Insomnia and I are always in a war and insomnia seems to be winning. This does not bode well for my day tomorrow. Practice for worship at 10am and I'm still awake at 3:22am. *facepalm
I remember a few years ago when I would see advertisements that intentionally tried to mimic the Windows XP default color scheme and act like they were scanning C: drive and finding viruses, to try to make you think your computer was infected and you needed to buy their antivirus.
A, my computer has a different theme so your ad looks very out of place.
B, my computer is running a Linux distro so I don't care what you claim to have found.
C, my whole system is running from a flash drive. The internal hard drive doesn't even come into play. How are you finding what you claimed?
In a way, yes. It's not that they can't, it's that the people who write viruses don't bother writing them for macs since a lot more people use PC's. I believe they would have to go back and write it again for the OS platform.
That is an old myth, much encouraged by Apple. As zero said, it's all about market share.
Basically if you have a Windows computer you have a Windows computer - they're all the same. So if you write a virus for a Windows computer you hit a lot of targets at once. Apple has much less market share so virus writers (may they rot in a special level of hell where they are forced to use Windows ME for eternity) don't really focus as much on them. But still, if you wrote a virus for the current version of OSX you would hit all the computers with that system. If Apple ever got really popular you would see a lot more viruses for mac.
And of course Linux is a whole world of diverse systems, so you might as well give up trying to write a virus. It may hit the one single computer you are targeting, but you won't get any return. And the owner of that one single computer is probably a nerd who has his important files on an offline external drive anyway.
Thanks Lynx and Zero. My son has a mac and keeps telling me he doesnt need anti virus because Macs are "immune." Not techy myself so I cant respond but might have him read your responses so he understands it is possible.
There are some good free antiviruses out there. Money is not an excuse to not keep your computer protected. And in a world online, your infected computer can be spewing spam and viruses to others, so getting an antivirus is being a good online neighbor.
But please don't ask me what a good free antivirus for mac is, as I have never had a mac. I would recommend googling "best freeware mac antivirus" or some such.

Taking the kids the beach today. I always have this ideal fantasy in my head when we go, everyone will build castle's and play in the water and get a long. Have some lunch, not complain, just relax. Reality: Mom, she won't share that, Mom he splashed me in the face, oh my gosh there's a bug, eww dead fish, oh no sand in my food. Sigh.

Your son should read this article where a computer security expert talks about the vulnerability of macs. There have also been a couple viruses in the last few years that affected macs and apple never really came up with a fix for them...

I had a Dell for 3 years and it broke down completely because it had several viruses. It go to the point where it just wouldn't even start anymore. All this with anti virus protection that cost me about $200. 
My MacBook Pro is 5 years old and I've never had any problems with it. But I do have Avast Mac Security on it. It's free, so your son should check it out.
I do believe Macs can get viruses too but I don't think they're as prominent as in PCs. But that's just my opinion.
