Guys, would you date a woman who is older than you? By how much?

Girls, would you date a guy younger than you and by how much?

My mom and I were talking about this today and she said that she was happy with my dad being 11 years older than her. I like older guys too. Not a guy who could be my dad, but maybe a guy who is 10 or less years older than me would be nice. I don't know if I could go out with someone younger than me though. I feel like that would be uncomfortable because he's the leader of the household and I would be older? It just wouldn't make much sense hehe.

I mean sure if I fell in love with a guy 1-3 years younger than me then right on, but I would prefer not to. ;)

What are your thoughts?

I don't find the idea of dating a younger guy appealing, for several reasons.

I find younger guys or guys my own age to be the most appealing. I have hardly ever found men significantly older to be attractive. Which is sad because I keep getting hit on by men my dad's age...online luckily. I have dated a friend 8 years younger than me and one 7 years younger. The problem is more the gap in maturity level, but other than that I think it should be more about the individual and not his or her age (as long as that person is legal).

I tend to auto-behave and auto-treat younger dudes as my younger brothers, having one of my own. With that said, it would be awkward for me to be with someone younger (even by just a month).

Yes - and I did once. I like the maturity found more often in older women, though as I get older myself, it (the maturity) tends to level out. I have a preference on how much older, but nonetheless, I can't say I'd put a universal cap on it. The age gap in either direction is less important than the chemistry to me (not that I'm looking).

I grew up with older brothers, so there ya go. XD
My maturity level seems to be more on par with guys younger than me and I seem to have a lot more in common with them. Also, they make me feel younger...or older...depending on if I'm feeling emo that day. Older guys also tend to want to have kids right away and that scares me, since I'm not even remotely ready for that.

Also, to respond to the original poster's comments on older men being the leader of the household, that depends highly on the individual and his personality and not his age. An older man could be anything but a leader and a younger one could be a natural born leader...it's all in someone's head. Most women still continue to hold onto old-fashioned ideas of men needing to be older because that's what media shows us or what people think is attractive or the status quo. If it's not in the bible, it's in our heads. Period.

Yes, I feel the same way. Since my brother is three years younger than me I see everyone younger than I as a little brother. That's kinda funny. :p

I've only dated one girl older than me and it was by a year, so not much of a difference lol. I do prefer someone younger than I am, but I also have no aversion to someone older within reason. The last girl I dated was five years younger, which is probably the limit when it comes to age difference for me. And tbh, that would probably be a stretch if it were someone five years older. I like to keep it close :p, but everyone has their own preferences.

My brother's girlfriend called me a cougar for dating a 20 year old (I was 28 at the time). Btw, she's 10 years younger than my brother. Double standards much? ;)

Well, I don't think I could date a guy younger than I am, I too would much rather have a guy older, but definitely not my dad's age.

However, if God puts that special someone in your life, you can try fighting it because after all we are human. At the end of the day, age is just a number and God knows exactly who is meant for each and every one of us so it doesn't make much sense to fight it and just follow God's lead in your life and you could never go wrong

That's how I've always felt. I mean my dad and my stepmom are 4-5 years apart, he's the younger one, but at that point it doesn't really matter. Though my mom was 2-3 years older than my dad.

Like if I ever find a guy I'd prefer him to be older because of those reasons. Though if I found a guy 1-3 years younger then yeah I might go for it. I'd go older before I go younger, which is probably why I won't even date until I'm at least 20 because gasp if I ever dated someone more than 3 years older I'm pretty sure I'd get backlash from all sides. And considering I'm an adult now I would never ever date someone under 18.

Yup. I'm swearing off dating till I'm 20. Way easier to do that.

I have a sister-in-law who dated a 60 year old at age 38. That was weird to me. And I saw it was more a Father figure arrangement than anything else. But the bible doesn't really approach this in a black and white precept. We see Abraham was 10 years Sarah's senior in Gen 17:17. But beyond that the number game stops in consideration of right and wrong, in fact the right and wrong of it was never mentioned exactly..except by way of principle. We can assume Joseph was older than Mary, but there is no number given to solidify such a claim. There are so many things too in our society that cause the policy of this to be stretched from one culture of living to another. But practical conclusions can be made as well.

Age is an obvious issue past a certain age difference. The stages of life become so different it is hard to see why someone would do that. And then there is the concern for lust and money issues to off-set the correctness of such a union. But the important thing to consider in the marriage issues is much more the balance of Salvation, spiritual maturity, compatibility, etc..At 20 a 30 year old may seem to have a larger gap than say a 40 year old to a 50 year old too. But a 20 year old with a 50 year old raises red flags all over the place for me, but not biblically, simply practically. As long as biblical principles aren't violated.

The best answer I can give is the answer James 1:5 gives.....Pray about it! "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him {Or her}.

Honestly I wouldn't date someone younger. The men that usually flirt with me are older up to like dude could be my dad and I still think they are very immature. If God presented me with someone younger he would definitely have to be mature for his age. My problem with dating usually isn't with age , it's Height! When you're a woman and almost 6ft its hard finding someone tall enough you can still wear high heels and not dwarf him or cause small man syndrome.

I feel the same way about the height thing. I'm 5'10'' and I don't generally like it when a man is shorter than me. My younger bf was 6'2'' so I was excited about that. It seems short women are usually more attractive to really tall men for some reason.

I always wonder why! Sometimes I think men are intimidated by taller women. I hit the 5'10 mark too. Problem is when I want to wear cute shoes I ask my self, what pair do I want to wear? The " How tall are you?" or "Do you play Basketball?" or maybe the "Can you reach the back of the top shelf for me honey?" But I love shoes so I deal with it and I love helping the height challenged lol. My mom teases me all the time , shes like almost a 8 inches shorter and so is my dad.
