In 1 Corinthians 15:3 (NIV) it says,

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

Is believing that Jesus paid for my sins by dying for them, that He rose from the dead, and that He is Lord enough to be saved? I'm trying to work through my salvation and have assurance I'm saved, please tell me anything else I should believe.

Also, is believing that Jesus paid for my sins by dying for them a sufficient understanding of how Jesus paid for my sins? Is there more to it? Do I need to know exactly how Jesus paid for my sins?

Carefully and prayerfully read through Romans and the gospel of John. If you want to be certain and strengthened the read Gods word.

Ps 119:9 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

This might seem like a silly or strange post, but when I submitted this thread I might not have been looking for assurance that I'm saved, I might have just been trying to work through my salvation. I wrote the OP for this thread yesterday and I might have been looking for assurance that I'm saved then, but when I submitted this thread, maybe not.

Hi LeeLoving, the evidence for our salvation isn't found in the exact way that we became Christians, in whether we did, said and/or even believed all the "right" things at that time (and/or did, said, and/or believed enough or well-enough, or enough of the right things, etc.), because people have come to know Jesus and been saved in any number of different ways. Salvation, therefore, is less about a certain formula that must be followed, or exact words that must be spoken, or a collection of precise things that must be believed, etc., and it's more about the understanding of our absolute need for Him as our Savior, our trust in Him to save us in the very way that He promised us that He would (by His mercy and by His grace through faith .. both in what Jesus did for us, as well in the Father's promise to save us on that basis alone), and the surrender of our lives to Him as our Lord, knowing that He loves us and therefore trusting Him to grow us up in Christlikeness, as well to see/guide us safely through this life to be with Him in the next.

For assurance, you'll need to look at your life, what it's like now, and particularly how it's changed, in general, since the day that you became a Christian. That is the principle way that we "test" or "examine" ourselves to see whether we are truly in the faith or not .. e.g. 2 Corinthians 13:5. Our lives, and the way we choose to live them, what we do, say, and even how we think, the things that we find important and make a priority, etc., are what tell us, demonstrate, validate, justify our claim of being a Christian .. or not (both to ourselves and to others).

Simply put, Christians tend to act like Christians, speak like Christians, and think like Christians, because we 'are' Christians. IOW, we act like Christians because it's natural for us to do so, because of the changes that God wrought in us when He gave us new hearts and new spirits, when He caused us to be born again, when He created us as wholly new creatures in Christ and made us His workmanship. And of course, because we are indwelt, taught and guided by the Holy Spirit, and have been given the mind of Christ.

So, if someone who claims to be a Christian continues in, or quickly returns to living the same kind of unrepentant, sinful lifestyle that they were leading before they made that claim, then their "claim" should be regarded as nothing more than that.

Do you love God and want a to have a relationship with Him because you do, or do you just want the blessings that He has to offer? Do you love His word? Do you love His people? Are you continuously thankful/grateful for all that He has done/continues to do for you, and for all that He has blessed you with? Do you still desire to do what pleases 'you' most of the time, or have your desires changed such that you now look for ways to please/honor/glorify Him 24/7 instead?

Do you sin in the same ways and with the same frequency that you did before you became a Christian? How do you feel when you sin? Are you saddened/grieved/horrified by it? Do you seek to turn from it and to be forgiven of it?

Is the principle reason that you came to Christ to be saved from God's wrath and an eternity in Hell, or is it because of your great desire to be forgiven and have the weight of your guilt removed, and because you wanted to stop sinning/stop leading a sinful lifestyle on 'this' side of eternity to please and glorify the One who did so much to save you, the One who loves you so, the One who you have come to love?

So (since we cannot see the heart like God can), it's our 'life' and how we live it (and how it has changed), what we do and say and think, that is the best indicator of who we are and what we are. Likewise, I believe that it's the things that "accompany" salvation, the "fruit" or the things that "result" from His changing and saving us that tell us if we are truly Christians .. or simply CINO.

~Deut
p.s. - please be aware that what I just said was said in a "general" way, not as some sort of list that needs to be fulfilled. More than anything else, our salvation is really about our knowing and trusting God, and about Him knowing us. It's about us having a personal "relationship" with Him and amazingly, Him choosing to have a personal relationship with us :) (it's not so much about our needing to do this or that specific thing).

Yes, you are saved according to the Gospel of Grace given to the Apostle Paul. Romans 10:9 should further reassure you

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

When looking for salvation it is a continual work as... in if Christ has begun it he will finish working in us with us to both will and do his good pleasure. (No murmuring) We are to work out that which he works in us like that of Rehab and Abraham . We have his confidence. (Philippians 1:6) He promises He will not forget the good works we do offer towards his name.

This is my testimony, for what it is worth; but the Scripture say... by the power of our testimony...

I got saved sitting in Patton's restraint on the westside of Columbus. OH. I was sitting with my family and they were talking about G-d. I was 18 and the man I was with since 13 was murdered in December, 1990, it was now February 1991.

Alexie, a beautiful Karenin Jew, and I went to a Baptist church back in July of 1990, with friends who invited us. The alter-call and he said to me he wanted to go down.... I looked at him like he was stupid, but said "okay". He got saved but I did not...

Anyway back in Patton's... I heard a voice, inside myself, "if you die tonight you will go to hell"... I had a fear come over me like I never had before or since... I know it was Y-shua and I begged Him to save me... right then and there...

I did not know anything really about Y-shua/Jesus so I did not believe I was saved and for months I cried myself to sleep please let me be saved... See I am a Jew so I did not know anything about Messiah; I was just thought He was a false god.

I decided if I am going to serve this "god"... The one true living G-d I need to know something about Him, so I went to Bible College and got a Masters. (I did not do nothing with it)…

I do not cry myself to sleep at night praying to be saved.... I could have saved thousands of $ and just read my Bible to know Him.... What I have learnt in almost 30 years with my Messiah has come by a relationship... talking to Him, reading His WORD!!!!

I WAS SAVED THAT NIGHT IN PATTON'S EVEN THOUGH I DID DON'T KNOW IT.... NOW I KNOW HIM AND KNOW I WILL NEVER NOT BE SAVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jesus dying on the cross for our sins is called the Atonement. I read. Leviticus a while back in my read daily read through the Bibie.. The first chapters lay out the foreshadowing of Jesus sacrificing himself for our sins. It really helped me understand the depth of what Christ did for us on the cross. You probably know more about Leviticus than I do!

I'm glad you had assurance you are saved. Write down your experience and memories. Then, when the devil attacks, you san reread what happened. You might want to compile some good Bible verses and memorize them for these difficult times. And pray a lot! I tend to turn away from God when I am down, when what Jesus wants is for us to run into his arms! God bless!

There are ways you can do a guy check to see if you have received Salvation.
Here are three examples:

1) Matthew13-44-46. Do you feel like this now or have you ever felt like this in the past?
2) John 15:26-27. Have you given witness to the truth?
3) 2Timothy 4:1-2. Have you preached or shared the Word to others? Or have you at least explored for ways and on how to share the Word and the truth with others?

I don't know about that, I might not be saved.
If you gave your sins to the Savior for Jesus to pay for them for you, then you can absolutely trust the Lord to do as He says. You still have to accept the natural consequences of your sin and pay for them in this world, but your sins now do not bring on the spiritual death you were under, it is as if you never sinned. Now, you are asked to live on with Christ within you. You give over your will to Christ, so when your flesh leads you to sin your will leads you to live in harmony with Christ.

Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

It is a beautiful free joy filled walk you have chosen. Do feed your spirit with His words of scripture, truth and hope and rebuke the words that come from the evil one filled with sin, doubt, and distrust.

Hello everyone, I'm a new member and would like to say something about salvation, while having a bit of warmheartedness ... so please forgive my grammar.

We all know they asked the million dollar question in the book of Acts chapter 2...

Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
[38] Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Notice what happened here, at first many were mocking them...

Acts 2:13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

But after hearing about Jesus they asked, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"

Note Peter did NOT say, "Well you were unbelieving and mocking, but now you believe and are sincere, therefore you need NOT DO ANYTHING, go in peace because you are now saved."

Peter told them to DO (obey) the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the Death, Burial, and Resurrection...

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them,
1. Repent --- Death
2. Baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ "for the remission of sins" --- Burial
3. , and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. --- Resurrection

And, this is one of the few times all the apostles were gathered together, not any of them said, "Well there you go again Peter ole boy, they only need to believe, therefore they should all go in peace because they are now saved."

-Thanks again.

So are you inferring that baptism is necessary for salvation? If so, kindly read and study Acts 10, which also involves Peter. The Gentiles received the Holy Ghost FIRST (salvation) and then they were baptized. The go to Acts 16 and see the same thing.

We should not assume that because Acts is historical it has no doctrinal value. Quite the opposite.

i said it wrong i think. i just mean that acts is more like chronicles, its a historical book. but like a theological work would be the book of romans
