I agree with your first sentence but believe that "witnessing" is more than words, which is implied in your second sentence. I'd say then, that witnessing is shining the light of Christ through ourselves and drawing the lost to Him...in whatever (dignified) way we can do it.
Witnessing is required, in my view, but is certainly not limited to what we say.
