You also understand that there is a difference between tithing and giving?
Yes, but there is something special about the tithe that Jesus is still receiving it.

It could be that we should be doing Deuteronomy 26 (Tithing the Tithe) in our prayer closet before going to church to give the tithe.

It should be a personal time of private worship in the presence of the Lord.

Most people just be bucket plunkin when they give as though they are tipping the Lord kinda like they tip a waitress... cheaply.

It could be that we should be doing Deuteronomy 26 (Tithing the Tithe) in our prayer closet before going to church to give the tithe. This tithe was done every 3rd year(v. 12). As I pointed out earlier, this was the Poor tithe. It was one of 3 types of tithes required of crop/livestock growing Israelites. You're trying to turn an O.T. 3rd year tithe into a yearly tithe?

Deuteronomy 26 also mentions first fruits, which are in addition to tithes. What about those?

Most people just be bucket plunkin when they give as though they are tipping the Lord kinda like they tip a waitress... cheaply. I think we should all practice what Paul taught:

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. -2 Cor 9:7.

If God has laid it upon you to give that certain amount, I won't argue it. It isn't a universal principle, though, as tithing consisted of 3 types in the O.T.(and offerings and first fruits) and became a matter of the heart in the N.T.

with yo non tithing selfs You realize that opposing tithing doesn't mean tithing opponents oppose giving?

You also understand that there is a difference between tithing and giving?

It seems like a growing number of people will give whatever they want and call it a tithe regardless of whether or not it's actually 10%.

More and more are confusing the two and think tithing and giving are synonymous when they aren't.

While I do not support the tithing system of the O.T.(which had multiple types of tithes), I do support giving sacrificial gifts and offerings to the church. I think a majority of tithing opponents on here take a similar view.
If a Pastor asks for 10% that is all he will get. We put a bucket in the back of the sanctuary and never, ever have an "arm twistin offerin message"

So is the bucket an "offering bucket"?

What does your church call the $ put into the bucket? When people give, what do they call the $ they give?

Deuteronomy 26 also mentions...
Some stuff we say before the Lord to honor, praise and thank Him.

We should put our relationship with Him first and remember... He is a Person Who needs to be ministered to.

IN CHRIST we are living in the acceptable year of the Lord (Jubilee) so we should enter in to His rest (He is our Sabbath) walking in agree with Him accepting what He says above what all others say.

Yes its an offering/giving bucket.

We call it giving, our people call it grace giving and offerings. If a person can only give a penny or $5,000 it does not matter.

We do not put limits on giving and let God direct the heart of the giver, which means we do not put limits on God either.

Tithe and tithing is not for today.

How do your pastor(s) teach giving?

Giving is the foundation of our faith***God so loved the world He gave***when we minimize giving to do whatever is in your heart your missing God's purpose in giving; for it it not to get from you, but to give to you, for when you sow you reap***if you can't afford to tithe, start where you can and build up***after 40 years I can say it does prosper a person to tithe and give offerings***the purpose of prospering is so we can do more for God's Kingdom...

2 Cor 8 & 9 are at odds with you here.

Giving has nothing to with faith at all and is another false teaching. Anyone who says Faith is involved in giving is expecting to get something back. Giving comes from a cheerful heart and an attitude that says I received freely and ow freely I give back with no expectation of a return.

Tithing promotes pride/control and condemnation/rejection.

Pride and control for those who give 10% and additional offerings and condemnation/rejection for those that cannot afford 10% and because of that cannot give extra offerings.

Passing the plate around just adds gas to this fire. Passing a plate around forces someone to give whether or not they have the means to give and usually compulsion is not the law of a cheerful giver.

I know far too many pastors that promote 10% tithing and the church is broke and cannot even engage in the great commission because of it.

I used to be the same way, until a very wise spiritually mature elder pulled me aside, showed me some things in scripture and asked me top pray, fast and ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom on it.

I did and one Sunday we stopped passing the plates and making offering speeches. We put the bucket in the back and just let folks know what it was for and to give with a cheerful heart as God lead them.

In that single offering we took more in, than we had for 3 months in all offering times combined.

I never saw that Jesus gave just 10% of himself, he gave ALL of himself. I would much rather let people give ALL they can than a compelled 10% and nothing more.

By the way, you may want to get your arm checked for a possible break, it happens when folks pat their backs real hard.

I never saw that Jesus gave just 10% of himself, he gave ALL of himself. If you teach people to give the way Jesus did in every aspect of their lives and not just in the financial area..............<drops the mic>

Let's face it. This discussion exists only because some are looking for an excuse not to tithe. I was one of them for a long time. I was brought up in a family that believed that not only were we to tithe, but we were also to ensure that we put an offering in the collection plate every time it was passed (every service). I spent a long time after I left home using the scriptures to justify my not tithing. That's easy. I can find a lot of them. One year I received a rather large income tax return, and no matter what I wanted to spend it on, it was still a good bit short. Mama told me to give the whole check to the church. I tried to justify not doing it, but every reason that I came up with, she said that it was just an excuse. To make a long story short, I dropped the excuses, and gave that check to the church. From that point on, every time I start looking for a reason not to tithe, God lets me know that it's really just an excuse.

Instead of looking for excuses, give God back a tithe of what he has blessed you with.

What's your excuse for not giving the three types of types of tithes mentioned in the O.T.?

Which of the three are you giving and why not the other two?

Those of us who object to tithing generally believe in grace giving.

Tithe and tithing is not for today.
If that were true, Jesus would not be accepting tithes...

And yes, we should be giving even more than 10% when we give offerings and when we give to the poor.

I know this will add nothing to this thread but I was in a church once that did this.

An offering back used to go round.
One day the elder stood up and said
"As the offering bag goes round, if you are in need then please do not put in but please feel free to take out"

You should have seen some of the looks on people faces.

Anyway long story short the amount put in the bag that was counted increased and increased.

This money was then set aside and used for the fund to help the needy.

Do do you give 10% net or gross? Not asking to trip you up just interested.

I have a direct debit of 10% net salary.
Then me and wife constantly ask God who needs help that we can help.

I am not lying but it has not been unusual for either me or the wife say to each other "I feel God has said this to give/help So and so" I have felt the same thing and most of the time when either say £??? we are very close with what we both think with no prior discussion.

So for me 10% direct to the church and everything above that to the needy.

Well, "do do" to you too!

(I know, it was just a typo...)

God's says to honor the Lord with the first fruits so gross (before taxes) not net (after taxes)

It's kooL that you and your wife would be hearing the same thing on helping individuals... that shows unity in the Holy Ghost which is how it's supposed to be!

LoL my son laughs every time he hears "do do" and he's 20.

I am happy with net of taxes but I know others think differently so I'm not going to knock it. It's between God and the individual.

I am not saying your like this but I do know of people who give 10% gross and that's it. Nothing more.

I give 10% net to the church for the running of the church.

We also give on a monthly basis to a few charities, Christian and non Christian.

So all in all we go beyond 10% of gross.

I am glad you 'do do' what God has laid on your heart to 'do do'

On a side note how did you add the laughing emoji?
