And He said to the disciples,

The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. They will say to you, ‘Look there! Look here!’ Do not go away, and do not run after them. For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. It was the same as happened in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

On that day, the one who is on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. Remember Lot’s wife. Whoever seeks to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left. There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.

And answering they said to Him,

Where, Lord?

And He said to them,

Where the body is, there also the vultures will be gathered.

(Luke 17:22-37)

why Lot's wife?
in this specific context, why Lot's wife?
what is it about her that we should remember?

something specific to her, specific to what these Hebrew men would have known immediately about her, right?
not something that could have been said about anyone else, but something about Lot's wife in particular?

what is it about Lot's wife we should remember, and why?
in the context of what Christ is saying and who He's saying it to?

Genesis 19:26 But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

She looked back at the cities being
destroyed. When they were told not to look back in genesis 19:17 And as they brought them out, one said, “Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.”

She did not obey what the Lord had said by the angels.

Lot's wife was buried in salt, a preservative.

why did she turn back? was it to preserve her life? did she not know - or not believe - that the city was being destroyed?

what happened to Lot's sons and sons-in-law? Genesis 19 ((where the account of the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah is found)) only mentions Lot and two of his daughters ((did he have more?)) having escaped, and his wife, who had turned back. these four are all that the account speaks of actually having been brought out:

But he hesitated. So the men seized his hand and the hand of his wife and the [o]hands of his two daughters, for the compassion of the Lord was upon him; and they brought him out, and put him outside the city.
(Genesis 19:16)

these four were physically taken by the hand and removed from the city

Lot's wife was taken by the hand by an angel and removed from the city

but wasn't Lot's family larger than this?

Then the two men said to Lot,
“Whom else have you here? A son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place; for we are about to destroy this place, because their outcry has become so great before the Lord that the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

(Genesis 19:12-13)

there are sons - what happened to them?
there is 'a son-in-law' -- doesn't this mean there is also a third, older daughter? the account mentions sons-in-law who were pledged to marry the two daughters who escaped, and that they scoffed when they were warned of the judgement. but these were not yet family, but pledged to become family of Lot through marriage.

why did Lot's wife turn back?
was it for her other children?
did she think she could save them? or did she intend to die with them?
or did she simply not believe the angels at all?

was she trying to preserve her life, or was she intending to lose it?

obviously i think this is a lot more complex than

"Lot's wife turned back because she loved sin, and she was destroyed for it in judgement -- so the message is don't love sin or you will be destroyed"

which is pretty much the sum total of 99% of commentary and preaching on this verse, stopping there and going no further.

let's go further :)

where is Christ in Genesis 19?
what is the analogy to what Christ is talking about in Luke 17?
why does He specifically say this, exactly when He says this, in exactly the context He says it?

"Lot's wife turned back because she loved sin, and she was destroyed for it in judgement -- so the message is don't love sin or you will be destroyed"

for example if this is the whole meaning of what Christ wants us to remember, why didn't He say '
remember Israel wandering in the wilderness' ?

the Israelites were taken out of Egypt, and wanted to go back there.
Lot's wife was taken out of Sodom, and turned back
neither one of them made it back.
neither one of them made it to where they were to be taken to, in both cases because in their hearts they '
turned back'

so what's the difference?
why specifically "
Remember Lot's wife" ?

Jesus is telling us to not be in love with this life on earth and be focused on the kingdom to come or the gathering of the Church. 17:33-35 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.
34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left.35 There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”

I always thought of the family relations back then were such that the SIL is the betrothed, as well as the husband. And it does say that Lot went to them and begged them (two) to come, but they laughed and would not. Two SIL for two daughters? Maybe the son is one of those two. Because the only reference to guys in the family were the betrothed, and they didn't live in the same house with him. But his daughters did. (Or they didn't, but they had come to visit the folks for the night.)

Why did his wife look back? For the same reason it would have been hard for me not to look back. Something massive was happening behind them. I'd have to see what. I'd need my neck braced not to look back. I don't know if God used a volcano, flood, sweeping winds or what, but no matter how you slice it, whatever could destroy 7 cities in a single night had to be LOUD. Not looking to see what would be nearly impossible for me. Not looking back would have been a major miracle from God right there for me.

Wouldn't every ounce of your being want to look back too?

why Lot's wife?

not something that could have been said about anyone else, but something about Lot's wife in particular?

what is it about Lot's wife we should remember, and why?
in the context of what Christ is saying and who He's saying it to?
Let's go back to the account of Lot and his family. They are a type of "the church" - namely the called out ones amongst the "world" in which they live. We know that Lot was righteous from the account (Genesis 18v32) because the Lord agreed to deliver Him after the intervention/intercession by Abraham.

Yet we find an interesting implication here. Lot and his family chose to live in Sodom. Amongst all these people who by all account were the most wicked people of the day. Lot looked with his "eyes" in Genesis 13v10 and saw that the plain of Jordan was favourable to the eyes, and in the sustenance he could get from the ground. He chose the easier path according to the flesh, and was willing to "put up with" all the unrighteousness around him.

So we have the account of the angels going in to deliver Lot and his family, we see a very clear instruction from the Lord.

Genesis 18
[SUP]17 [/SUP]So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he[SUP][a][/SUP] said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.” [SUP]18 [/SUP]Then Lot said to them, “Please, no, my lords! [SUP]19 [/SUP]Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. [SUP]20 [/SUP]See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”

[SUP]21 [/SUP]And he said to him, “See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. [SUP]22 [/SUP]Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there.”

- here we have the account of the angels instructing that they were to (1) Escape (2) Not look back (3) Go to the mountains
- Lot interjects (verses 18-20) most likely because he quite likes the easier life. To choose an easier city (that is like the city he has to flee)
- the Lord hears this and relents, and says he can flee to this city that Lot requests. Notice: The three instructions above. Only the last one was an agreed compromise. They were still to (1) Escape, and (2) Not look back.

And thus we have the final account in Genesis 19v26 [SUP]26 [/SUP]But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
- she disobeyed the word of the Lord, based on a clear instruction
- we can surmise that although she initially escaped Sodom (the world) physically, Sodom (the world) never left her heart.
- she enjoyed the pleasures that Sodom offered (lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, pride of life)
- it is for this reason that she fell into immediate judgement.

We see the same thing after Israel was delivered from Egypt. They kept looking back to Egypt. And this resulted in them falling in the wilderness.

Now the application to the New Testament writings. Jesus is addressing a question to his immediate disciples. And foretelling them what will happen during the final days up until the Day of the Lord. So by implication this impacts those disciples today who are looking to the return of Christ.

IF YOU ARE READY, AND LOOKING FOR THE DAY OF THE LORD, you will DISCERN this particular day correctly. If you tarry and wait and in your heart rather choose to go and try and save the things you own (the world's goods), you will fall into the same judgement. The Lord has delivered you from the world, you are to ensure that the world has no hold on you.

The thing that catches me about Gen. 19 is Christ isn't there. Three "angels" came to visit Abraham in Gen. 18, and Abraham pleaded for Sodom and Gomorrah. At the end of that chapter, two angels left to go see Lot. That means one stayed.

I think Jesus was the angel that stayed. (Can't prove it, but think it anyway.)

Genesis 19:26 But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

She looked back at the cities being destroyed. When they were told not to look back in genesis 19:17
And as they brought them out, one said, “Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.”

She did not obey what the Lord had said by the angels.

because they hesitated, the angels took her by the hand and took her out of the city
((is that like us? have we been taken by the hand and led out of a place that is being judged?))

what happened next?

did she wrestle herself free from their grip?
were the angels unable to stop her?

they weren't obeying while they were in the city -- Lot was like, '
o the mountains are too far, let me flee somewhere closer please' ((Genesis 19:18-20)) and then they hesitated to leave -- so the angels took them out.
((is that like us? do we hesitate, and fail to completely follow the word spoken to us? are we then out of His compassion taken by the hand and forcefully removed from judgement?))

& Christ is talking about the end of the age of the gentiles in Luke 17 -- what is the implication there?? can we be taken out by the hand of angels, and still be condemned?

But he hesitated. So the men seized his hand and the hand of his wife and the hands of his two daughters, for the compassion of the LORD was upon him
(Genesis 19:16)

it is specifically because of the compassion of the Lord she and two daughters and Lot were taken by the hand and taken out! when they themselves hesitated! did the LORD's compassion then fail? when they were faithless, did He remain faithful? and then was He still faithful when outside the city, Lot's wife turned back?

is Lot's wife condemned at all? or was she preserved?

what is the symbol of salt?
it's important, right?
why wasn't Lot's wife buried in ash, or sulphur?
why was she buried at all? why not just struck down, or burned up?

so many questions!!

Luk 17:28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
Luk 17:29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
Luk 17:30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
Luk 17:31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
Luk 17:32 Remember Lot's wife.
Luk 17:33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

Luk 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

2Pe 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
2Pe 2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
2Pe 2:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds).

Lot was a righteous man vexed with the things that Sodom and Gomorrah were engaged in,terrible sin.

But it appears that Lot's wife was not righteous like Lot,and did not detest Sodom and Gomorrah as Lot did.

It seems like Lot's wife looking back is symbolic of someone looking back to the old lifestyle in admiration, after being delivered, and it could be she was upset that it was overthrown, and did not want to leave.

But we do know for sure she did not obey the voice of the angel, and paid the price.

But what is the reasoning not to look back when what can it hurt that they see it being overthrown, which seems because she was upset that she had to leave Sodom and Gomorrah, for she liked it there, and the cities are representative of sin.

No man putting their hand to the plough looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.

Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it,and whosoever will lose their life shall preserve it.

Lot's wife did not want to lose her life of dwelling in Sodom and Gomorrah, even after she witnessed how wicked they were on a daily basis, and how wicked they were when the men of the city surrounded the house, and wanted the 2 men to be brought out to have sex with them, but she liked being there.

Why Lot,the righteous man, stayed there,is a mystery, unless he did not have any place to go,or was settled in before he found out how terrible they were, and then did not want to move,or it was a plan of God to send him there,so God could test the cities to see if there were any righteous by how they treated the 2 men in the future.

It could be that the angel said get away as fast as you can,and do not look back for that can hinder you from getting away as fast as you can, like Jesus said when they see the abomination of desolation,to get away as fast as you can,do not get your clothes,or anything else, but run like the dickens, pray that it will not be winter time,or you have a child,or the sabbath day, which can slow a person down.

But I believe it is symbolic of one that looks back to the old lifestyle, admiring it,after being delivered.

She had to leave everything behind, her life as she knew it. Those things she left behind where more precious to her then obeying the LORD. Fits right in with what Jesus was telling the Jew who'd be facing the destruction of their home city Jerusalem. If they didn't flee to the mountains as Jesus warned they'd be taken out in death like Lot's wife. So when they saw the coming of the Roman army, they were to flee, to get out, or they'd be taken out. Remembering Lot's wife was a warning to the 1st century Christian Jews get the heck out of dodge when God's wrath was going to be unleashed upon Israel.

As for Luke 17, something HUGE was going to happen after Christ dies and rose again. A storm came. It's name is "Christianity." You don't just leave it alone that a man died, rose, again, and continued to preach with the authority of someone who just said he would die and rise again because he is God. That one just doesn't fade away like the mood ring did. That one grew. And many believed, and kept believing. More and more believed.

All this in a land where there were already plenty of gods to choose from. More importantly, in a land where the emperor was supposed to be THE God!

That's going to annoy the emperor... and it did. In 25-40 years time, the number of Christ-believers grew massively, and they would NOT worship the emperor. So the emperor decided to put an end to it. Another storm hit. His name was Nero. He sent his soldiers into the fields, and took the ones who would not worship him. Those soldiers took the ones hiding on the rooftops that would not bow down to the emperor and took them. And he slaughtered them.

To this day there is a salty rock in a desolate area that they call "Lot's wife." Jesus was telling them -- his followers -- and us -- his followers -- not to give in to the fear. Not to give in to the demands. To be willing to lay down our lives in trusting him. AND he was telling that to a people who would see the day when Rome would come for them to slaughter them by the hundred's of thousands.

Don't you think they needed the reminder of that rock in that desolate place for a good reason never to look back?

We got it easy. No one is killing us for believing. But we're not the only believers in the world. There are countries where believing is going to get you killed. They remember that rock named "Lot's wife" too. Look forward, not back.

Lot's wife. (I hope this works. If it doesn't, google wiki's article about Lot's wife for this image.)

the story makes no mention of the sons and son in laws being in the house with Lot and the angels so i would think they were included in the "all men young and old" that went after the angels, strange flesh according to Jude.

what is it about Lot's wife we should remember, and why?
Do you love the world system? You'll get what you wanted and enter into the Great Tribulation. We're outta here.

But to the wicked God says:
“What right have you to declare My statutes,
Or take My covenant in your mouth,
Seeing you hate instruction
And cast My words behind you?
When you saw a thief, you consented with him,
And have been a partaker with adulterers.
You give your mouth to evil,
And your tongue frames deceit.
You sit and speak against your brother;
You slander your own mother’s son.
These things you have done, and I kept silent;
You thought that I was altogether like you;
But I will rebuke you,
And set them in order before your eyes. Psalm 50:16–21 (NKJV)

And He said to the disciples,
On that day, the one who is on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. Remember Lot’s wife. Whoever seeks to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left. There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.

why Lot's wife?
in this specific context, why Lot's wife?
what is it about her that we should remember?
Lot's wife did not want to leave.

Each believer has to lean on Him to be ready & willing to leave, because the snares of this life can tempt even a believer not to leave this life on this world when the Bridegroom comes.

In Luke 14:15-24, we see people invited to the King's Supper making excuses not to come for the cares of this life or a loved one. Jesus expounded on that parable by testifying to the cost of discipleship in Luke 14:25-33 in being willing to depart all possessions and loved ones behind.

We see this warning again below.

Luke 21:[SUP]33 [/SUP]Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.[SUP] 34 [/SUP]And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.[SUP] 35 [/SUP]For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.[SUP] 36 [/SUP]Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

So may every believer pray to Jesus, asking for help to be willing to go as well as help to discern and depart from iniquity of our Good Shepherd so as to be ready to go.

I've always suspected there was far more to the story of Lots wife than meets
the eye. Most people would've been tempted to LOOK at what was happening.
Most of us would also have ended up as a pillar of salt - be honest how many
of you would have just taken a quick peek.

Here are a couple of different translations below. One says she looked back behind Him.
Another says she was behind Him and looked back. I'm not sure which is correct.
Does it make a difference, probably not but I've often wondered if there is a
parallel here to the Passover. Plus who is Him, it doesn't say she looked back
behind herself!

This is me speculating. :)

The angel of God was sent to cause destruction to the first born Egyptians where homes were
not covered by the blood of the lamb. Those who were inside and covered were
passed over. They had no need to look back, they just had to prepare and stay put
to be safe. But any who went outside to take a look would have been in peril.

Maybe just maybe, the same Angel of God was sent to the cities of the plain.
There was no home to hide on, no door frame to cover in blood of a lamb.
Just instructions to run and not to look back. Maybe by obeying they were "covered"
and safe. Obedience was their umbrella, their covering. The umbrella only covered
so much ground.

Imagine an umbrella with people huddled under it running together, in order to
look back you would have to slow down and turn around a bit. Maybe that put Lots
wife outside of the safe covering of the umbrella of protection. just as it would have
done if the Israelites had stepped outside of the house.

I have a vivid imagination, but hopefully you can see where I'm coming from. :)

Genesis 19:21-26 NKJV
[21] And he said to him, "See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that
I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. [22] Hurry, escape there.
For I cannot do anything until you arrive there." Therefore the name of the city
was called Zoar. [23] The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar
[24] Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from
the LORD out of the heavens. [25] So He overthrew those cities, all the plain,
all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. [26] But his wife
looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Genesis 19:21-26 NLT
[21] "All right," the angel said, "I will grant your request. I will not destroy
the little village. [22] But hurry! Escape to it, for I can do nothing until you
arrive there." (This explains why that village was known as Zoar, which
means "little place.") [23] Lot reached the village just as the sun was rising
over the horizon. [24] Then the LORD rained down fire and burning sulfur from
the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah. [25] He utterly destroyed them, along
with the other cities and villages of the plain, wiping out all the people and
every bit of vegetation. [26] But Lot's wife looked back as she was following
behind him,
and she turned into a pillar of salt.

Genesis 19:26 NIV
[26] But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
