I am talking about the CoC that comes out of Independence Missouri, who believe that Joseph Smith rewrote Rev., who believe in Works needed for salvation, who believe that the NEW JERUSALEM will drop out of the sky into their town in Missouri,
That would be the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (RLDS Church). My wife grew up in that church and it's a cult. They go by the name "Community of Christ" now and even built a temple in Independence Missouri.

THEY DEFINITELY TEACH SALVATION BY WORKS: -

The Church of Christ does not teach that water washes away sin.
With all due respect make sure you have your facts correct about certain beliefs before you start to condemn them.
They do teach that you are not saved UNTIL you are water baptized. I at one time had attended a church of Christ several years ago when I was a teenager. They had a 5 step plan of salvation that went like this: 1. Hear 2. Believe 3. Repent 4. Confess 5. Be baptized then you are finally saved "after" baptism.

The reason why the CoC does not use instruments is because no where in the NT are we commanded to use them during worship.Yes, it mentions instruments, but there is no command and therefore the CoC refrains from this practice.
Musical instruments, if used with care, can enhance the singing of praise to the Lord.

That was seen by the Christian church that split from the church of Christ. Musical instruments were obviously considered a help to praise in the Old Testament. It seems strange to say that something God thought was a blessing in the Old Testament and is now an evil in the New Testament church.

Ephesians 5:19 says "..speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.." and correspondingly Colossians 3:16 says to, "..admonish one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs." The word "psalm" in the Greek dictionary, definition (#5568): "A set piece of music, i.e. a sacred ode (accompanied with the voice, harp, or other instrument)."

The root word of psalm is "psallo" which means to means "to twitch, twang or pluck," such as pluck a string of a musical instrument.

If the church of Christ (or any other church) wants to leave out musical instruments in their worship, that is their prerogative. But I don't believe that it's right for anyone to judge and condemn others who choose to use musical instruments like David did and as the apostle Paul instructed.

I can’t wait to get to heaven and hear the music of the angels. And hear the harps and I am sure many other musical instruments being played.

I appreciate your post. Check out a book called "Traces of the Kingdom" by Keith Sisman. The auhor was from England and did extensive research. People and congregations were referred to "church of Christ" in Europe (I think mainly England) long before the 19th century and Restoration Movement. They were extensively persecuted by the state religion and Catholicism. The book references many documents and it appeared they believed the 1st century Jesus' teachings.
Thank you... I will look for that book.

I'm sure there were people who used the name "church of Christ" in different times. In fact, I believe that is one of the reasons that the Stone/Campbell folks used it. I think it was taken from the scripture that says "the churches of Christ salute you" from Romans 16. It was considered to be a much more accurate name for the church than "Baptist" or "Presbyterian"...

I was (as I'm sure you know) simply trying to give a brief synopsis of the beginnings of the Church of Christ as it is widely known today. It will be interesting to read about those earlier groups... they may very well be the origins of the Stone/Campbell movement.

There are other groups that use a similar name, but are not in the same category.... much like the Westboro Baptists use the name "Baptist", but are not anything like the mainstream Baptist church.

Only reason why I responded to this thread was all the notifications I go on it. I can’t even remember the last time I logged on CC before tonight, but I have enjoyed reading how “wrong” I am be people who don’t even know what I believe. That’s always entertaining. Especially when beliefs change after 6 years... ;)

Gladly lol...
I Joefizz have done this by accident too for two reasons...
1.
a really good topic
2.It's hard to see that teeny tiny text under the thread name that tells the date

I am just curious.

Is there anyone here that is/are members of the Church of Christ?
I am a member, and I just wondered who else was. Just trying to touch bases and get a feel of this forum is all.

OHHHHHHH!!! And to those who may think that the CoC thinks we are the only ones going to Heaven...well, some may think that way, but I dont. I am not one to judge others for not believing the same way I do. So I really, do not want this thread to turn in to a church bashing thread like I have seen some people do that Catholics. Thank you. Amen.
I thought those were Jehovah's witnesses!?

Maybe this is not standard CoC doctrine, but i have read literature from a local CoC that teaches this doctrine. They also teach that using instruments in church will send you to hell. Maybe its only certain isolated churches that teach crazy stuff like this.
Now that's comedy!
No playing musical instruments otherwise you are hell bound, how many times did David play his harp again?

I liked people's posts in this thread mostly for some history and learning of doctrines.

Sorry about this comment I really don't know enough about Jehovah's witnesses to say such things and I noticed this thread is for "no church bashing".

Honestly I don't know anything about the Churches of Christ aside from what I've heard(just like with Jehovah's witnesses) all I've heard is that their focus is apparently Christ overwhelming ly,my info on Churches is very slim,in like manner I don't know what the "Churches of God" believe either, there are so many denominations but I wouldn't mind learning.

So do you believe that the New Jerusalem will touch down in Independence MO.? Do you believe that if you are not baptize by water your salvation is null and void? Do you believe that unless you are baptized by water in a CoC church it is also null and void ?

You say your not like the others,,,good, As Revelation tells us that all lamp stands are in Heaven, therefore there are many who are overcomers within each type of church. Most of them, I suspect will be saved in spite of themselves.
