This is the "fire":

Isaiah 24:5-6, "5 For the earth has been defiled under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the Torah, changed the law, broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore a curse shall consume the earth, and those who dwell in it be punished. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth shall be burned, and few men shall be left.”

Matt 24:21-22, "For then will be great tribulation, such as has not come to pass since the beginning ofthe world to this time--no, nor ever will be. And unless those days were shortened, there would no flesh be saved; but for the elect's sake, those days will be shortened."

Malachi 4:1-6, "4:1, "“For look, the day shall come, burning like a furnace, and all the proud, and every wrongdoer shall be stubble. And the day that shall come shall burn them up,” said יהוה of hosts, “which leaves to them neither root nor branch."4:2, "“But to you who fear My Name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings. And you shall go out and leap for joy like calves from the stall."4:3, "“And you shall trample the wrongdoers, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this,” said יהוה of hosts."4:4, "“Remember the Torah of Mosheh, My servant, which I commanded him in Ḥorĕḇ for all Yisra’yl – laws and right-rulings."4:5, "“See, I am sending you Ěliyah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome day of יהוה."4:6, "“And he shall turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with utter destruction.” (Zec 14:13)

No we are not - the time was when the purging of fire would occur in the generation that heard him speak and specifically the period of war in 66 - 70 AD.

Jesus was referring to the cross. That time has been around for 2000 years.

Lets look at some other statements in regards to fire:

Matt 3:12 “His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

John states the winnowing fork was already in Christ's hand - this tells us the "gathering into his barn" was close - not 2000 years and counting.

The context is the land of Israel of the 1st century AD when the chaff of unbelieving Israel was burnt up in the Roman war of 66 - 70 AD.

As for the days being "shortened" we have Paul's testimony that the "fire" was imminent in his time:

Rom 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

Rom 9:28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?Luke 12:49
It would seem to be a companion verse to chapter 18 …...Compare fire to faith

Luke 18:8I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Will he find the faith of Christ working in the hearts of men, as the exclusive faith that comes from hearing God through the scriptures on earth .Or like with the time before the flood when men were unevenly yoked. No difference between believers and those who had no faith as it is written. But men walking after the personal experiences of their own deceitful hearts . like out of body experiences or near death or dream interpretations as their own witness evidence they have a relationship with God . Some would call "sign gift" .What I would call a sign of self righteousness.

Fire the second time not like the flood the first time. Fire will come on the last day

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.(no faith) And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart
