SHINE SA Safe Schools Anti-bullying Initiative is a Department for Education and Child Development funded program dedicated to making schools safer and more inclusive for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, staff and families.
This initiative is delivered by SHINE SA and builds on our proud history of working with schools to reduce homophobia and transphobia.
Australian research shows that young people are still experiencing high levels of homophobia and transphobia in our schools, and that teachers are often unsure of how to respond and what actions to take. There are simple ways schools can proactively reduce related prejudice and discrimination, and ensure students feel safe, valued and connected to their school community. This is essential for all students for health, wellbeing and ongoing engagement in education.
This program takes a whole school approach to support all staff to understand their role in creating safe and inclusive learning environments. It goes beyond the classroom to look at school policy, practice, the school environment and student leadership opportunities.
