Deu 4:12-16.....You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form; you only heard a voice......Take careful heed to yourselves, for you saw no form when the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, lest you act corruptly and make for yourselves a carved image in the form of any figure.....

Chapter 4 starts out with the words...

"Hear now, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances I am teaching you to follow so that you may live, enter, and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you."

… so, unless my grandmother was "you" (in this verse), her owl-shaped lamp was probably not grievous to God. ;) [note: she wasn't the "you," here, in this context]

The cross is not a graven image of God, for He is saying they saw no form of Him, so they should not make a graven image to represent Him and worship it, for the graven image is certainly not God's image neither is it Him.

The heathen had graven images to represent their God in visible form, but God said do not do that for you do not know what He looks like, and a graven image is not Him.

The cross is not an image of God, but what Jesus was on to give us salvation.

But should a person wear a cross, and if they do should they have a cross without Jesus on it, for He is no longer on the cross, and if they have Jesus on it is that a misrepresentation of Him for He does not look like that.

Should they have a picture of Jesus even though they do not worship it, for that picture they have is not Jesus for He does not look like that, and they do not know what He looks like, so is it wrong to misrepresent Jesus by a picture that is not Him.

I think we should not have any images at all, but in the Old Testament they had images of things, but not of God.

If you think mentally of the cross, and believe what Jesus did, what good is an image of the cross unless you want to show your faith, and belief, to other people as many do by a necklace of a cross, or to show their love to God because of the cross.

IMO, I think what’s interesting about the modern image of the cross, it’s showing really two things in one.

First the cross was a T post, the average crucifix in Roman times was just that, when Jesus was place on the crucifix

Second what mades the cross, the posted sign Pilate had nailed to the back of the T post, and the words visible for all to see and read. that wasn’t the norm when people got sentenced to the crucifix.

What about the empty tomb? It seems to me that it would be a better representative of the Christian belief.

Though I think the way a person speaks and acts should be what counts.

the folded garments in the tomb was a representation of something as well.

Jesus had to leave them with sorrow because if he didn’t leave the Holy Spirit person would not be able to come.

While we do preach the gospel of His death, burial, AND resurrection (imperative to not leave off His "resurrection," per 1Cor15:1-2,11-17), there's also the following verse to consider:

1 Corinthians 11:26 [blb] -

"For as often as you may eat this bread and may drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He should come."

Do you believe this verse is to/for/about "the Church which is His body" (us)? IOW, that WE are to do this (still)? I do.

Why would this passage refer to the Cross when it is about making idols?

Paul said, "That if he was going to glory in anything, he would glory in the cross of Christ"

New American Standard Bible
But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

King James Bible
But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

It was talking about idols for example the golden calf. Which was in the likeness of a beast.
A cross isnt in the likeness of anything, its simply a cross. If there is a figure on the cross then maybe. I know some churches like RCC have likenesses of Jesus cruficifed on a cross. All others just have an empty cross because Jesus did not stay there, and this reminds us of his sacrifice and resurrection.

moses had people look at a serpent on bronze staff and they were healed but when people started worshipping the bronze serpent itself he got it destroyed. It was because of idolatry. GOd wants us to worship Him, the Creator, not creation.
