I see a lot of memes, quotes and catchphrases on Facebook and other social media that just have me shaking my head. For instance... this one that someone I know posted today:

This is a terrible idea. (People I know who have followed their heart against all the warnings of their brain, their Bible, their friends and relatives, managed to ruin lives. Usually, their own.)

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jer 17:9)

Have you seen a popular quote lately that got it WRONG?

Popular quotes have gotten it wrong since the beginning of time. The only proof you need is how much they contradict each other. He who hesitates is lost vs look before you leap...

One of my personal pet peeve phrases is "YOLO!!!"

"You Only Live Once!!"

Now on the surface, this isn't a bad saying. And to be fair, it's even true!

But in our culture, there is always the implication of, "So Go Ahead!!! Make a Stupid, Reckless Decision Today!!" Whenever I hear "YOLO!" I always think of the Ashley Madison scandal (an infamous website where married people went to find supposedly anonymous affairs) because the site's catchphrase was, "Life's Too Short to Not Have an Affair."

*CRINGE!!!*

I have soooo many pet hates it would be impossible to
list them all but here are a couple:

Unless you are living on the edge you are taking up too much space.
It's blue sky thinking.
If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I hear all of these at work, people think they are clever but they are just
plain annoying and quite honestly, they make no sense at all.

Nicholas Sparks basically writes books for those that bought into the idea of the happily ever after romance from Disney...

My favorite misquote is the one by Lloyd Tennison (I think)..

Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

On the surface it makes perfect sense, but anyone who has lost a love knows that it can destroy a person's spirit and adversely affect their life. Someone who's never loved simply feels like they're missing out.

That can be taken more than one way. I'm reminded of an Arlo & Janis comic.

THEN: "Another piece of chicken?"
"Why not? You only live once you know."

NOW: "Another piece of chicken?"
"Better not. You only live once you know."

When you get older that phrase has a different meaning. You only live once, so don't ruin it with stupid decisions.

Not only that, but im fairly certain your heart is about dead center in your chest. Neither left or right...

Albeit the heart sits on the mid-line of the chest, the mid-line of the heart sits to the left of the chest mid-line so to a degree either statement is correct.
