If you go with the definition, 'to use for a special purpose'...it just doesn't work that way. Rather God takes us and uses us for His purpose, which should really be considered a privilege. He sets the agenda.
We can and should prepare ourselves though...
2 Timothy 2:20-21 KJVS
[20] But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. [21] If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
We can and should prepare ourselves though...

How we appropriate grace - Thru FAITH!
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
(NOTE: God "GAVE" a fallen world his Son. Christ is God's grace/gift, we appropriate this gift/grace thru Faith)
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
(NOTE: Grace is a gift, appropriated thru Faith)
Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
(NOTE: We access/appropriate God's grace thru Faith)

For the record......grace is also a position that one is placed into and stands in after salvation........
In the grace you are, having been saved out of faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God and not of works lest any man should boast <----a more literal translation
and
We have also obtained access through him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

Where sin abounds, GRACE abounds the more <--written to believers
Grace is a position.....we are immersed into it at the moment of belief....

In this context appropriate would fall Into the category of us being blessed to be a blessing or grace for grace.
GOD uses obedient people to carry out needs that others have.
IE
You have been praying for something.
GOD tells someone that HE has already blessed to give you something and they give It.

Well he was simply misleading his audience.
Grace and peace have been extended to believers ever since they became saints. See the benedictions at the beginning of every epistle. This is not because we deserve them, but because God is infinitely gracious, and the merits of Christ are infinitely perfect. We are to simply believe God and what He says.
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called [to be] saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom 1:7)
Grace and peace have been extended to believers ever since they became saints. See the benedictions at the beginning of every epistle.
