I hate it when I hear the quote "live life with no regrets".

Its not a hatred toward people saying it....its more anger at myself because for me to live without regrets is to live without conscience. I've done bad stuff...I can't forget...won't let myself forget or pretend it was meant to be yadda yadda...god might have power over everything , but we gotta own up to our mistakes without dressing them up as something better than they are.

I run into this sort of thing all the time. Hmm.. let me think of a few (listen to/follow your heart was nails on a chalkboard for me too, Grace!)

Mmm...be careful there. There is a Godly love we should have for ourselves, but I believe selfishness is the root of all evil. Most of us don't need ANY help at being selfish...

Some things are WORTH stopping. Do not continue in sin or bad decision because you 'want to finish what you started'. That's just a bad idea all around.

As Christians, we're supposed to die to ourselves, and be how Christ is and desires us to be... so all this, 'Be who you wanna be' or 'always be you first' or other such things... mm... no, that's not actually a good idea. We can be better than 'who we are' if we let God define us, instead of defining ourselves.

This one really annoys me. I know that Jesus cares about how we treat others, of course! We should treat them with love and care. But I really do believe that He wants us to learn His Word and perhaps memorize it too. The Word of God is our tool against the enemy in this world. Why not utilize it to the best of our abilities?
I think this quote is suggesting that we should just forget about the Bible altogether.

This might be off subject...but bear with me. So last week I was with my cousins and they were watching a show called "True Life" on MTV. The episode was about religion and how a gay guy really wanted to stop his homosexual lifestyle to please Jesus. He had just given his life to God. Anyways he was having a hard time with it and decided to visit a "different" church. In this church the Pastor told him that the Bible is the Word of God but that it's tainted and had a human fingerprint on it. So we shouldn't believe EVERYTHING in it!!!!

I was shocked and felt sick. I cannot believe any Pastor would say something like that! Of course he was just trying to get the guy to go to his church by accepting his homosexual lifestyle. At the end of the episode the young man goes back to his original church and decides to stop living a gay life, praise God for that! I hope and pray he can do it successfully.

Now, what I'm trying to say is that people may want God's love or be a Christian...but when you take the Bible away...is it still Christianity we're talking about? I know people nowadays need to treat others better, but a lot of Christians (myself included) need to read the Word more, too.

Morals and ethics change throughout time. Humans are not perfect and this is why we shouldn't rely on each other to set these standards. This is why we need the infallible Word of God.

I get what St. Francis is saying here. We should be a living example of Christ in our lives, so much so that people SEE a difference and are captivated by it. But...

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? Romans 10:14

At some point the gospel must be presented for people to believe.

I agree, Grace. I also think what Francis was getting at is similar to another quote:

"Sometimes, You are the only Bible someone will ever read."
We live in a world that's running from God, so while I fully agree and affirm where you are coming from, I also see where he is coming from. A few references:

"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." -John 13:35

"You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. - Isaiah 43:10

"In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16

We definitely need to use words (like you've pointed out Grace), but if words is all they are...it's pointless.

"14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." -James 2:14-17

I'm actually a pretty big fan of St. Francis. He lived in a time with lots of 'lip service' but not a lot of 'putting your money where your mouth is'. One of his other less famous quotes is:

"Words...Words! I'm tired of words! Show me!" He was saying that to his rich friend who said he supported him, and wished to be the kind of man he was. Later on, that friend actually came to live in the monastery and be a monk along side St. Francis, caring for the homeless, sick, and disadvantaged in that little community. They also rebuilt the walls and homes there.


So, we do need to preach the Word, certainly, but that's not enough.

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." -James 1:22

That's wrong anyway. God ain't in an arm wrestling match - real or figurative - with the devil. Anyone who has read Job knows that.

Repost if you want to promote the idea God and the devil are equally matched.
Ignore if you think it's just plain foolishness. :P

One I personally never understood is - "If you love someone, let them go. If they come back, they're yours. If they don't, they never were." I'm sorry, but that is so stupid lol. If you truly loved someone, why would you let them go? I don't get it. XD And they never were? If you have the ability to let them go, they obviously were at some point. :confused:

Just, FYI, there's no record of St. Francis ever saying that.

This is from the poem In Memoriam by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It's about the death of a FRIEND...not about romantic love at all. People have never read the poem or heard of Tennyson, but they'll say this phrase like it has to do with romance. Makes the English teacher (and lover of poetry) in me a little nutty.
 
I'm well aware of poetry, Tennyson included, but I've never read that one, actually... Perhaps I will sometime.

Have you read 'The Hound of Heaven' by Francis Thomson or 'Only one life, t'wil soon be past' by C.T. Studd?

Plastic for the Francis quote, you're right, but it fits with his theology. It's a summery statement attributed to him.

If you're and English teacher then I'm quite sure you're already a little nutty. Two out of three of my high school English teachers were a bit touched (maybe I should say eccentric) but it made their classes quite interesting.
 
Well, personally I HATE this little quote: "Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get." Seriously, has anyone out there ever though about how stupid that quote is...?

That cartoon is exactly like the people who line up around the corner to buy gas at the Costco here. They're sitting 20 minutes with their engines running just to save about 4 cents a gallon.
