but if you believe He was subject to natural law and these things were clever manipulations of matter, not sovereign power over all that exists, haven't you stripped Him of His deity and called Him a magician rather than a miracle worker?

BTW, I have always thought that the miracle of the calming of the storm was the most remarkable other than resurrections or healings. All for the benefit of the disciples. Its good to be a disciple, a real one.

do you think it's because He has great command of physics, as though subject to nature and unable to break natural law or because He is the one whose word is law, demonstrating authority over creation itself?

Ineffable inscrutable mastery over all creation. And law as well.
Oh yes, Lordship and mastery over the spiritual realm as well. The domain of hell also.

you were saying His miracles sounded like whatever unconventional physics it is you believe in.
which sounds to me as though you thought the things He did somehow corroborate your view of nature. if His powerful works in some way provide evidence of a certain physics, the implication is that He was working under a law greater than His own authority - i.e. subservient to natural law - such that He wasn't actually performing miracles, which by definition defy natural explanation, being instead supernatural. if supernatural then He demonstrates authority over the creation. if limited by natural law ((as suggested by the idea that the works corroborate some deterministic physics)) then He is demonstrating by the works that He is beneath such principles, not greater than them.
