this is not true if it were Jesus couldnt of died for anyone's sins and would be just like everybody else.
What you are MISSING and which leads to your error is the following....
SIN in a believer is directed at FELLOWSHIP, NOT LOSING SALVATION......and the IF john uses is used to state....IF WE SAY WE HAVE no sin........get over it.....even the most righteous of the bible confessed sins and or sinned.....that does not equate to one losing their position as a SON or DAUGHTER..........wake up pal.....no one is promoting sin and or saying we can live a life of sin........but for sure ALL believers SIN.........NO ONE goes 24/7/365 without sin........there has been only ONE....JESUS and exactly why when his righteousness is imputed BY FAITH and our LIFE hid within CHRIST we are ETERNALLY saved, sealed, justified and sanctified POSITIONALLY while having EVERY SIN we will ever COMMIT nailed to the CROSS in CHRIST.......
MAKE no mistake...You are not right in your view......regardless of your inability to acknowledge the truth.

I see it as relevant, John is speaking to believers, yes and he is addressing the false teachings that had entered the congregation.
Mr. Barnes is not giving a good view of the scripture imho..
This is not seeing if our confession is false, a born again believers knows they are born again.
John addresses the dual nature of the believer, sin cannot abide in the "seed of Him" therefore when a person sins it is their flesh not the regenerated part of them, sin cannot be part of the regenerate life as the Gnostics maintained
Paul asserts the same
Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

People confusing soul life salvation with spiritual eternal salvation over and over again ...then they preach salvation can be lost or needs to be maintained because they have failed to make that essential distinction. 
AMEN.....the true conflict in every believer......the spirit wanting to always do what is right and the flesh 100% contrary to the truth....the latter being subject to the ongoing process of sanctification in our daily life which is subject to successes and or failure....through the process of transformation as described in Romans 12:1-2 we can walk in a manner that pleases GOD even though at times we fail and fall short.....
You have been peddling for days the loss of salvation because of sin.....and falsely accusing us of saying we can sin, or having no concept of sin etc.........so.....now you want to twist again and say I never implied that.....dude....you vacillate more than the waves on Bondi Beach............
Jesus had sinful nature (fallen human nature, i.e. man's human nature after the fall) but since he never sinned he never had the propensities of sin which come from actual sinning, which we all developed. Jesus didn't sin in fallen human nature because he was also born of the spirit (the love of God implanted). The bible is showing us in so many ways that the born again need not sin. The cross from the foundation of the world allows man the choice to stay in Adam's race or be in Christ's race. The born again is in Christ's race and does not do the works of Adam's race. Really not to hard to understand if you believe what scripture says.
I think dragging the issue of an unrepented sin over to Gnosticism is Overgandy, it's merely speculation that John was speaking towards Gnosticism.
You can not have a sinful nature and be without sin...Jesus did not have a sinful nature...

I would suggest it is just us being alone and isolated from God.
In ourselves we will always gravitate towards getting hurt, defensive and then attacking others
for selfish reasons.
Jesus was equally born like we are. Except being God, He was His own reference point for the
ultimate good, love, truth, caring, referring everything to the ultimate eternal source of all things.
So in a sense He did not have a sinful nature, isolation from himself, as that is impossible, but
He experienced everything like we do.
So in one aspect I am not speaking the truth and in another I am.
I hope you can see the difference.
My point to back this up is John the Baptist, the only human born with the Holy Spirit. He did not
have original sin, because he was born in communion with God, and did not choose to be saved.
Again this demonstrates where original sin comes from and why John is below any believer who
comes to Christ.
He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

And whose SUCCESS and whose FAILURE is sanctification subject to? At conversion I thought the flesh is crucified with Christ. We CAN? walk in a manner that pleases god? I guess I just read Romans 8:1 & 2, Romans 12: 1 & 2, Ephesians 4:13, 1 John 4:17, and dozens and dozens of verses too literally, forgetting that overcoming is a pretend thing like OSAS.

The question you asked me was answered well by another member.
We are saved by faith, which cleanses and purifies our heart which is shown in our behaviour.
Maybe that answers your question. These are new connections for me to make, and ways of
expressing existing concepts, so I am discovering coherent ways of putting the concepts together.
