The Harlot in Revelation that rides the beast Part 2.
To understand who she is John throughout chapters 17-18-19 describes the relationship she has with the dragon, beast and false prophet.
Who is this woman?
The first mention of her by name is in Rev 17:1. She is called the great prostitute who sits on many waters, however her official name is found in verse 5. She is called “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes, and of earth's abominations”.
The characteristics of this woman are:
Is described as being “drunk with the blood of the saints.” v 6.
She sits on the beast with 7 heads and ten horns.
In verse 10 she is described as sitting on the 7 heads of the beast which is 7 mountains and translated 7 kings by John.
So, she is sitting on 7 Kings. John goes on to explain in verse 17:10 that 5 of the Kings she is sitting on have already fallen or passed away and only 2 Kings remain. One is alive John explains in his lifetime and 1 is still to come.
So, to explain verse 9 and verse 10 properly the harlot woman who rides the beast has been riding the 5 kings already past, riding the king who is in Johns time and will ride the King after John’s King passes away (rides or sits on). This is quite a profound statement because this means that the harlot woman has been sitting on or riding the king and their kingdoms for many years before Johns time and now in Johns time and the time to come which is our time. She is described as a harlot drunk with the blood of the saints and living a life of filth and sexually immorality (17:4).
John goes on to explain the 10 horns that are on the best that the woman rides are 10 Kings that hand over their authority to the beast 17:12. The waters that the woman is seated on are described as nations, peoples and languages 17:15. She is also the great city that has dominion over all the earth.
So, lets just summarise what we have seen here.
She was around before Johns time and in Johns time sitting on 5 kings passed and sitting on the current king in Johns time and will sit on a future King in the future of Johns time.
She is described as a great city that has dominion over all the earth.
She has persecuted the saints
She is sexually immoral. She rides the beast.
She shares the beast with 10 kings and the beast that will eventually slay her and her rule.
I believe she is a demonic supernatural force who is a form of antichrist throughout the generations of the world, in Johns time and way before Johns time.
She according to John has governed 7 Kings or kingdoms and, in the end, times will be destroyed by the beast and his new antichrist-kingdom.
That means that throughout history certain kings and kingdoms that have ruled the earth and different ages and places will no longer be able to do so when the beast destroys the dominion of the harlot who seems to be a caretaker throughout the ages opposing God and his kingdom.
In Rev 18 she is described of as living a life of luxury (Rev 18:3)
What happens next seems to be a swift end her and she is slain by the beast and the kings so their rule reigns for a time. However, in Rev 19 the very next chapter the beast wages war with God army and is finally defeated by Jesus and his coming army and thrown into the hellfire for eternity along with the false prophet.
So, who is the harlot woman?
She is not the Apostate Church as some would believe ...at least not according to the scriptures. She is also not the Catholic church as some would believe.
She seems to be some sort of antichrist-spirit that has ruled over the world for eons and supported kings and kingdoms whether supernatural or natural.
The only thing that makes her stand out is that over the years many horrific atrocities have been done to Gods people in her care, maybe since the first prophet in the Bible was killed.
However, all the blood and guts and horror committed on her behalf will seem like a dwarfed version of persecution when the beast and the 10 kings come to rule the world. They will snuff out her rule and make he look like an ant in comparison. The good news is the worst of horror stories wont compare to the horror waiting for them and their annihilation when Jesus returns.
