I also interpret although I am not always able to. Some people who think they are speaking in tongues actually utter perversities. I recall a video where people were shaking like possessed upon supposedly receiving the "Holy Spirit" and this individual went speaking in "tongues" over them. It was awful. I believe this is why the "tongues" you've witnessed disturbed you... This is not the gift of tongues it's the counterfeit.
