Why Did God Turn His Back On Jesus?

  • He couldn't stand seeing Jesus nailed to the cross

  • He didn't see Jesus as his son anymore

  • He couldn't stand to look at the sin of the world upon Jesus

  • He didn't want to hear Jesus in pain

He did not.

Christ is God and He cannot forsake Himself.

Jesus cried out the first bar of a Psalm called 'the hind of the morning'
the hind is Israel. in the song, Israel, in unbelief, thinks it has been forsaken, but it has not.
He is describing what is happening all around Him, the fulfilling of prophecy even as He speaks it.
He's not full of unbelief on the cross. He is the everlasting Father, the Mighty God on the cross, in full control of the entire universe, living in the form of a completely sinless ((i.e. no doubt or unbelief, ever)) man.

i believe your presumption that God turned His back on Himself is false -- though extraordinarily common -- and is predicated on a very low view of the person of Jesus. so i don't even feel comfortable clicking 'other' because of how doing so partially legitimizes your question, but i did anyway because the truth as i understand it is something really, really, very, extremely other.
This topic is touchy and I know a lot of differing beliefs come from this deep teaching. Jesus was 100% man and 100% God, most, if not all, agree on this. Yet, we can read of three times in Matthew 26 that Jesus prayed for 'this cup' to pass by Him if it were the Father's will, yet He fully submitted to His Father's will and drank this most bitter cup. Now, what was in 'this cup'? We can read in Psalm 75...

For a cup is in the hand of the Lord, and the wine foams;
It is well mixed, and He pours out of this;
Surely all the wicked of the earth must drain and drink down its dregs.(vs 8 NASB)

The 'this cup' was the cup of His Father's wrath as Jesus became sin when He was imputed the sins of His people. In 2 Cor. 5 it is written...

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.(2 Cor. 5:21 NIV) Jesus became the very embodiment of sin when He took the sins upon His people upon Himself. He stood before the Father as a man guilty of breaking the Law, yet He never committed one sin. God then had to withdraw Himself from His own Son as He paid for the sins of His people.

And this is not a very low view of Jesus, either, but rather, a very high view of God. God, in His holiness, righteousness, justice, can not let sin go unpunished. When His very own Son stood before Him, He did not spare Him one smite, but fully poured out His wrath upon Him. I take comfort in knowing this, that God would not go easier on sin, even when His own Son was paying for it on our behalf. As Paul so poignantly wrote "who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?"(Romans 8:32)

I will close with this beautiful writing from John Flavel...

The Father’s Bargain with the Son

by John Flavel

Father: My son, here is a company of poor miserable souls, that have utterly undone themselves, and now lie open to my justice! Justice demands satisfaction for them, or will satisfy itself in the eternal ruin of them: What shall be done for these souls?

Son: O my Father, such is my love to, and pity for them, that rather than they shall perish eternally, I will be responsible for them as their Surety; bring in all thy bills, that I may see what they owe thee; Lord, bring them all in, that there may be no after-reckonings with them; at my hand shalt thou require it. I will rather choose to suffer thy wrath than they should suffer it: upon me, my Father, upon me be all their debt.

Father: But, my Son, if thou undertake for them, thou must reckon to pay the last mite, expect no abatements; if I spare them, I will not spare thee.

Son: Content, Father, let it be so; charge it all upon me, I am able to discharge it: and though it prove a kind of undoing to me, though it impoverish all my riches, empty all my treasures, (for so indeed it did, 2 Cor. 8: 9. “Though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor”) yet I am content to undertake it.

Flavel: Blush, ungrateful believers, O let shame cover your faces; judge in yourselves now, has Christ deserved that you should stand with him for trifles, that you should shrink at a few petty difficulties, and complain, this is hard, and that is harsh? O if you knew the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ in this his wonderful condescension for you, you could not do it.

I feel like bawling when I read that.

When Jesus called out He was quoting the OT passage .. Psalm 22.. It foretold of the execution of the Messiah.. Those who where witnessing the death of Jesus in the crowd and who knew their scriptures would have made the link and the link would have lead them to read Psalms 22..

Psalms 22:1 "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? {2} O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. {3} But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. {4} Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. {5} They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. {6} But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. {7} All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, {8} He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. {9} But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts. {10} I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly. {11} Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. {12} Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. {13} They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. {14} I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. {15} My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. {16} For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. {17} I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. {18} They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. {19} But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. {20} Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. {21} Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. {22} I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. {23} Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. {24} For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. {25} My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. {26} The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. {27} All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. {28} For the kingdom is the LORD’S: and he is the governor among the nations. {29} All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. {30} A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. {31} They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this."

what does verse 24 say?
does it jive with the common view expressed here?

A Prophetic word unto you.. Yahoveh never turned his back on his Son YAHOSHUA. YAHOSHUA was quoting DAVID song, in Psalms that he had written a thousand years before YAHOSHUA, ever walked the face of the EARTH, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures.. Psalms 22:1
(To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.) My Father, my Father, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

YAHOSHUA, never called His FATHER by a Title of GOD. For Our CREATOR is called "ABBA", and not GOD, have you not read, saith YAHOSHUA, who is Christ unto the GENTILE NATIONS/NATIONALITIES of the WORLD, called MANKIND, and unto the JEWS, I AM, MESSIAH, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures....
Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons, the FATHER hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “ABBA", Father. Mark 14:36 And he said, “ABBA", Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. Roman 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, “ABBA", Father.

For there is ONLY ONE "GOD" in this WORLD, and his name is SATAN. It is SATAN who have been STANDING BEHIND the Title of GOD, in whom this WORLD this WORLD have been DECEIVED into WORSHIPING. Paul was trying to warn you about this. When he said that My FATHER DID NOT DWELL IN YOUR TEMPLES/Churches, that was made by man's hands, saith YAHOSHUA, who is Christ unto the GENTILE NATIONS, and unto the JEWS, I AM, MESSIAH, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures. Acts 17:22-24
Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands. 2 Corinthians 4:4 IN WHOM THE "GOD" OF THIS "WORLD" HATH BLINDED THE MINDS OF THEM WHICH BELIEVE NOT, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of the FATHER should shine unto them.

Shalom

Yeah. Because doubting is debating whether something is true or not, they you may still have assumptions but you're not 100% sure what you should of would want to believe in. Therefore it cannot be belief if you don't fully believe in it. It still has its unbelief.

Forsake Him ( momentarily ) that He might fulfill the will of God and provide the planned redemption and reconciliation.

At least Jesus knew it was only temporary:
Jn 10: 18 "No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have the power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father."

He had to treat him as sin. Thats why
I wouldn't put it that way. It's that he had to treat sin with what it deserves. He unleashed all his wrath from his anger and hate of sin with a worthy punishment that sin deserves. To treat someone as sin, that makes me think you sin to sin against someone, such as you steal their stuff or murder them. I don't know if that's what you mean, but he isn't unleashing sin upon sin, he is unleashing his justified wrath as a punishment.

Actually, god turning his back on Jesus raises the glory to Jesus MUCH greater! What you are saying isn't very glorifying. It appears you don't even understand HOW Jesus took our sins. God's wrath was placed upon Jesus for our sins, you think God is going to be a part of that? It wasn't the Father who was crucified, it wasn't Father and Son, it was ONLY the only begotten son of the Father who was crucified and took our punishment. Therefor, if he even took such a thing that even his own holy Father won't be a part of and set his eyes on, then it goes to show what our savior was willing to go through to save us! Jesus became the sin, bared our sin and took the wrath. The nails, bleeding and being on the cross wasn't how he paid our debt, but he did as God placed our sins upon him spiritually then once the wrath was over, so was his physical time to live.

What you sound like with your explanation, is you are calling Jesus a liar. I'm sure you don't view it that way. But I am sure if he is calling out to his Lord while taking our sins, I'm sure he literally means what he said. Perhaps that Psalms verse was a symbol of his crucifixion to come. Maybe.
The problem with your assertion is Jesus stated "I and the Father are one."

John 10 AMPC
24 So the Jews surrounded Him and began asking Him, How long are You going to keep us in doubt and suspense? If You are really the Christ (the Messiah), tell us so plainly and openly.
25 Jesus answered them, I have told you so, yet you do not believe Me [you do not trust Me and rely on Me]. The very works that I do by the power of My Father and in My Father’s name bear witness concerning Me [they are My credentials and evidence in support of Me].
26 But you do not believe and trust and rely on Me because you do not belong to My fold [you are no sheep of Mine].
27 The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me.
28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never lose it or perish throughout the ages. [To all eternity they shall never by any means be destroyed.] And no one is able to snatch them out of My hand.
29 My Father, Who has given them to Me, is greater and mightier than all [else]; and no one is able to snatch [them] out of the Father’s hand.
30 I and the Father are One.

You are saying he's trying to fulfill the scriptures of the Old Testament just in that one specific part. But I don't see what you are saying that says why he chose to only fulfill that scripture and what was the purpose in the meaning of him even saying that at all? You know many things in the Old Testament where said but they were things that were to be fulfilled in the New Testament. Even some of those old things in the Old Testament still have not been fulfilled but Sunday will. Jesus could have fulfilled other ones if simply all he has to do is say the words. Because when he said it he didn't do anything physical. So why did he say my God my God why have you forsaken me? What did that fulfill? Are you saying the Old Testament verse was just useless until Jesus would say it himself? Or is it actually meaning something at the moment?

and again you don't seem to understand the Trinity. That they are three beings as one and yet at the same time they are three individuals. Why else would Jesus need to say father and son all the time as if he's referring to two different people? Wouldn't he just say I am and so is me. Instead of saying I am the son and he is the father? Or something like that because he would keep calling himself who he is himself, instead of referring to somebody else as a father. He wouldn't say he's going to go pray to somebody else, if he was exactly 100% as God and Only God and not individual she would say that I'm going to go pray to myself. He would not tell us to pray to the father he would tell us to pray to him and only him and not the father. But you see there is something about them that makes them also individuals and there's something about them that also makes them one. Jesus is not the father he is the son of the father. if he was exactly God he would not be at the right hand of God but he would be where God is Exactly.

Mark 16;19
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

if God and Jesus were 100% the same person and not individuals as well, they wouldn't keep using words that are plural to refer to themselves they would only use singular. Keep in mind this verse when they refer to calling themselves "us."

Genesis 1;26
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

humans were not even made then, So who was God talking to? If Only God was there was he talking to an angel telling the angels that they are going to make man together or was he talkin to the animals of the earth saying the animals and God would create mankind? or was God talking to somebody else next to him and saying they were going to make mankind in their image? Shirley if only They were going to make mankind as one image like themselves, and God was saying like us, then that has to be Jesus Christ he was talking to you and he wasn't talking to himself or else he said I'm going to make Mankind in my image.

if Jesus and God were only one and one only, they would refer to themselves in a singular way not plural. but they let you know that they're holiness and their love and other things about them are one hundred percent the same and they have a connection as if they are the same, but they are two separate beings as well as father and son, but let's never leave out the holy spirit being a part of the Lord either.

A Prophetic word unto you. When the FATHER was saying LET US MAKE MAN.. in our IMAGE, meaning SPIRIT. For we are CELESTIAL BEING, male in gender, for the FATHER never CREATED a FEMALE SPIRIT being in the spirit realm, because He did not need a WOMB. For we are not giving and taking in marriage, in the spirit realm, for we are as ANGELS, saith YAHOSHUA, we are called SONS of Abba, which means FATHER, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures.. Matthew 22:29-30 YAHOSHUA answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of the FATHER. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of the FATHER in heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

We are spirit beings that are Billions of years old, that was PUT INTO THESE MALE and FEMALE flesh bodies only to be able to come unto this SECOND EARTH AGE to be TESTED, have you not READ? Saith YAHOSHUA, who is the Christ unto YOU, who are of the GENTILE NATIONS/NATIONALITIES of the WORLD, called MANKIND, and unto the JEWS, I AM, MESSIAH, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures...YOSHUA/Joshua 24"13-15 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat. Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

These FLESH BODIES, PROFIT NOTHING TO THE FATHER. It is our SPIRIT man whose name is ADAM, that the FATHER is ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT, have you not READ? Fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures. John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

This is why we will all be CHANGED, not to go anywhere, because YAHOSHUA is COMING UNTO US. But we have to be changed to be able to see our TRUE SAVIOR, for he is never coming unto us as a HUMAN as He has done to our ANCESTORS before us. When He comes to us. He is coming in his "GLORY" which means His SPIRIT BODY. For flesh and BLOOD will never enter the KINGDOM of HEAVEN, nor will it EVER KNEEL or STAND, in the presence of our TRUE SAVIOR, saith YAHOSHUA, have you not READ? Fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:50-52Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of the FATHER; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall ALL BE CHANGED, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

We shall ALL, not some, but ALL SHALL BE CHANGED, for no one is being left anywhere. For Heaven is coming to this EARTH, same EARTH, just ANOTHER EARTH AGE, which is the LAST ONE. which is called HEAVEN ON EARTH, as in was in the BEGINNING, so shall it be AGAIN. ONCE, YAHOSHUA CLEANS IT UP, and brings it back to how it was in the BEGINNING, BILLIONS OF YEAR AGO.

Shalom

No offense man but you're all over the place. Some of the stuff you're even saying doesn't disagree with what I said. God made man spiritual and physical.
You know the part that you're quoting that God said let us make man in our image, God was in the process of seven days creating everything physical of this universe. He was making the Sun and the Moon and the animals and the water and the land and human beings. Are you saying that he wasn't making man physical but he was only making being spiritual and yet he was focusing on everything else being physical?

For when we had sinned our Spirits became of death and our bodies begin to lead a path to death. if we had never sinned as Adam did, then our Spirits would be alive and our bodies would never die. What is it that I have said that you're trying to disagree with?

and when you capitalize your words saying all will be changed, and you say no one will be left anywhere, Are you claiming that non-believers will not be left here on Earth or in hell but everyone will be changed and be saved and be kind of part of the kingdom of God? because if that's what you were saying that is blasphemy.
the Lord is not going to save everyone and in fact he is not going to save even half the Earth and all the humans that have ever existed. God has chosen people he will save and those he has not chosen will not be saved. if somehow I have misunderstood you please clarify what you were trying to say

A PROPHETIC ANSWER for CONFIRMATION.... The FATHER NEVER TURNED his back on his SON, NEVER did He do that. YAHOSHUA was QUOTING a SONG that DAVID WROTE, over a THOUSAND YEARS, before YAHOSHUA even walked the face of the EARTH, and this is what YAHOSHUA was SAYING to those who were listening to him. Even have a someone to say... TRULY THIS WAS the SON, of the FATHER. For no man would have known this, but YAHOSHUA, have you not READ? Fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures... Psalms 22: 1 (To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.) My FATHER, my FATHER, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

It was the song of DAVID that YAHOSHUA was QUOTING while he was on that TREE/Cross, which David wrote, even down to the gambling of YAHOSHUA'S CLOTHES, have you not READ? Fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures. Psalms 22: 18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. Psalms 22: A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

My FATHER NEVER TURNED HIS BACK ON HIS SON, just like He would never turn his back on us.
This is why He sent his only SON YAHOSHUA, so through him we could be SAVED, have you not REA? Fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures.. John 10:1-5
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

For they never called the FATHER by the title of GOD. This was ADDED to the FATHER Scriptures, just as JESUS/YESHUA was, when YAHOSHUA LEFT THIS WORLD AGE, which is also when your FREE WILL TEST had BEGUN, fulfilling the FATHER Scriptures.. YOSHUA/Joshua 24:14-15 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

May you all read this from a very famous preacher from the 1800s, known as "the Prince of Preachers," in what he understood this subject to be why Jesus said "my god, my god, why have you forsaken me" on the cross. Because I agree with him. And most poll results today do as well.
