I have heard and read that it took several months before the song was completed. Brian Wilson was always such a perfectionist that he piled work on top of more work before he was satisfied that the project was complete. What a great song. Perhaps the ultimate masterpiece song of the Rock & Roll era.
 
Really love the Beach Boys. As really Brian Wilson may have paid the price for it with his health. But at least, the Beach Boys would not be the legends that they are today.
