I have read the king James and the New king James Version plus the New International Version . I find the New Internationan eaiser to understand but at the sametime they leave out a lot of information that you would find in the King James and the New King James . So I find myself cross refersioning the NIV with the King James to get God's word they way it should be , My problem is I am stuck on wich on to read . I so would like your opions .

Any bible that you can learn from....HAH.....

I use a few....I use a King Jimmy, but look every word up from Greek and Hebrew, I like the Jewish Tanach for O.T. reads.....a New American Standard is pretty good and grammatically closer than most.....

Thank you Melach , I think that King James is the best but I find it hard to follow at times . I guess that is when I need to dig more into recharch to understand it more .

I use the NASB for daily reading. It's not great for reading aloud, as the sentence structure doesn't flow easily in many places, but it is highly accurate and just fine for silent reading, because I'm not fighting to say the words in the order that I would naturally. My brain just interprets as I read.

I read the NIV for many years. It's much better for flow, at the cost of a little precision of translation.

Both are excellent translations overall.

I do use the KJV at times, but I find that many of the words no longer mean what they meant in 1611, so it requires more homework. Its strength is that it is best known, even among those who don't read the Bible regularly. It's still a good translation, and you can learn all you need to with it.

On what basis would you make such a determination?

Hi @ShowMercy, if you'd prefer to read a true translation that is easier to understand than the KJV (and more accurate than the NIV .. which is actually a VERY good paraphrase), why not continue on with the NKJV (since you already own it)? Like @Dino246 and @dcontroversal, I too am a fan of the NASB (it is my principle/go-to translation, in fact), but I regularly use the NKJV too (as well the NIV-UK, ESV, KJV, ASV and several other translations and paraphrases), just FYI.

What a blessing it is to have access to all of them for study purposes (y)(y)

p.s. - just FYI, the NASB is about to release a new update (the last two were in 1977 & 1995, I believe).

BTW, if you want a quick look at how the NASB 95' translates the NT, all of the verses in my signature line below are taken from it.

If I feel the NIV is reading diffrent to the point that some information did not sound right I would go to the King James . Example . When I was reading the NIV about the death of Christ it did not say anything abouth the two theifs hanging next to Jesus .

This may sound funny to you but what is NASB . I do like the way the verses read that you share in your posts .

That sounds like you believe that the KJV is "correct". What if you had become familiar with the NIV first? On what objective basis would you consider the KJV more reliable than the NIV?

NASB = New American Standard Bible

I should have mentioned that. Very sorry :oops:

p.s. - there is also the ASV/American Standard Version (a predecessor of the NASB 95'), and the NAB, the New American Bible, which is a modern Roman Catholic Bible that has nothing to do with the NASB translation, just FYI.
