Good for you, Tin.... I don't mind killing an animal, especially for meat, but I don't want them to suffer. I want it to be as quick as possible.
Just to clarify: I am not against harvesting an animal for sustenance.

That being said, in my opinion, there are only two reasons to kill an animal.

1) To provide food for yourself and/or your family.

2) For self defense ........ in the event of an attack by the animal on your person, and/or your family.

I find it quite easy to go to the local Grocery to purchase whatever meat I desire to eat. The one and only time I ever went hunting was, hmmmm, I am going to say around 1965, but it could be '64 or '66, can't remember exactly. Hunting for ANIMALS I should stipulate.

I have been attacked by a dog a time or two, but found ways to defend myself, and remove the threat without killing the dog. Not that the thought didn't enter my mind. :) I have killed a snake or three or four, but I do not consider them "animals," although some people DO harvest them for their meat.

Anyway, I just do not find pleasure in "hunting." Not saying it is wrong. If it is something a person enjoys, that's fine with me. I just hope they are not doing so JUST FOR THE SPORT of killing an animal.

While I understand your statement, and agree with most of it, there is another reason for killing animals, and that is population control.

Some animals have no natural predators, and very rapidly overpopulate an area, which is much more detrimental to the animals than hunting/killing is.

Wild hogs are the most obvious "offender" in this category. They breed like rabbits, having two to three litters a year, sometimes 8-10 in a litter. While the little pigs are targets of prey for some predators, the hog herd is pretty intimidating toward any predator, so many of the babies grow up to make MORE babies.

All across the south, hogs have become an epidemic.... absolutely destroying farm and ranch land for use. It has gotten so bad that it has become legal to shoot them from helicopters. You wouldn't believe the damage a SMALL herd of hogs can do to farm crops or ranch land.... it literally looks like a huge roto-tiller has gone through.

Prarie dogs have been much the same way, but not quite as destructive..... but even they can destroy farm and ranch land quickly, if not controlled. They used to be controlled by poisoning, which tends to kill off a lot of other predator animals who eat the poisoned p-dogs. Plus, to my mind, a bullet that kills an animal instantly is MUCH preferred to a slow death by poison.

I have lost much of my desire to hunt, as I've gotten older, but I still would harvest a deer/elk/small pig simply because I enjoy eating them.

I'm sure you can handle a moose using a .308, Desdichado, the .308 is fully capable of it:D
I shall defer to your experience, then. :) .308 it is. I've always liked the round, so I'm game.

Come to think of it, is there a round I don't like?

Maybe the .40 or .357 Sig.

Even then, I don't hate them like some people do. If you can handle a .40 or .357 Sig better than other rounds in a gun you love handling, go ahead. More power to you.

I'll kind of sort of judge you and will definitely argue with you when discussing the caliber debate with a newcomer. But if you can shoot decent groups quickly with whatever you've got, I'll feel safer sitting next to you at the diner.

Okay two more caveats. I will clear the room if you:

1. Open carry a Desert Eagle.

2. Have somehow gotten your hands on a Nambu Type 94.

Oh and I'm also not a huge fan of the .380. Ick.

I don't like Glocks. They're amazing guns, and have great reputations, but they feel completely wrong in my hand. They're not comfortable for me which severely cuts down on my accuracy. The first gun I buy will likely be a 9 mm. Sig Sauer. A little small, but easy to conceal. (I really have to talk to the people who are designing women's clothes, it is IMPOSSIBLE to conceal a weapon!)
It's fine if you wear a button up over a regular shirt all the time (I do that half the time anyway) but obviously that's not always fashionable.

There are lot of ways for ladies to conceal. It's just a matter of finding the right gun and the right clothing (same with men). I knew a very petite woman who managed to conceal a full-size .45 cal Sig. I doubt it was comfortable, but she did it.

She also wore sweatshirts a lot.

I'd stay away from purse holsters. Way harder to remove if you ever need them. I'm a big believer in split-second presentation. So much so that I only wear an IWB holster when I absolute have to (usually an office setting).

And don't forget getting rid of pests like squirrel. I actually find it quiet fun shooting them, as long as they die quickly. I remember one time I shot a squirrel, I don't even know if the shot killed it or not,but it fell out-of the tree and busted open when it hit the ground. That was pretty gross. And then there was a time when I clipped the snout of a squirrel and it's face end-all bloody. I felt a little bad about that one. But other than that, squirrel are an ever present nuisance that are good for target practice.

When I take the dog on a walk, the parents insist I take my gun. But since I'm usually in pants and a T-shirt anyway, I usually just stick it down the back of my waistband. That works well enough for me. I really need to get around to buying a holster, though. I've been meaning to, but I'm afraid I'm atrociously picky.

For something like that, I would just go to Wal-Mart and pick up a $10 Uncle Mike's holster. It's a good stand-in while you consider more pricey options.

I still occasionally use mine for bedside purposes.

Meh, out Walmart here sucks. Earlier this year most of their holster stock depleted and has yet to be replenished.

Gosh. Well, just remember Uncle Mikes, hahaha. Blackhawk has some really high-value options as well.

I love how your parents insist that you walk armed. That's awesome.

With me it's the opposite. My dad has a couple guns, but never, ever carries.

On the topic of animal population, someone needs to harvest more rabbits. You cant swing a dead cat without hitting one

Same with white tail in my neck of the woods. We have urban bow hunters, though.

Yea, our area is starting to adopt that theory. I guess they finally found out what will happen if we listen to the PETA people
