This came up today at work, a number of people in the office had attended a
two work conference/seminar/getting to know people from other offices up and
down the country. It entailed staying at a hotel for 2 days.

I didn’t go due to care commitments and to be honest I would have hated it even
if I could have gone. I would rather spend free time with friends/family, you know those
people I actually have something in common with besides just work, people I can actually
chat with rather than just making small talk. I also prefer to keep work and my own life separate.

But anyway others were insisting I would have loved it! I don’t think so I would rather
have all my teeth pulled, you can pick your friends but not your work. Colleagues! 🙂

But I was wondering what others think. Are you the sort of person who enjoys going out
with works mates after work, going to work meals etc? Maybe I’m just strange!

Yes I do.

And for one main reason - to have the opportunity to minister to them about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Of course, I cannot just blurt it out to them lol but I have to establish friendships first, followed by trust, etc. Once I gain their friendship then it makes things alot easier to share with them the Gospel and/or how accepting Jesus into my life has changed for the better. In fact, God has used me multiple times at work to share the Gospel and even lead devotional groups. I figured, I spend most of my time at work anyway, so why not use that time & opportunity to share with the lost?

Anyway, I understand that this scenario might not be as easy as where others may work BUT we serve a mighty God, and if our hearts are yearning for those who are lost who have not heard of the Gospel, then God will use you no matter where or who you work for or with:)

Only the ones I share common interests with and that are female or related to me (but that's mostly just to avoid the confusions that can come when a girl invites a guy to do something).

After work, I'm generally too tired to socialize and usually there's stuff around the house that needs to be done anyway.

Saturday and Sunday evenings I try to keep free, especially when the kids are here.

I’m often the same, busy tired etc. Would rather chill at home.

I’ve seen that a lot as well. There is nothing worse than going out on a
works do snd watching while staff get absolutely blathered with alcohol.
Then trying not to feel too embarrassed by their antics. Especially when you
have to see them at work later.

A little bit of both...
In our professional community of 'Military Operations Research Analysts' there are a combination of occasions that tend to crop up...
I can go with the flow or not as I see fit... I tend to go my own way most of the time, but when the topic and the occasion suit - getting to work with active and retired military folks that have the same interests for a particular topic or event - are typically not too bad to hang out with.
In the workplace - for team building, camaraderie and cross pollination purposes our office hosts a weekly Friday morning Bagels and coffee where the morning starts off with some trivial and then someone usually shares a project that they are working on.
A smaller branch within the same organization host a weekly hotdog Wednesday lunch - where they gather around their conference table for lunch and chat about ongoing hot-topics within DoD.
This same 'Analyst' community hosts a collection annual seminars and workshops for purposes of sharing research and networking across the different services/organizations.
Other social opportunities occur for annual social 'Balls/Formal Dinners' or business related trips...

These days I typically pass on a lot of these opportunities, but I do selectively pick and choose to attend occasional topics that are of interest to my field of research/analysis. On these rare occasions getting lunch or dinner with a group of colleagues whom I have known or work with usually turns out to be alright...

As a military operations research analyst...

how do you feel about the battle in the Calvinist VS Arminian thread?

The calvinists were predestined to win, but the arminians aren't giving up yet because where there's a will there's a way.

(sorry I just couldn't resist)

:)I think I'll continue to remain outside that debate as a casual observer (w/popcorn)... gladly conceding that my operations research tends to focus more so upon future battles...

Don't think that is strange. It's just your personality. For me, The only friends I had were from work.. I guess we worked so many hours that we spent more time with each other. But yeah. We use to have BBQs almost every weekend in the spring and summer! They were absolutely my best friends. I miss my work terrible but what I miss most is Them.. Some were married, some not, older and young, everyone would come and have a blast!..lol. I guess times have changed in 2 years..lol...

If you don't have to go, I wouldn't go unless you have really good friends at work. I went to one of these huge two day conventions in Las Vegas for the place where I used to work and the convention itself was pretty boring. The hotel was nice though and I got to do a little gambling and sightseeing.

I didn’t go anyway, but various people were saying I would have enjoyed it.
I doubt I would have.

Never mix Work and Pleasure... That's an old wise saying that i go by...

Socializing with fellow workers is becoming more and more dangerous especially in these MeToo witch hunt days.. Any female co-worker can make any accusation they like and they will be Auto believed and you will lose you job and be lucky to avoid being thrown into prison.. If people are wise they will reduce socialization with fellow workers down to the absolute minimum..

A bit sexist there, huh?

I mean, any man or woman can make false accusations about someone else, not just females.

And here you were replying to a female (Miri) as well. Lol.

Not something I’ve ever come across.
But I’ve seen plenty of problems where work friends gossip about each other
when they fall out. Also when office romances go badly wrong.

We had a married couple where the husband started an affair with another staff
member. The brother of the said staff member was also the husband’s best friend!

Anyway when that all came out, the higher management had the job of having
to split them all up so they didn’t work on the same floor. The husband eventually
ended up leaving.

It didn’t help that all the people involved were managers themselves!

Actually lot of truth in what he is saying, if you are a man socializing with any work place female is just a bad idea, all it takes is one to lie and the mans life is ruined.

I went to a co-workers wedding actually but he got fired for...reasons and now we barely talk. He does have a wife and kids so I'm sure he has more important stuff to do but i did get the chance to explain the Gospel to him and even hung out with him enough to show him how i lived fairly well. I have no problem with being friends with people at work except for women possibly because that always gets complicated....good thing women tend not to work at my job lol. I doubt anyone cares about me outside of the job except maybe like one person but i don't regularly hang out with him cuz he ain't Christian and i don't need a guy that indulges in lust constantly constantly being around me all the time, i know I'm not very strong i can't fight sexual temptation so I'd rather just stay away from it if possible. Not only that but I'm pretty lame i don't regularly hang out with anybody really but then again i don't usually get that close to people so ehhh idk xD
