Is Jesus dying for our sins synonymous with Jesus taking the punishment for our sins?

Being unjustly punished by men, yes. Being justly punished by his Father, no.
Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.Ex.23:7
Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen. Deu.27:25
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD. Pro.17:5

God is a God of mercy and grace. He is not merciless.
Death is in dying leading towards a end of life the process of suffering the pangs of hell the workings of a corrupted creation as a living suffering here under the sun .the wrath of God being revealed form heaven (Roman 1:18)
Christ the Spirit of God because Jesus suffered the wrath of the father in his corrupted body signified as sinful he was used as demonstration of Isaiah 53 , promised in the garden in Genesis 3:15.bruise heel.... crush head.
The written law in respect to the things seen with our eyes kills as the father of lies used in the garden as a murderer from the beginning hating human kind as those that have a form (flesh and blood) The father in heaven working with the son in perfect submission poured out wrath on the Son of man and when to hard to bear alone the Son would cry out and the father pour out his spirt . . . finishing that which bring the peace of God that surpasses our understanding,
We believe what it says.... it as it is written gives us the understanding.. . ultimately to do that which the letter of the law could not .heal by a work of the faith of Christ's three day labor of love. he finished the work . He works it out in us with us. called the "law of faith" (believing God)

what does this say?
for sure it says He bore our suffering.
but does it say that He was stricken, afflicted and punished or does it only say that we considered Him so?
Surely He took up our pain and bore our suffering,
yet we considered Him punished by God, stricken by Him, and afflicted.

but does it say that He was stricken, afflicted and punished or does it only say that we considered Him so?

At the hands of people who wanted to shut him up, yes.
For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God....if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God....because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
1Pet.2:19-21
In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted 2Tim.3:12
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me....for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Mt.5:11-12
For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God....if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God....because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

Read this then tell me:

He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."
In no uncertain terms God afflicted His own son to pay for our sinful ways. This way we can't say God does not understand our suffering. Because He took the form of sinful man and defeated sin.

It pleased the Father to bruise the Son because,

“My child, don’t make light of the LORD’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you, for the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all. Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever? No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. Heb.12:5-11

JESUS was GOD according to the Spirit but man saw only the flesh part of JESUS.The part many don't understand Is why did JESUS take the punishment for our sins.
When Adam sinned he was disobedient to the voice of GOD and would have to then be perfect of his own strength In order to relate with GOD but because of the weakness of his flesh he would fall short of the glory of GOD.The law was added because now man would need to know what GODs perfect standard of righteousness was and man would have to fulfil the law perfectly In order to be accepted by GOD
The bible says that GOD loves righteousness so then everything would have to be done the right way.GOD IS ALMIGHTY and could have just started over again but that would make HIM unjust because HE IS SOVEREIGN so then there was only one way to do this righteous and just and that would be the WORD of GOD coming to earth as GOD and man to righteously fulfill the law.
The law demanded that anyone breaking the law should be put to death.
JESUS had mercy on many but the pharisees looked at It that HE had broken the law.
JESUS died on a cross satisfying the demand of the law and was perfectly righteous before GOD.
Now a new covenant has been put In place and the Issue now Is faith.
All the law and the prophets Is summed up In one word,Love.

The part many don't understand is who Jesus was being punished by,
They hated me without a cause. Jn.15:25
The law added so there would be no question about what sin is, who it's against and why we need God's grace,
sin, so that it would be shown to be sin, produced death in me through what is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful. Rom.7:13
So Jesus should not have been put to death.
Yes, religious leaders misinterpreted what the scriptures say and so believed Jesus was being punished by God.
