I always have a Swiss Army knife (Victorinox, Spartan model). An ex got it for me while on vacation in Switzerland.

I have it on me all the time. It's opened wine and beer bottles, freed 4x8 signs from their constraints, buttered sandwiches, stripped a wire, opened boxes, etc, etc, etc.

I don't go half a day without using some implement on it.
 
Man I'm still reeling over how much there is to learn about guns... and now I have to learn about knives too.. :eek:
 
On the topic of knives, what is your preferred method of sharpening?

I like to use my sharpening system that has the clamp, stones and bars to grind the edge to a specific angle. Then I will dress against a steel to straighten out the wire edge, then pull the edge through my bamboo cutting board lightly to remove that wire edge. Doing it this way, I can get my knives sharp enough to pass the paper test and they hold that edge for a long time.

I just whale away at it on a diamond stone until it gets sharp, or I get tired.... :o

I used to use Washita and hard Arkansas stones, but once I tried the diamond stones, I haven't looked back.

I DO have a small HARD Arkansas stone that is black, that will polish an edge better than ceramic. I sometimes use that as a finish, but mostly I just use a fairly fine diamond stone and call it good.
 
I keep a handful of buck knives on hand and a few Old Timers.......as a Machinist I have made a few out of A-2 and S-7 tool steels with black Lexan handles and brass accessories.......
 
I went to Bass Pro today for only the 2nd time in my life (first time was last week) and I made sure to check out these Buck knives you guys and gals have been raving about... nice knives, but I don't see how they could be carried without getting noticed.

Also, I bought a rifle case, an A2 sight adjustment tool, a handgun sleeve/case and a tripod folding seat. :D I also noticed that they didn't have any AR15s on display.. not one. But they had a whole wall full of hunting-style rifles and shotguns. I guess its a california thing..

Cool I always liked those two brands.I am a machinist as well. What type or types do ya work on .

Well, what have I not worked on would be a better question HAHAH.....the first shop I worked in was strictly military....parts for F-16's F-18's Harpoon Missiles, C-4 Transports, etc. and even the space shuttle (aft propulsion systems).....have machined parts for Kimberly Clark, McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell International, Boeing, Siemans, and dozens upon dozens of companies....have bored out and re-sleeved the cylinders on an old pan head Harley engine, bored out old axle housings, etc.... have operated Mazak mills and lathes, CNC quick turn 30, Horizontal Boring mills, Mills, surface grinders, Sunnen Inside diameter hone, etc.......Love machining and the smell of a machine shop.....actually retired after 14 years.....went into woodworking and helped my cousin in his custom cabinet shop (cnc routers) hahahah How about you?

Materials like lenin phenolic, stainless steels, aluminums of every flavor, Inconel, brass, brillium, titanium, cold rolled, hot rolled you name it......

Yeah...WALMART in Missouri carries At-15's hahah....I like BUCK because of a few reasons...

a. Will hold an edge<---pain to sharpen but will hold it
b. Quality
c. I had a lock blade once that got loose because I was chopping wood with it......sent it back to buck and they fixed, cleaned and sent back with a new case.....

So what's the trick to sharpening a Buck?

Thanks for the info on Bucks. Man I really hate california gun laws. The walmarts here don't even sell real guns anymore, just ammo. And when I was at bass pro yesterday I saw 10 round Magpul P-Mags and they look like little baby p-mags. So sad. :(
 
I have a bunch of pocket knives. Probly around 30 or so. But the one I carry is a tiny little Buck knife. A Buck 283 Nano Bantam. Overall length is about 2.5". The blade is just shy of 2". I carry it because it doesn't take up much space in my pocket, and the little blade works just fine for about 95% of the things I need a knife for.

IMO, Germany makes the best knives.

Buck Creek

Shrade has some decent knives, too.
