Christ was buried in the late afternoon. He was in the tomb for 3 nights and 3 days. The tomb was empty Sunday. That means he rose Saturday late afternoon at the latest. Why do people assume he rose on Sunday when the Gospels never say that.
It does inform us of the first day of the week.

I go to my local Wal-Mart store. I buy Wal-Mart made products. I pay for them at Wal-Mart,

but, what I am really doing is supporting Target.

does that make any sense?

if your answer is no, then neither is this silly accusation that those of us who go to church on sun. ( the first day of the week, when Christ rose ), and sing songs about Jesus, talk about Jesus, watch folks put their faith in Jesus, etc.. that somehow that is really worshiping a pagan god.

sorry, I think I am going to keep my brain turned to the "on" position.
Your Jesus does not fit the scriptural description of the real Jesus, your Jesus is an idol made up of man's ideas. You need to go to scripture to learn who God and Jesus is, and learn their characteristics.

Here's something for you all who are determining who is higher on the totem pole in the kingdom of God (determined by when you "worship" God obviously):

It is probable that "3 days and 3 nights" was a Jewish idiom. It wasn't to be taken so literally as to account for every nanosecond as to interpretation.

I would suggest he was in the heart of the earth, a place where ones suffers a living sacrifice as the pangs of hell. The work of suffering unto death by giving ones spirit life for another began in the garden of gethsemane on Thursday when Christ suffering the pangs of hell sweat to show he was working suffering as if he was shedding literal blood in the parable

The scripture does not say 3 days in the tomb but rather he came out of the tomb on the third day. He was put in the tomb in the 2nd day.

Heart of the earth must have the same spiritual significance as the belly of hell, a living sacrifice...... our God pouring out his Spirit not seen on corrupted flesh .
Jesus stated when asked about the sign of him being the Messiah was the sign of Jonah. As Jonah was in the belly of the big fish so the son of man will be in the tomb for 3 nights and 3 days. He prophecied it and did it. The Gospels give the timeline of his Crucifixion burial and resurrection. 3 nights and 3 days.

He was put in the tomb the afternoon just before the Sabbath day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The last day of the Passover week. The tomb was empty Sunday. Using his prophecy the Passover Sabbath was Thursday thus buried Wednesday late afternoon at the latest.

Too many people seem to not understand there are annual Sabbaths in addition to the weekly Sabbath. Passover week starts and ends with annual Sabbaths.

You ignore what the Bible says about Jesus talking about his Crucifixion burial and resurrection. It definitely was not an idiom. It was the only sign proving him to be the Messiah. That takes it way out of being an idiom!!!

Over and again you pretend people say things they never said. Not one word of mine suggested your outright lie above. You're way out of control with your false accusations. But I'm learning that's just who you are unfortunately.

Ya think????? Nowhere in that did I deny a literal death, burial or resurrection as your outright lie suggested. You need to watch your tongue with your false accusations.

What you were suggesting flies in the face of Jesus stating the only sign of him being the Messiah was the sign of Jonah.

Your statement.

Bible with the statement of Jesus.
Matthew 12 NIV
The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

You just don't comprehend things then go on a tangent. Nowhere did I deny a thing. I'm fully aware of the Scripture, thanks, and that you bare false witness.

Now I recall why you were on ignore. You don't take the time to understand you just start bashing others and aren't afraid to lie. Shameful of you.

For the record since endoscopy wants to continue his lie campaign against me and my faith in the Gospel; 1 Corinthians 15 I am making this response here and now.

3 days and three nights was possibly a Jewish idiom or figure of speech, not an exact to the minute time frame. Like 40 days, or 1000 in Scripture, the Jewish culture implemented these figures of speech.

Nowhere did I deny my LORD's literal death, burial and resurrection as endoscopy is suggesting, bearing false witness against me.

Just setting the record straight.

Thank you. :)

You keep ignoring the statement of Jesus in Matthew 12:38 to 42. He states quite explicitly it is the only sign of him being the Messiah. Therefore the time in the grave is extremely important. At that time when a prophecy was made in Israel and it failed to come true the so called prophet would be put to death. Trying to say it was not absolutely accurate means his prophecy might be false. Why do you ignore what Jesus explicitly stated was the only sign of him being the Messiah.

I am trying to find the understanding of the phrase "heart of the earth" used in parables in the old testament of Jonas "belly of hell" and the Son of man Jesus "heart of the earth" Just what those phrases both mean and how it is used in relationship to one another "belly of hell" and "heart of the earth".

Heart of the earth would seem to represent the tribulations of natural man as the wickedness of men. Christ coming as that Son of man coming to offer his body as a living sacrifice pleasing to the father who worked with the Son in perfect harmony to one another..

Again "heart of the earth" (not dirt where a person could not breath) would represent the imaginations of men who have no faith needed to hear God. It was given to both Jonas and Jesus as the Son of man .Both cried, both were strengthened by the father to finish the work.

Genesis 6:5And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

In both cases it indicates a living work of suffering. Christ a living sacrifice (Christ cannot die) and as Jonas cried out he was heard and was eased of his tribulation. The same applied to Christ in the garden the beginning of the three day threes night demonstration .

I would suggest it is the opening scene, closing the three day demonstration of the Spirit pouring out its life on Sunday, the first day of the week. The day God said let their be children of light, the new creation

Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.Mathew 26:38-

Luke 22:43-45 King James Version (KJV)
And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,

He continued that promised demonstration from the garden to the cross.

Jonah's tribulation as a three day demonstration began the moment Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. Therefore not mixing faith in what he did hear, he hardened his heart.

The word three is used throughout scripture to denote the end of a matter.

Jonah 2 King James Version (KJV)Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.
And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.Jonas 2:1-10

I keep telling people on the board the same thing about the Sabbaths. Seems to go right over some of their heads. One poster took me to task asking me how I knew the specific date was on the Wednesday. Those seem to blind themselves to you just count the days and not worry about the specific date in a specific year.

Endoscopy,
re: "Here is your quote. Whenever the three days and three nights of Matthew 12:40 is brought up in a 'discussion' with 6th day crucifixion folks, they frequently argue that it is a Jewish idiom for counting any part of a day as a whole day. I wonder if anyone has documentation that shows that the phrase 'x' days and 'x' nights was ever used in the first century or before when it didn’t include at least parts of the 'x' days and at least parts of the 'x' nights?"

And where in that quote do I assert anything "about the Sabbath being the weekly Sabbath"?

For the purpose of this topic, "heart of the earth" is defined as the tomb or at the earliest to the moment when the Messiah's spirit left His body at the time of His death.

This topic is directed to anyone who believes the crucifixion took place on the 6th day of the week, and who thinks the "heart of the earth" is referring to the tomb or at the earliest to the moment when the Messiah's spirit left His body at the time of His death, and who tries to explain the lack of a third night by saying that the Messiah was employing common figure of speech/colloquial language. It is only asking for examples from the first century or before to support the idea of commonality. This is the one and only issue with which this topic is concerned. So far, however, most of the replies have been off topic by dealing with other issues.

Threads at times certainly do get derailed. It is my opinion, based on scripture that Jesus was dead for literally 3 exact evenings and mornings which is how a length of day is stated in Genesis. There was also a high sabbath leading up to the Jesus dying on the cross so therefore Jesus did not die on 'Good Friday' but rather Wednesday evening before Sundown. He rose from the dead on Saturday evening before the start of the weekly Sabbath after a period of 72 hours or 3 days, and appeared on the first day of the week which is Sunday.

No one in the history of the church has proven that Christ died on a Wednesday, or a Thursday. All of these attempts are made to figure out the "3 days and 3 nights" Christ mentioned because of a difficulty with this statement and a traditional dying on Friday which is supported by Scripture.

Some believe it ("3 days and 3 nights") to be a figure of speech, and, that he died on Friday. Of course it is also believed to be the same with Jonah, a figure of speech. I'm not tripping out here thinking it had to be literal, to the very last second. 40 days is probably a figure of speech. 1000 is probably also a figure of speech, not an exact number. Consider this text; Psalm 50:10. Does this mean God only owns the cattle on a 1000 hills, and on hill number 1001 and so on, they're not his? Which 1000 hills are they? Which hill is number 1372? They have to be numbered, so which ones are which?

Now, if any of you care to prove it was literally 72 hours to the very second, I'm here to listen.

I'm contented with the possibility that it was a figure of speech. Some of you that can't think critically or accept figurative language and are on an unsustainable path to interpret Scripture accurately and consistently - much of what Jesus said was figurative and you'll have to deal with this. Insert fundamentalist posturing here "I only take the Bible LITERALLY and you are on your way to hell for taking it figuratively!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Yeah, "I know."

Please pluck out your right eye and cut off your right hand and prove your literal interpretation claim to be true.

This fact of figurative speech does not do away with one thing that he was saying in any instance. Note Matthew 13:13 and Matthew 11:25-30 for further thought.

Now, go ahead, tear me to pieces, malign, bear false witness and disparage me.
