umm - don't have intercourse (with another living being)...
Have faith, work hard, and cold showers... lol
I find that keeping the brain busy elsewhere, excretion from activity and sleep deprivation are helpful...
and lots of prayers for his strength for will-power...
and if your alone - makes it easier of course...
Or unliving ones either, lol.

Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience,
Colossians 3:5‭-‬6 NASB

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19‭-‬20 NASB

We know God designed us to reproduce and gave us the gift of enjoying such things. When it is done outside of His will and design, however, it beomes toxic, unholy, sexually immoral, perverted, and corrupt.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
Genesis 2:24 NASB

It is not always easy, down right near impossible, it seems. Like a lot have already said, though, living with intention and direction, committed to our resolutions to line up all areas of our lives with what we know are His ways, He will help us, making us even stronger, through His perfected strength, in our weakness. The world is filled with temptation, huh? Our bodies and minds need to remain focused on things not of this world, if we hope to remain unspotted by it.

Need a knife? lol

Seriously though, I am not sure if you just mean abstinence in a single sense, marriage sense, or temptation sense. Context would be needed. If you're speaking of single (and ready to mingle, haha) I would say that God tells us to approach the throne of grace in time of need (as the temptation presents itself). Enter the throne room, pray, and ask for the grace and mercy to resist. God will give you the escape. In this respect, you have to want sanctification and liberty, to actually desire deliverance.

Good answer, sex is a strong temptation and it needs Gods Holy Spirit to help overcome each temptation as it comes

Okay guys, thanks for your advice.

If you're single with a bf or gf, then refrain from touching.

If you're married, then you must pray and fast.

Pray to fight the temptations of the flesh and keep yourself busy until you're exhausted.

If you're married, then you must pray and fast.
the Bible actually says it's not right from you to withhold this from your spouse except by mutual consent for a set time for fasting and prayer. 1 Cor. 7:3-5

if you're married and just want to to abstain from sex altogether - not just because you want to fast for a week or something - then you're sinning against your spouse. your body doesn't belong to you.

similarly, the reason scripture gives that it is better to remain unmarried ((if the Lord has given you the gift of being able to do so)) is that a married man has much of his mind and his time consumed with thoughts of his wife, how he may please her. 1 Cor. 7:32-34
he is not free to devote himself to God, to prayer and service to God's purpose. vis-a-vis the wife, her husband. you are supposed to be devoting a lot of your life to your spouse, not ignoring him or her -- doing so is not serving God, according to scripture.

see, if you are married, it is your duty before God to devote much of your energy and time to your spouse. including that you should not abstain from affection, because then you tempt both yourself and your spouse to sin and frankly you bring a whole lot of unnecessary anxiety and speculative jealousy into the mind of your spouse, particularly if you don't mutually discuss and agree. and even if you do - which is why 1 Cor 7:3-5 says for a time not for the rest of your lives if you both agree to devote yourselves during that time to God.

in short, you're married? then abstinence in general is not your concern, not Biblically.

If you're married, then you must pray and fast.
You are misunderstanding that Scripture which means the opposite of what you imagine.

Start at Genesis 1:27,28 and get a PROPER BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
