I've made a bunch of jokes about why I am single. Last night though, I gave it some serious thought and realized something.
I never met anyone I wanted to pursue or that I was interested in beyond a platonic sense. I liked both of the women I married, but I was never in love with them. Ultimately, I think I am single because I know that all the years I tried to not be single I was just lying to myself and trying to do what other people were doing to try and feel "normal". I was battling against my preferred relationship status which is alone. Not to say it is impossible for me to ever meet a woman someday that I develop an interest in, but so far I've never met anyone even close.

Nothing wrong with having standards (the guy can't be a slob on the couch drinking beer and eating potato chips with a BBQ stain on a white T-shirt 24/7). But I think it is a bit overboard to have too high of standards. Relationships aren't about having check marks, which I interpreted your post as. Relationships are about growing with the person and loving them more and more each day, which in reality can be with anyone. Because (if both parties live that long) everyone will live to be old and grey anyways.
