How does Jesus get lost in the church? How did Jesus get lost as a twelve year old boy?

Luke 2:42-43,

42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

He was missing for three days. When they do find Jesus he does something very profound.
Mary calls Joseph his father, Jesus says no I'm about my father's business, Luke 2:48

behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

What seems strange to me is Mary knew all that had happened to her, the visitation from the angel and how she would bring forth a savior, the Son of God, Luke 1:35

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Can you image Mary being a fourteen year old and having that kind of experience.
Now, twelve years later she has almost forgotten all that was told her. I wonder if her religion had got in the way of what she knew to be from God, even to the point of making Jesus just another one of her son's. She had known the HolySpirit came upon her and she was chosen by God to bring forth a savior of his people.
Have you ever thought about religion and preconceived ideas, keeping you from the deep things of God.
Jesus own family was offended by him, Mark 6:3

3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

We move on in God, there comes a time when every believer has to move on or stay exactly where you are spiritually.
Another strange detail about our humanity is; we think what we know and understand is all there is to know and understand.
I personally believe it is because our understanding comes from the HolySpirit and we will not turn loose of it no matter what.
We hold on even when the HolySpirit is leading you into a deeper depth in the knowledge of the Father.
Most will at this point go through the schoolhouse of religion before they can turn loose, or yield.
So confusion and lack of understanding is not a bad thing, if you are willing to be lead by the HolySpirit.
Don't think it a strange thing for life to challenge you. Some are afraid to let go, some feel they will be lost and have to hold on to their doctrine.
What you believe is a comfort to you, God gave you the understanding you have, but we are dealing with the mind of Christ.
The wisdom of God, you cannot put a limitation on God.
He is going to do what is best for you anyway so you might as well let go, turn loose and get free from ideas. The deep things of God will be discerned in the spirit, not by what you think.
Just as Mary could not find Jesus because he was lost.
When she found Jesus he was in the temple.
Jesus can be found in the temple, your temple, if you are looking anyplace else you will be disappointed.
In the case of the born again, it will be a revelation, Christ revealed in you, to you, as your only life.
Word to the wise; it does not come in a package you are looking for. It comes in the form of a person, Christ in you the hope of glory.

Jesus was never lost as a 12 year old in church as He knew exactly where He was and that was in His father's house. It was His parents that lost track of him and not the other way around. Even so, He still understood their concern as His parents.

I agree with tourist, Jesus wasn’t lost but his mother and father was with quite a few people a caravan per say and surely was talking and traveling home not really having their eyes on him but that didn’t make them bad parents or anything. Joseph took Mary as his wife and the responsibility of caring for her and caring for Jesus keeping them safe from harm, clothed, fed, a roof over their heads, joseph taught Jesus a trade a carpenter he loved them both as a father and a husband.

Joseph earned that title of being called his father not because he was Jesus biological father but As a person who cares for another as a father might and Mary honored that aspect, a man who cared for her and her child as a true father and husband would do.

You wrote an outstanding post on parental responsibility. I am sure that Jesus loved Joseph as his dad. It is fitting also that joseph taught Jesus the trade of carpentry because Jesus loves to build stuff such as the universe.

Excellent point, no doubt in my mind Jesus loved Joseph as a son would love a father and keeped those things in his heart as well.
