Should a Christian get a Tattoo?

and Matthew 5:18 factors in to this. He also said it is not abolished (meaning no more) but that he is the fulfillment. As in we can now be successful in pursuing holiness and righteousness through him and his power and guidance.

NOT throw it all out...you do you man. I paid it all...don't bother with that stuff anymore. Nonsense. and argument could be made for the dietary laws being abolished. but that's it as far as I can tell.

I'm not here to argue either dude, just that there are a whole lot of things that are left out of the NT because they were already written.

You surely couldn't expect the Lord to be a fan of me drinking blood, cross dressing or having sex with animals right?

Even though none of those things appear in the NT at all?


We just need to recognize that each thing must be looked at closer than we always have in this day and age.

As to Tattoos it can go a long way to open up a dialogue with a stranger when you ask them about their ink or show an interest.

Leviticus is clear enough to me. Same goes with cross dressing...that's also not in the NT but in the OT, and drinking blood ;)


I've known some well respected christians who let their children get tattoos and it's all just rather confusing. Am I being judgemental or legalistic? I don't think so. It seems clear.


What's unclear is how most believers see it. The only encouragement I've given people is to tattoo a scripture reference to your favorite scripture if you aren't going to take no for an answer. Binding his word around you in a sense.

I personally thought about getting Job 31:1 around my wrist, but it just didn't ever feel right. Practical? Sure, but I just wasn't ever able to do it.

I look at my skin closely in those moments and I'm like...WOW.

It could just be it's not my thing but there are other things in leviticus I've been super curious about doing only to not do them because they are there. May be a minority opinion but there you go.

It's not about following everything in the law for me...it's about doing my best to agree with the word. I fall short certainly and am not trying to live under the law anymore (in a save yourself fashion) but if it's spelled out for me I can't just not give it serious thought.

Tatoos are a trend....in the wrong direction.
No Christian parent would allow their kids to get tatoos.

if you have a bad tattoo on you, get skin colored tattoo to cover it (like there's no tattoo on it)

else, if you don't have any bad tattoo on you, don't get a new one



the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit

if you tattoo as scripture reminder, don't worry, because John 14:26 says "the advocate will remind you of all things", so no need of a tattoo

if you want, wear a cross necklace

and God designed the body, with every skin cell numbered, even the pigments and the color of it,

and keep in mind that the tattoo needle hurts, and I highly doubt that it's suffering for the right cause

This tabernacle will pass away! We will have a new body( praise Jesus) ! So it's not to your shame. Wear all our scars as badges as a life lived....even tatoos!

Well the motivation behind it is important. Doing it to fit in, be like the world?
For reasons of pride?
Or creativity or homage to God or a dead family member, or close friend?
That said, I'm not generally a big fan of them, though I certainly would not be critical of anyone, and some of them look great.
The main point to me is that anything we do that alters God original design is a step down. Be it processing food, revising nature, or delineating the body with ink.

If God created it, then it is good.

Scars are implications of life lived. Yet if we obey our Lord we have less scars, and a better life lived.

What about if it's to signify your faith or something? As a kind of symbol and reminder of your faith if you will.

I have an old tramp stamp on my left arm from when I was about 15 years old that I have forever regretted!

But I've never really been into tattoos that much (I like them, just more on other people than on me).

Besides, I've always believed that the body is a temple for the Holy Spirit and shouldn't be "defiled" or "marked" in any way.

But then that doesn't mean that I would be less of a Christian or lose my salvation because of it.

I was just thinking of getting something to cover up this ridiculous thing on my arm with something subtle like. Nothing majorly big anyway.

Would love to get people's feedback on this and hear what the majority has to say on the matter.

There is a story about two brothers who lived in a remote village in a rural country side. Life was hard for them being of a poor family. Often not having the food of the privileged they one night on a whim stole a sheep from a wealthy farm owner but were caught and punished by having ST branded on their foreheads so every one could see they were sheep thieves.
One brother couldn't stand the reproach and started to run from one place to another but always was confronted by the ST on his forehead. The other brother bowed his head and became a loyal faithful member of the community. As the years went by the brother on the run found no peace while the other served faithfully. One day a small child inquired of his mother why that old man has ST on his forehead. The mother thought for a moment and she said to her child 'I think it means Saint'.

When you take into consideration pre-incarnate Jesus Christ was the one that established the dietary laws with Adam (see Gen. 7:2) we must ask ourselves: why? Realizing He does not change (Heb. 13:8) we then see.

Wee Mii, it seems we do have NT references. We are told to abstain from blood in Acts 20 & 29. :cool:

The original and optimal dietary laws for humans was actually established in Genesis 1:29.
Anyone revision after that is a step down and was due to our change in either environment and/or lifestyle.

First off, I don't think God was telling us the be vegetarians. It (Gen. 1:29) was instructions on what kind of plants to eat. Clean meats were established already by Noah's day. We must assume it was among Adam's instructions as he was the only one instructed directly by God.

Second, eating the Passover lamb was not optional. Everyone among Israel had to eat of it. I think that shoots down those that think God wants us to be rabbits. The Israelis had to discard the fat and the blood but were told to eat other offerings. Don't forget the quails God gave them to eat. Think it all through. :unsure:

Do you agree that life in the garden of Eden hefore sin was Gods original design for us and the best lifestyle and diet for us regarding health and longevity?

Ok there's one I suppose. Those were things that stuck out to me probably 4+ years ago. I'll certainly think on it but as to the others?

Other than avoiding the appearance of evil and to be ignorant in the ways of evil verses...that could pretty much cover everything ;)

and also be taken much too far unfortunately.

Edit: I will do some thinking on it.

I was under the impression that the way that animals were killed via the "kosher method" removed most if not all the blood and anything else that would be left would be cooked out be default?

i had an unfinished tattoo before i became christian...after being born again...i did finish it since it was cheaper then removing it...honestly i felt i had grieved the holy spirit afterwards...for a few days...so i wouldnt recommend doing it..im sure if you pray and go to the bible God will speak to you and let you know his will...sometimes though we ignore Gods voice, and do it anyway perhaps to cover up a scar or ugly tattoo
